Are older 2strokes bad?

2 strokes can for sure keep up with most 4 strokes on a local level, I just feel like they take a lot more mental and physical effort to ride. I got a 03 KX500 and a 14 300SX and while the 450s are definitely not pulling me out of corners or down straights, I find it more difficult to gauge jumps than on a 450. Always overshooting or undershooting until I get really used to the track.

I couldn't ride this bad boy to it's full potential in 2003 and still can't in 2018.

To be completely honest if this was my bike I would make sure my bearings/suspension is fresh. Set your sag (seek a competent tuner if you can't get the numbers, not sure how that PDS stuff works). Make sure the wheels turn true. Ride the wheels off it.

If you had money burning a hole in your pocket:

1) Wheel rebuild/cerokote hubs - $600
2) FMF Factory fatty/silencer - $350
3) Find someone to make a replica of those factory Red Bull KTM graphics from this era.
Thanks for the advice, I’m definitely gonna get my suspension set for my needs which is not really done yet. And it already has a fatty and shorty on it from when I bought it! I would definitely like to do some cosmetic things to it’s thats the plan.

Please tell me you'll be removing those hideous spoke skins and sandblasting that pipe?

the spoke skins are gone, this is an original picture. the pipe requires more work, won't be too long. I don't know a lot about this bike, any info/ appreciated. 2001 RM250

That is one badass bike! In 1995 I had a 1980 CR80 that was completely restored. I was embarrassed by it and longed for a newer bike, boy what I wouldn't give to have that old bike now. It was absolutely beautiful.

I feel like in the mx community these days everyone has the newest and best bike, making me feel like I myself need a newer bike. Realistically are older bikes (early 2000’s) specifically 2strokes bad compared to new bikes. I have a 04 KTM 125SX and I kinda feel like the odd one out at the mx track as my bike is older however I had a strict budget when buying so I could not get the best and the most fancy bike. Just wondering what everyone else thinks about this.
I would ride a 2000 CR250 right now. I loved that bike. A 2001 as well.

I don't know your bike. I can only compare my RMs to what I have rode and all of them are better than me so why spend the money? Mine are paid for and dialed in and you can't go buy a new one.

Being sore everywhere after a 10+ year layoff is completely normal. In fact you'll probably be sore for the next couple of days.

As for your daughter telling you that you're slow, well that could very well be lol. The important part is that you're back out there and having fun. Time to get your daughter a bike of her own if she doesn't already and start making memories as a family.

MX is the best sport out there.

Not for sale at any price. Sinisalo is the best fitting most comfortable gear made and you can't buy it in the US anymore or even have it shipped by them from Finland...already tried.
http://www.sinisalo.com/mxl-fashion/sinisalowww.nsf/pages/products-cate…

However If you know someone in Europe they can buy and ship it to you i just don't know anyone and don't plan on making the trip anytime soon.
