Never really considered a ktm before as they've always seemed insanely small, but someone was cool enough to let me spin a few laps on their 2017 at Pala and for me being 6'6" and the bike only having tall bars, I felt pretty comfortable on it so I'm thinking of making a switch if I can get a decent price for my Yamaha.

I'm seeing some great deals on 2016-2018 models, some FE, some standard. All under 100 hours.

ANYTHING I should know about these before I snag one? And I mean in terms of owning a ktm, not buying used.

I'm on my first KTM that I have 22.8 hours on so far. I LOVE this bike. I came off an 09 KX450 and to me this KTM handles like a dream, power is great and the hydraulic clutch & electric start are just icing on the cake. I also really like how simple it is to swap out the air filter - no tools required and can be done very quickly. So far quality seems good, and it's held up well to the crash testing I've done. Parts seem a little more expensive (haven't bought any yet but have looked into a few things out of curiosity). I've seen some comments regarding frame breakage - thankfully I have no first hand experience with this so I can't say what that is all about. Overall I can't really say anything bad about this bike or KTM - they seem to have their shit together. Maybe I should work for them! lol

Get a ‘17 or ‘18 if you could. The 16’s has the shorty 4CS fork. Other than that they are great.

They are bullet proof in terms of engine I would say, so far have not heard one issue with sxf 450 from 2016-2019 that could be considered epidemic failures. Check the head tube/frame for cracks in paint is the only thing I can think of.

Not sure if I am crazy or not but I felt like the KTM felt a lot more cramped than the Husky. I am 6'4". They could very well be the exact same size for all I know. I have seen a couple really good deals on FC 450's lately to.

That was my initial thought when I sat on it but with the RC high bars it actually felt quite great.

I can't imagine the Huskys being different than a ktm.

If it's a 16 make sure it's a Factory Editon because that's when they made huge changes and got rid of 4CS.
I had a 16 FE and had zero problems. I did a top end at 80hrs and the piston and cylinder looked great, and the valves were still in spec. Traded it in with 85 hours.

Does anyone offer lowered footpegs for them besides pro taper?

A one piece unit like the raptors?

I have the '18 450. Great bike. So far I've done a few small mods:

1 extra tooth on the rear so I could use 3rd in corners more
2 stroke filter cage with flame resistant twin air filters
shorter pull throttle cam
way less air pressure in the fork
like the filter, clutch, front brake, motor, look/feel, pretty much everything

Could be a bit narrower at the shrouds to make it easier to get forward in corners but that's about my only complaint. Probably not an issue when you're 8 feet tall.

That's about it.

Get a 17 or newer. Unless the 16 has an aftermarket fork since the stock 16 fork is bad.

I have had a 16 Factory Edition and a 17. They are bulletproof, great bikes!

Agree with 16.5 & newer due to the newer forks, stay away from 4cs forks. I have 100 hrs on my 16.5 FE & it has been a great bike. Keep eye on spokes, subframe & muffler bolts. The chain adjusting blocks need a rethink.

Can’t go wrong with them, they’re great bikes! The 2016’s had a recall on the spokes, and I can vouch that you should heed that warning. I had them torqued properly. This pic was taken about 30 minutes after exploding the front wheel (to be fair, I slammed into the face of a jump..). Broken collar bone, ribs and concussion.

Sandman, I think Ride Engineering has kit for the adjuster blocks and axel. Heard something about it on the pulpmx show.

Jesus Christ, hope you're healing up ok.

I heard rumors that it wasn't the spokes but the rims that are causing this issue. Confirm?

Either way, as long as the stock hubs are strong I have no issue lacing up some fresh hoops and beefier spokes.

My primary concern is longevity of the engine's bottom end, frame strength and forks.

So basically, if I get a '16 FE or newer it sounds like these things will last forever with proper maintenance.

Mind you, I'm anal about upkeep on bikes. I'm that guy that every 10hr oil change I check valve clearance, every 20-30hrs I'm replacing bushings/seals/fluid on the suspension, every 50-60hrs I tear down to the frame.

It's excessive, but I've NEVER had a failure of any kind since being on four strokes and I'd like to keep that streak going.

Markee, you are correct, uses the Honda axle assy. I have been meaning to get this setup. It is a pain to get the proper alignment when the rt side axle block moves around in the swingarm while tourqing the axle nut, I have resorted to putting a small socket in between the axle block & swingarm to keep the alignment marks even with the left side. Not a big deal but should be on KTM"s short list for improvements.

Any of the 2016+ are great. 17 and 18 have AER forks that I think are better then 4cs.

Be aware of the spokes, I think some 2016 had fuel pump issue where they hose would kink, but that was hard to diagnose without it having a fuel problem.

Upgrade to the WPS Featherlight battery for easier starting and more reliability.

Keep the inline fuel filter clean.

There’s great deals out there, good luck!

With a Honda axle, doesn't Yoshimura makes blocks as well for KTMs?

I had a set of 4cs forks on a 2015 xc300 do this....Factory connection had revalved them already, I sent them back to FC, they were able to get KTM to warranty the parts & some labor....

I’m all good now, thanks. It’s the spokes that we’re the issue, not the wheel itself. I believe they were too thin or something.

The motors on these bikes are rock solid. The 4cs forks aren’t the best, but I wouldn’t let that sway you away from getting a 2016 if you find a good deal. Of course you can always slap on cone valves and be done with it. That’s what I did.

Keep a sharp eye on your top and bottom shock bolts. Loc tite them! I've had a 12, 15, 17 and now a 19. Love them, I'm 6"3 I put bar risers on and that was the best mod for getting room under the bars. Your friends will start getting mad when you keep yanking them on the STARTS.

How do I know if i have the updated wheels? I am finishing a 16 125SX I bought a while ago and don't want to put all my time and money into something that might explode like that anytime soon.

They didn’t grease things up too good from factory so it’s always worth going over linkages etc!

My 450sxf have been perfect, come over from a crf it’s night and day difference. The built quality is so much better on the ktm. It’s built to last not like cheap Honda stuff. Plus you get hydraulic clutch, and all the mapping options traction control and launch control.

Call your KTM dealer and they can run the VIN to determine if there are any recalls that have not been performed. It was an official recall for 2016 models. I’m not sure of any other year. But like the pic shows, I can personally vouch that you should have the recall taken care of. It’s a recall for a reason. Lol

Here’s how I ensured (as much as possible) that it won’t happen again. My motto: never replace, always upgrade! Laughing

Im 6'5" and have a sxf 450 2017 with 58 hours on it.
Best bike I've ever owned. Raised the bar a bit and use a tall seat.
I change the oil every 3 hours and had the piston changed at 48 hours just to be sure, so far the bike has never let me down.

I was a Honda guy for a long time....Usually can't go wrong with Honda quality, but I tell my friends the KTM is the bike Honda would have built if they cared about being the best....
