Anybody ever have one, or know much about them? I can get a barely-ridden 2003 CR250 for less than $2k and wondering if I should. It has RG-3 triple clamps, AGV levers, a Pro-Circuit pipe, Pro-Taper bars and he just replaced the original tires for some new Dunlops.

$1900.

Please advise.

Also, I'll be setting it up to race some off-road stuff...desert and trails.

You will love the handling for sure. The engine you might want to massage just because they are great when spinning hard but no so great off the bottom and midrange. Plenty of guys know exactly what to do to make these bikes rip. Plus you can't go wrong with Honda quality when it comes to endurance type races. If its in really good shape I would say 1800.00 cash should get it. Let's ride Steve !

good bike, i think in 04 is when they added the RC valve..... RC valve motor sucks, its ok...but you have to do alot to get it running real crisp.

02 and 03 had the updated chassis without the stupid RC valve......go for it

I had an 02. Handling was great but I wasn't too jazzed over the feel of an aluminum frame, super rigid it seemed. Engine almost felt electric. Pretty smooth power delivery, no big hit anywhere.

Nope, '02 is the first year of the RC valve. I had one and remember the it was ironic that RC was going to be riding one that year. I had 2 '01 models, and overall it was a better bike.

The electronic RC valve was added with the new frame and case reed engine in 2002. The '03 is a decent bike but a decade old now. The only real problem with it is the Mikuni carburator which sucks for nailing down the jetting. The chasis on that bike is great and it handles better than almost anything. I bought a used one in 2004, did about 50-60 races on it over the years and still own it and it runs fine. I've had a lot of unsolicited offers for it even though it's been thrashed.

get the mx bonz airboot kit and you're good to go

if you're froadin' it..you will need to spend $$ on motor work if you think its too meager.

good bike!!

Yea the carb was tough. Even with the JD jet kit it is better to buy a kiehin carb.

I have an '02. Not much different. Spent many years on new 4 strokes. Had to choose between settling for a cheap ride or none at all when the oldest kid started college. Bought this for $500 in pieces. Now everything is new and I have to say it's more fun than my previous bikes. I'm not a 2 stroke die hard. I looked for a good used 250f but there was nothing around that didn't need a fortune in repairs to get it race ready.

Once I got it set up for me I was amazed at how easy it is to hold a line or drop into a rut. The only issue I had was setting up the Mikuni carb. I finally put a Keihin from a 2000 CR250 and it's like efi compared to the stocker. First race is in 2 weeks so we'll see how it goes. Oh, I also put a 2010 front fender and Cycra stadium plate to update the look. Love it.

I loved my 03. Not much bottom end, but you could ride it almost like a 125 with killer top end. I struggled for a while on the jetting, but finally replaced the needle and it was good. Bike handled great.

Keihin AS carb from a 2000 CR250 or 00 or later YZ250 properly jetted, don't run the TPS, set head squish to .050, run race gas and you're good to go.

x2.
Mine has been bomb proof. Handles, turns, stops, and shifts like no other.
Move some of the mid/top down and your golden.
CamP drops knowledge on these bikes.

I've tried a ton of combos.
My favorite; stock pipe, 50t, shorty, and boyesen flange.

I just sold my CRF 450 cause I had ACL surgery and wont be able to ride until at least Sept. I have my mind set on getting a 02 up CR250 when I start back riding. I rode an 02 once and it vibrated really bad. Also, my oldest son had a 02 CR125, my youngest had an 04 CR125. Both were great bikes with the major difference being that the 04 had the electronic RC valve and I just felt the 02 was a better bike. To my knowledge the 04 was the only year the 125 got that electronic version but the 250 got it two years. Does anyone know for sure. Also is the 05-07 CR250's better than the 02-04. I have read that they were.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I figured someone might have a quick answer for me since we are on the subject.

Thanks

I bought one in 2006, it was a little on the rough side but just needed some TLC. Bought all new plastic and a PC pipe, Rad valve, chain and sprockets and rebuilt top end. Kept it for 2 summers and then sold it........

I wish I still had it.

Buy it and have fun!

I just bought one last weekend for $950, but it was pretty beat up. Make sure the chain hasn't worn through the slider and into the bearing housing on the bottom of the swing arm. That seems to actually be a common problem.

I have a 2003 Honda CR250 and the bike has been pretty good to me. I, honestly, haven't taken the best care of it: 1) I was a broke college student when I was riding all the time; 2) I haven't rode in 3 years. The bike hasn't been started but it always ran well and worked for me. I think it is a great bike, I just need to give it some TLC. I am in the process of buying a house, but next month I should be closing on it. So when I get into the house, that bike is getting some of that TLC to get it running and I can get riding again.

02 to 07 honda 2 strokes are great bikes. I have a built 03 CR125 and a CR500 motor in an 03 CR125 chassis. The 250 version is also a great ride that can be improved upon by making sure the powervalve cables are correctly adjusted and installing an airstriker carb. there are lots of threads about these simple mods on thumpertalk and ATM websites. these bikes are way underrated, they handle fantastic and the fit and finish is the best.

What kind of clamps did you have to switch to in order to run that fender/#plate?

I think it's a matter of drilling...

Had an 02, felt the forks was a bit harsh, and low on bottom rump. One also needs to tighten those wires going to the RC-valve at times because they get a bit loose with a delayed function as in even worse low end rump.

Chassis where nice for me, felt bullet proof as in quality, easy to work on. I get the feeling a slower (old guy) one can ride 200 hours on with only change a couple of pistons. Which means you could get many seasons without draining your wallet.

I would buy it.

Last time I remember hearing about you riding there was poison oak and search and rescue involved. Wink
