I've been in this sport for what I consider a fairly long time as an adult and I'm 45....I raced my first in 1994 at the Dallas Amateur Supercross(insert laughs now), and literally got my ass worked. But it was then that I fell in love with the sport in any way, shape, or form....I love it, I don't care what it is. I say all that to say this....I've had some serious injures to my back/spine....3 surgeries at my L5/S1 but there is hope guys even at a late age if you still love to ride but don't want to pop pain pills the rest of your life. As my last resort I went to the Back Institute in Plano Texas where Dr. Zigler replaced my God given disc with an artificial pro disc. Point to my story is that I have zero pain now and ride religiously, although not hucking the big gaps anymore!!! Ride boys, enjoy your life it's a beautiful day in Texas....."My favorite photo with my boy on the old KTM"

Nice post, good words and glad for your health success. I have broken t-4-6 and have continued to ride for the last 27 years since, no regrets. I really like the direction medicine has taken, giving us thrillseekers the ability to continue after major injuries.

Yeah it's really incredible, I've always been a die hard moto guy and criticized the piss out of my woods riding buddies but now they can't keep my butt out of the trails!!! I hope you stay healthy brother and keep it up....I've always wanted to come out your way and ride !!

I didn't realize they could replace discs. That's freaking great news. Spinal cord injuries are my biggest fear in riding.

They've been doing it for a while, my insurance didn't actually cover it but I qualified for a clinical study as a guinea pig I guess....here's a picture of the disc.

I have broken the same vertebra T4 - T6 , did you have surgery to repair yours? Mine went un-noticed from multiple ct-scans and healed broken. Basically my 250f cut out on the face of a big gapped double and I landed on my head which was forced through my sternum. The resulting force broke the inner (rounded) face of me T4, T5, and T6 leaving them in a somewhat wedge shape, my T5 is pretty much a complete wedge. Anyway, I ride and have zero pain but the way my back healed in a slouching kink.

The surgery from what I was told was incredibly gnarly and risky (life threatening) due to the T4-T6 being just behind the heart and they would've had to deflate a lung to get in there.....just wondering if you had any surgery on your injury.

Had the assclowns at Riverside County Medical actually CAUGHT the goddam injury when it had just happened like I asked them to keep looking for, I knew something was wrong due I was completely numb from my belly button down for about 10 minutes.. turns out the wreck caused an edema on my spinal cord which is was caused the loss of feeling.

This was 7 years ago and im getting along just fine but that little break is forever in the back of my mind especially when I am riding. Will still "send" just about anything on a track except for the 4th pinned stuff Im just a little more cautious before I launch it.

Thanks for posting this. I'm about to ride Sunday for the first time in over a year and a half after dealing with a bulging L4-L5 disc that ended up finally needing surgery. Had surgery July 2015 and I'm nervous as all hell to get back on the bike but also chomping at the bit to do so. I also had no idea they had artificial discs!

Cool story.

Fractured my T6-T8 and the funny thing is my back feels better when I'm riding. Needless to say I try to ride as much as I can.

Thanks for all the kind remarks I was really hesitant about writing it and talking about it...depending on the bad disc it does help to ride a little and keep your nerves working....one thing doc told me was to not let the grass grow under my feet....get your ass out and do something. I guess we always say to be careful lol....but be careful buddy and enjoy riding your dirt bike

I have a bulging L5 as well that is pressing on the Sciatic nerve and have been off work for several months . The specialist has now referred me for a spinal nerve block injection and I am hoping this will get me right enough to get back on my bike as soon as possible . I have been racing for 43 years and my back does feel it after a days racing and have broken T4 and T5 in one accident and T6 and T7 in another but that area doesn't give me any trouble now .

Been around a while also, have had some neck and back issues that I won't go into...they are almost identical to some above...but I will tell you that I work for a willed body program for a major medical university in Dallas. We provide much of the torsos that these surgeons use to practice and teach on. We work directly with the back and spine institutes here in the metroplex. Ive had the pleasure of meeting and working with some amazing people.

This just made my day....Woohoo

I too have multiple fractures from a bad run in with a pissed off tree on a beautiful single track in CO. Was off the bike for 12 years and got back on 8 years ago and can't get enough of it. I am a Design Engineer that contracted to a small company many years ago in Monument Colorado by the name of Synthes, now a division of Johnson and Johnson. I was part of a small skunk works team the worked on some very cool projects to include Pro-disc and mini cnc bone mills for vertebrae repair from cadaver hip bones. I often wondered how many riders out there are running the pro-disc modWink

BTW the surgery is no joke, they often choose to go in from the frontDizzy

Have the exact same thing, had 4 injections in my spine, physical therapy etc. can't sleep at night, pain in right leg etc. skip all that stuff and get surgery done as I had no results with stuff it's just a temp fix. I go in for surgery next week to get mine fixed, I've been out of work for 2 weeks now.
