I'm doing a resto on an 87 cr500. Everything is taken apart. I'm almost finished with the purchasing of parts. I'm going over every nut and bolt. Everything is to be inspected and replaced if needed.

The unit I bought was supposed to be refurbished. A lie. I think guy found it in a ditch. His incompetent mechanic pieced it back together but it didn't run. When you have no fuel (leaking petcock, pieces missing in carb), intermittent spark and 80 compression you have a disaster. I could go on.

I'm wondering what type/color rear sprocket was in use. I assume Sunstar but gold or silver?

Curious about decals. What company did the racing numbers?

I don't want a gold chain as that wasn't in play back then. I'm looking at a DID natural. I don't want black but don't want shiny silver either.

It's coming together . Engine is with my buddy, frame PC. Dubya redid the wheels . I went with factory gold finish, not bright gold. I'll post some pics later in different forum.

Thanks in advance. I'm sure I will have more questions.

It looks like sprocket color may be natural may be gold (ish) color I saw on johnsons 87 Cr250.

I cannot find these style of #s. Any help?

That style was all we could buy in the 80s. And they came separate from the #plate background which we often had to cut to fit from a square piece of laminate.

Go with Throttle Jockey for the decals and numbers, they can die cut them to replicate like they were in '87. Front plate looks like a Dirt Digits and the side plate looks like the euro style that n-style did. But again, they can match whatever look youre going for.

The sprocket would be HRC gold color, but the sunstar is a close match. I did a lot of this replica research for my 87 dymond 125 replica build.

I know it’s his 250, not the 500, but team would have run the same on both bikes you would think?

Throttle Jockey can make numbers in the old 100% duranumber font. That’s what most the teams used back in the later 80s. Honda also used a lot of Italian Tecnosel seats and stickers in the 80s. In this RJ pic it looks to me like he has a Tecnosel number on his side panel and something different (like a dirt digit) on the front.

I agree. I think sunstar calls that "Natural", not gold. Not sure though.

I looked around but could never find that style of number. I'll get them to do it. I've got a 77 cr125 going also.

Came across this photo. This is what I'm looking for re numbers. It looks like the 100% offered by Throttle Jockey. I'll check in with them. My bike aspires to be like this one.

Have a plating company remove the nickel plating coating on the platinum pipe, polish the steel, heat the welds and you have yourself a works pipe.

Have you had one done or seen one firsthand? Were you pleased with results? What was approximate cost on that? Questions questions. Thank you for your help.

I got the plating off with glass beads in my blaster cabinet myself with great end results.

Then you polished it? With...? Then heated the welds , with a torch? I'm digging the plan.

What I do is after the blast, I scrub with red scotch brite pads and wd-40, then depending on the look youre going for, you can keep going to whatever shine you like. There are several ways to do the seams depending on what you have, but Mapp gas in a handheld torch works well.
