Anyone with experience in both care to comment?

Tracks have dwindled away to next to nothing around here, yet I live next to the ocean. Hence the question.

Good question. I've always wondered the same.

I'm sure there will be some council bullshit law that you can't ride waves on them here.....??

Its my go to when it’s hot , good core workout when pushed hard. You’ll work muscles that Moto does

It’s the closest thing to motocross that isn’t motocross. Kinda changes your concept of turning and understanding what rear wheel steer means when you get back on the bike.

It’s awesome. I started on a superjet. I sucked at first. Debated whether or not to get an SXR. Stuck with the superjet. Now I can ride the shit out of it, I love it. I don’t really get into tricks. I just love riding fast in all conditions and sliding the tail from time to time.

If you’re going fast on choppy water, IMO it’s a lot more physically demanding than moto. Unbelievable but true. The only thing is, it can get repetitive after the novelty wears off. Especially if you have nobody to ride with.

We have an old Kawasaki SX 650 and 750. Awesome fun! A great work out and challenge to balance control. Highly recommend.

In my opinion the two are very different. It feels more like riding a razor scooter (body position) than a dirt bike. Also the steering is entirely different.

Stand up jet skis are fun, but not nearly as fun as moto imo

Stand ups are fun, and a good workout, but they get boring if you’re used to moto as other than small differences in waves the terrain never really changes. Two things that make it much better are a friend with one also, and bringing a few buoys tied to anchors do that you can set up a course and race.

They are both equally hard on your knees. I'll second what others have said that they can get boring if you don't have someone to ride with. Moto isn't like that. I'll add that a standup is 1000% more fun that a sit-down ski.

I bought a practically new 1993 kawi 750sx two years ago for dirt cheap. Cleaned it up, put bars on it, new turf etc. it’s the only stand up I’ve ridden and holy hell it was like rolling logs on ice. The forums were right, terrible Hull design. spent a entire summer riding it, got better on it but was over it.

I really wanna try I superjet, I’ve herd they are light years better handling.. but for now I’ll stick with my wave blaster. It’s very much like a dirt bike on the water. U can drag the bars cornering, really good on surf or wake jumps.

If you want a real challenge and an even tougher work out, get a Kawi 550... The OG ski. Love mine!

Zero experience on stand up jet skis here, but lots of activities can be enjoyable and beneficial for MX (like jetski, gokart, supermoto, climbing, yoga, bmx, dh, etc, heck, even soccer is beneficial as it is necessary to run around 10km in 90 minutes while doing lots of "fractionated" - sprint/rest)

It is similar to riding on a track that has been over watered.

A Blaster 1, Krash Reaper, or Richter MX1 are the closest thing you'll get to Moto on the water.

I ride a kawasaki x2 and lots of people around me here in Ohio have stand ups. We have day trips where we spend all afternoon on the lake, heck they will ride dirt bikes in the morning and then go straight to lake to ride jet skis. Its a awesome cross workout. Not too mention its less sweaty and doesnt hurt as bad if you launch yourself off of it.

Fun, great workout, good way to stay fit in the summer... not at all like MX.

Fixed-handlebar boats like the Wave Blaster or X2 are my favorite.

Have an SXR800 over here, for something that’s so different to mx it’s incredibly similar. I would always recommend a stand up over a sit down if you’re an mx’er but the Blaster 1 (has to be the 1) is great fun.
Set up a few markers and race around like a circuit, it’s a hardcore workout!

We'd ride our standups in the ocean, hit the surf in Camp Pendleton. Not so much for jumping, but to surf the waves like on a surfboard. Super fun. Ride at least in pairs, bring a tow rope, and WD40 just in case. Haha

There are a lot of MX guys here in Florida that crossed over to stand up skis, primarily the original Super Jet, back in the 90's. Stand up ski racing was incredible until around '96, when the Sea Couches started to take over.

There was a series here called the Busch World Cup that attracted every top caliber guy from around the country. Former pro MXer Eric Yarnell won the 93 (If I remember correctly) expert title. His cup is still in my MX workshop today. It holds up the wifi router! Some of my most fun racing days ever were during that era... plus, bikinis!

Now, "watercraft" racing involves a few hundred guys from Miami on sit down personal barges running buoy courses at 70mph +. Not really exciting, just my opinion.

Stand Ups on a lake can get boring, best to take them into the surf. I guess its lucky that 85% of Australia's population is based within 30 miles of the coast, so theres plenty of sick spots to take them. I had a 98 SXi Pro with Mod B Pipe, custom foot tray with foot holds etc, and a heap of other Jet Ski specific stuff. It was so fun.

And like everyone else says, its a huge workout. Learning to ride a stand-up is hard enough initially, but then taking it into the demanding surf, hitting waves and trying to link them together to make big doubles and rhythm sections through the inlets near islands, and the fact that you cant really stop riding a stand up or you'll sink (or have to float in the water next to it in shark filled waters) for a few hours is a really intense and non-stop workout. Loved it! Awesome with a group of mates who have them too, it becomes just like an MX track day. Lots of shit talking and pushing each other.

Sold mine a couple of years ago as I didn't have room to store it once I moved into the city... but will def grab another one when I move back out of here soon.

Nothing like your dirtbike in the back of the ute, swag on the roof, and stand up jetski on the trailer heading away for a weekend!

Stand up jet skis are a real fun alternative to a bike when it's in the high 90's out, they're just real fun overall, I had a couple old Super Jets and liked them, then got a nearly new Kawi 800 that was so much better for bouy course riding, I say that but just like with bikes, my son could still beat me on a Super Jet.

This seems like a rhetorical question. Water and dirt are basically the same thing, so... end of conversation.

Good info, the fears of it getting bored quick are still there. The sitdown 3 seater things get boring within 40 minutes.

We had one at old lake house and it was hard but once I got used to it it was a blast but I got bad arm pump just like a dirt bike and I was like man this would be great training. Yes they are very close. I didn’t like the thumb thing though but you can change that out.

I bang a couple laps in the end
Superjet Freeride

I love it, Have no one else that’s any good to ride motos with. Takes a lot of practice to rail corners on these things. Most people just fall over lol

I’ve chased and dude on a 260 hp seadoo before and that’s a crazy workout and challenge!
