Applied triple clamp vs. RG3?

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 7:09pm
I haven't had a chance to test these out, but the RG3s are over $100 more. I've had a problem with the front end on my RMZ450 tweaking after crashes and hard hits. I want to be sure and eliminate that...

Who has tried these?

RG3 is by far the best clamp. Put them on my 05 rmz450 after the stock junk twisted and never had a problem since.

Ride Engineering stuff looks good. Thanks Daniel. I guess only RG3 are rubber-mounted? Quite a bit of extra $$ for rubber. Would be nice to arrange a shoot out.

I've run the Applied clamps on two of my Honda's and thought they were great. Both sets had rubber mounted bars and the quality was great. If I hadn't liked the first set so much I never would have gone and bought another set for my 05 when I bought that bike.

I've had Applied clamps in the past, they are top notch. You can get them in either solid or rubber mounted, with optional taller bar clamps. I really question anyone who says the rg3 ones are better quality, what's better quality about them? The RG3's just have a different bar clamp mounting system which IMHO isn't worth $100 more.

The RG3 clamps are awesome. By having 4 mounting posts, they can still run soft rubber in the mount, without it twisting badly in a crash. I had them on my 05 Honda and loved them. They also dampen more vibration and harshness out of the front end. I had them with Twinwalls and it still wasn't too stiff.

Whats better about rg3, is their 4 point rubber dampening system.

Im pretty sure all other rubber mounted triple clamps use a 2point system that twists your bars out of sync easier in a crash

Once you ride with the 4 post mounts on the RG3s you won't like anything else. Spend the extra $100.

I have had Ride, RG3, PC, Factory R&D. I liked the RG3's bar clamps best never tweaked, PC and Fact R&D next, their bar clamp system works very well also. Ride is fine, I don't care for the clamp system. I have friends with Applied and they like them also. To me it's all about the bar clamp system.

I've had Applied, Emig Racing and Pro Taper. If you're looking for bar clamp adjustability, you can't beat the Pro Taper Accutrax. They also have a very good rubber mounting system that will not get tweaked from crashing. They even give you 3 different rubber compounds to use.

pro Taper looks nice. I assume you can use with Renthal Twinwall bars, or should you run with Pro Taper bars?

The best way to avoid tweaking the front end on you bike is to stop crashing. Wink

Sounds like RG3 is where it's at.

Just a few notes regarding Applied clamps. They were the first manufacturer of after-market triple clamps. Their clamps carry a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser that includes crash damage for those of you that can't keep it upright. They offer clamps dating back to the early 90's for those of you that are too cheap to buy a new bike. The company physically tests several different offsets before they recommend anything. They are always the first ones out with new clamps. (How do you think the other manufacturers settle on offset? They wait for Applied). I'm not saying RG3 is bad, I'm just saying don't bash something you haven't tried. $100 goes a long way nowadays. $329.99 at BTO.com…

Actually, they're the only clamps made in the USA as far as I know. They were never made in China and never will be like Pro Taper and most other clamps.

Telling me to stop crashing is like telling the birds to stop flying!
At the Vegas Arenacross I over-jumped a double and completely faced the triple. When I got up the front end felt wobbly. Or was that my brain?

I've had both. Buy the RG3s -you won't be disappointed. The Applied are just a better looking stock clamp IMO, and don't offer much in the way of noticeable ride benefits.

Something to note of these aftermarket clamps, while they offer a sturdy perch, much of that is transferred to the rider. Sharp or square edges of the clamps means more deflection and less flex. A lot less then what you get from your stock clamps.

Pro Taper now offers a triple clamp that on paper joins the two.

Those rounded edges allow for flex

sans rounded edges.

Just something to think about. Little details that go a long way.

do these clamps bring the front-end closer and make the big turn better/sharper?

If you get the set that does that, yes. They come in different offesets. Turning sharper can also result in ass over handlebars...

He is correct! They are that much better than most other clamps on the market. If you are riding a late model RMZ than RG3 is the only way to go IMO.

Lots of good input here- it's crazy the little differences that make a big difference in handling. I am leaning toward RG3 .
