This past Saturday my 13 year old son had a bad crash. Went to a new track, after rolling the first lap in practice he started stepping it up every lap, by lap 6 he was pretty much matching the lap times of the regulars to that track, then on a rhythm section with 4 doubles, on the second double, he some how had some kind of kicker or something and just about flipped upside down ((back wheel was pointing to the sky) and landed head first into the face of the next jump.... going fast!!
I ran over to him to find that he was knocked out cold!! He was out for maybe 30-40 seconds and when he opened his eyes he had no idea where he was or even what his name was. kept asking me why he is on the ground. His helmet was broken, chest protector shouldner shattered like an egg shell. Took him to the hospital and and had him checked out.... he seems ok now, just sore everywhere.
He wants to race tonight..... the question is... should I let him?
This accident was only this past Saturday.

NO!!
NO!!
His brain is soft... it has a bruise
Hit in the same spot and there could be permanent damage or death
NO!!
I dunno... it seems pretty serious to me. Mind you, he seems ok now, and he got his memory back, and the only thing he doesnt remember is the actual crash....... has no idea.
There's plenty of time to ride/race in the future. Take care of him now.

Waste of money and resources
Dave's rule of concussions:
Stay off the bike for two weeks after you start to feel normal again. No vertigo, no wooziness, no "soft focus" in your eyes (everything doesn't look sharp visually).
Two weeks AFTER you feel 100%
The kid has a long life ahead, the time now is a blip on the radar, don't do permanent damage
Go see your family Doc and try to get a MRI.
I give him an A+ for effort though, kid is tough!!!
Brain injuries can be compounding. Keep the kid off the bike for a while, have the doc check him out thoroughly before he rides again!!!
I've had 4 or 5 concussions. The reason I cant remember the exact amount is because I've had 4 or 5 concussions. Once you get your first one, the others start to come a lot easier.

All the list of things to watch for that the ER gave you are the indications for getting a scan.
You're past that time period now.
To be real careful, you could follow up with a doctor trained in what to watch for in the post-concussive period. However there aren't many who know anything about it.
The University Hospital in Pennsylvania where Broc Hepler goes has most of the recent research on that, and has a real good assessment tool for deciding when to come back from a concussion.
The shoulder may be more injured than you think. That one may need some more attention. Just because the x-ray was negative doesn't mean it isn't damaged. There's a lot more to a shoulder than bones.
Do not let your kid ride.
I thought I read something somewhere where it stated take a month off for every minute knocked out.

Fox Chest protector

Alpinestars Tech 10's
And I want to call it quits on the 85 and make him race with the 144 now. I think the small bike is a problem for him... he has gone down a few times recently and thats not like him.... he is too big for this little bike.
SIS: young athletes who have received a concussion and are in the healing process must be very carefull to not receive another concussion during this time of healing. If the athlete receives another concussion during this healing process he or she may suffer severe brain damage or may be fatal.
A Functional MRI may be indicated. See a specialist in this area and make sure you have all of the information to make a valid safe decision.
This is your son, do whatever is needed and more.

asking us instead of a doctor is using your head...looks like you may have a few of these "knockouts" in your early youth too.
keep the kid off the scooter and go to a doctor.
or is this a baited joke post?
