This past Saturday my 13 year old son had a bad crash. Went to a new track, after rolling the first lap in practice he started stepping it up every lap, by lap 6 he was pretty much matching the lap times of the regulars to that track, then on a rhythm section with 4 doubles, on the second double, he some how had some kind of kicker or something and just about flipped upside down ((back wheel was pointing to the sky) and landed head first into the face of the next jump.... going fast!!
I ran over to him to find that he was knocked out cold!! He was out for maybe 30-40 seconds and when he opened his eyes he had no idea where he was or even what his name was. kept asking me why he is on the ground. His helmet was broken, chest protector shouldner shattered like an egg shell. Took him to the hospital and and had him checked out.... he seems ok now, just sore everywhere.

He wants to race tonight..... the question is... should I let him?
This accident was only this past Saturday.

They didnt scan his head.... I was surprised and really wanted that. They just checked his eyes, ears, felt some points on his head and neck and asked about 100 questions then sent us home. Said to just let him rest and if he had any bad headaches or dizziness to come back. And this happened twice... went to a walk in clinic close to the track first..... when I wasnt happy with this...went to the emergency at the hospital...same thingUnsure
I dunno... it seems pretty serious to me. Mind you, he seems ok now, and he got his memory back, and the only thing he doesnt remember is the actual crash....... has no idea.

x 20000000!

There's plenty of time to ride/race in the future. Take care of him now.

go get an MRI . Then find out whats allright and what is`nt. Might be nothing. Could have some bruising which really shows up when you exert yourself. like in loss of balance and fatigue. Which sucks if your racing

I'm not a doctor, but I have had MANY concussions, I don't think an MRI is necessary especially if the Dr's he's already seen didn't order an MRI
Waste of money and resources

Dave's rule of concussions:

Stay off the bike for two weeks after you start to feel normal again. No vertigo, no wooziness, no "soft focus" in your eyes (everything doesn't look sharp visually).
Two weeks AFTER you feel 100%

The kid has a long life ahead, the time now is a blip on the radar, don't do permanent damage

To answer your first question yes I have. To answer your second no he shouldn't. Concussions are taken very seriously and a good enough hit on the head to make one forget is serious enough.

Go see your family Doc and try to get a MRI.

Yea...what I figured.... told him no racing right now, besides the concussion, he can hardly lift his right hand over his head, his shoulder is in pain. He did have that Xrayed but doesnt show anything broken, so its just banged up.
I give him an A+ for effort though, kid is tough!!!

I'm with Dave on this one!!! When I was 13 I had a severe concussion from a crash. Had amnesia for a couple of weeks. There was a 3 month blank spot in my memory. Couldn't remember the last few weeks of school, going to summer camp. It eventually all came back except for parts of the day I actually crashed. I was kept off the bike for several months!

Brain injuries can be compounding. Keep the kid off the bike for a while, have the doc check him out thoroughly before he rides again!!!

I agree with flarider. It took me about six to eight weeks to get over mine. If you don't mind me asking, what brand of helmet was he wearing and where did it break. Sound like it did it's job just asking for future reference.

Definately keep him off the bike and get him a new helmet; it did its job and its done.

I've had 4 or 5 concussions. The reason I cant remember the exact amount is because I've had 4 or 5 concussions. Once you get your first one, the others start to come a lot easier.

I Had a very bad crash 8 years ago cross rutted and landed on my head multiple concussions and 2 contusions, basically my left side of my brain was F'up It took about the 3 or 4 days before my hand writing didn't look like that of a 5yr old. 6 weeks until I was allowed on a bike again. I had to due reaction test to see how long it took me to react to certain things, after a week after the accident i felt fine but I would fail test and I took them three times every two weeks, i was out for almost 2 minutes when I crashed, i would just tell your son to wait at least two weeks just because he feels fine doesn't mean he is, and by the sound of it he needs to let his shoulder heal.

The helmet is a BELL MC replica. Has some cracks on the top and on the right side jaw area. Viser is also done.

You don't need an MRI nor a CT scan for a concussion. It won't help on the decisions of what to do or when to resume collision sports. But you do need to stay away from exertion/physical activity/dangerous sports.

All the list of things to watch for that the ER gave you are the indications for getting a scan.

You're past that time period now.

To be real careful, you could follow up with a doctor trained in what to watch for in the post-concussive period. However there aren't many who know anything about it.

The University Hospital in Pennsylvania where Broc Hepler goes has most of the recent research on that, and has a real good assessment tool for deciding when to come back from a concussion.

The shoulder may be more injured than you think. That one may need some more attention. Just because the x-ray was negative doesn't mean it isn't damaged. There's a lot more to a shoulder than bones.

doesent sound like a serious concussion to me (not a doctor though) since he hasnt had issues after as i understand. cracked a few helmets myself and my experience is that you are not fit to even think about racing a week after if its really serious. would let him wait a while until next race though. I also don`t recommend taking medical advise from internet dudes like myself!

Yep, I wadded it at my track once and was out for 12 minutes.

Do not let your kid ride.

I thought I read something somewhere where it stated take a month off for every minute knocked out.

Absolutely.... looking at a new package for him

Fox carbon fiber helmet
Fox Chest protector
Leatt
Alpinestars Tech 10's

And I want to call it quits on the 85 and make him race with the 144 now. I think the small bike is a problem for him... he has gone down a few times recently and thats not like him.... he is too big for this little bike.

He should move up to a bigger bike, no doubt. Dont forget the leatte brace also.

DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER LETTING HIM RACE! Head injuries need time to heal just like any other injury. Last August I got a very bad concussion and was out for 5 minutes from what I am told. I had balance issues for several months and it was several weeks before I could think straight. I still do not have my normal short term memory back. A child that age may not realize they are having issues with those things and it is not worth him getting hurt when he has many years ahead of him to ride. Concussions are very serious injuries and should be treated as such. I can't believe they didn't do a scan on his head at the hospital, when there is any loss of consciousness it should be done.

With young athletes (usually under 21) you can run the risk of SIS (Second Impact Syndrome) if he were to receive another impact to the head.
SIS: young athletes who have received a concussion and are in the healing process must be very carefull to not receive another concussion during this time of healing. If the athlete receives another concussion during this healing process he or she may suffer severe brain damage or may be fatal.
A Functional MRI may be indicated. See a specialist in this area and make sure you have all of the information to make a valid safe decision.
This is your son, do whatever is needed and more.

You'd be better off with a Shoei or Arai. Chinese helmets like the Fox are scary. Those people can't even build safe school buildings for their own children. Trusting them to properly make the single most important piece of safety equipment doesn't seem like a great idea.

nope.

asking us instead of a doctor is using your head...looks like you may have a few of these "knockouts" in your early youth too.

keep the kid off the scooter and go to a doctor.

or is this a baited joke post?
