Im 290lbs and have been wanting to buy another bike. Ive been injured from a bad car accident for years but am doing better so thought about getting me a 125 smoker just for fun again. I have never gone this long without riding since I was 6, I miss the hell out of it. Honestly my 15' YZ250 was a bit much for the type of riding I like so im probably gonna get the ol 125. I havent ridden a 125 since 2000.
Here in the south, it's not uncommon to see 250+ riding 125's. With your injury you can still have the size bike and safety of the small engine as well. To at least mess around on. Let hit rip man.
I'm 185 and there's no better feeling than running the dog snot out of a 125. maybe I'm the only on that feels that way but I can run/ride it harder because of my weight holding it back.
i can rip one still. landings are brutal. i'm well over 200# nowadays. just ride it....way less chance of impacting ground at high speed than with a 250 2t or 450. we don't impact well.
If you're a big guy it makes the 125 that much more fun, and challenging.
I'm 210 right now, been 230, still ride 125's. Looking at picking one up as a project right now since I'm laid up with a broken ankle.
Good friend of mine is 260lbs and on his yz125 he's really hard to pass even when I'm on my yz250.. It's all about momentum and exit speed. Sometimes I'm faster on the 125 just because I can get on the gas so much earlier than with a pipey 250..
I was 200 pounds riding my girlfriends 05' CR125R a few years ago, and really didn't go that much slower than on my 450's and 250's. You've gotta get a little creative on line choice, and really stretch some things out, but it's a great time!
A strong 144 like a KTM or Yamaha is an absolute blast, as well!

I'm 220 and my favorite bikes have been 125s. All of my vintage bikes are also 125s and the best part about them is the weight and lack of arm pump. Could ride forever without pumping up! Of course I'm hard on the vintage motors, but they're so easy to rebuild too.
I usually range between 185-200 and love ripping it up on my wife's 125. I dont ride it often but when I do I have a blast. I really want to compare lap times between the 125 and 250. The 125 doesn't feel much slower in terms of lap times but maybe thats just because i'm ringing its neck.
As far as the bikes holding up, all the hard parts are the same as the 250's, just might have to do top ends a bit more often
I like this thread and these responses! This harkens back to why you started riding in the first place, because it is fun! I'm probably 215 these days and reading this stuff makes me want a 125 just to go out and thrash
I weigh about 250-260 and have a 15 Yz125. We have a series here in Ohio that's runs a 125 class. The last race I was in on it there were 18 guys on the gate and I came out of the first turn in 3rd. I ended up hurting my ankle that moto but don't let people tell you you can't ride a 125 because you're heavy. They will pull you around and you'll have a blast riding it.
6'3" 225 here on the slowest 125 ever made.. Lol. My 02 cr125. If your riding moto stiffer springs are a must to get it to handle properly. I'm roughly 2-3 sec slower per lap on it vs my 450.
I'm 205 and love ripping my 125 , it's my 2nd bike . It's great fkr training and keeping corner speed up for when you ride the big bikes . Actually picking up a 17 350 today. Always been on 450s so I hope I like it .
I'm 200 in gear and ride a 150sx. I was on a 450 from '09-'14. Got the 150 for a second bike and ended up selling the 450. I'm slow and clumsy but its not because the bike is too slow. Fun factor went through the roof as well.
I just had one a year or two ago. Actually it was a 150. At 6'3" and 210 I'm probably not ideal for a tiddler. But nothing is as much fun, and nothing sharpens your skill set like spending time on one.
If you are jumping get some suspension work done, your wrists, knees and ankles will thank you. If the bike is lugging bad out of the corners adjust the gearing a bit.
It'll be fun no matter what, just little things will make it less painful and more fun.
With gear on I'm well over 200lbs. As far as racing a 125 goes...well, good luck (although I'm planning to do just that at Englishtown next weekend!), but the fun factor is through the roof. I actually find it easier to ride smaller bikes as a taller/bigger rider as well. Rather than always trying to fight the pull of a 450, I try to take advantage of the leverage that my body has, constantly moving back and forth on the bike to keep momentum up.
I'm about 245 in street clothes and have an 04 rm 144. I love riding it, the extra torque from the big bore helps a lot. Its worth having the suspension set up for your weight also.
I am 230 and have a yz450 but a friend of mine let me ride a new yz250f and that is the funnest bike I have ever ridden. I loved it so much I ordered a 17 yz250f for myself, I know I'm to big for it but I don't care! Haha

I think he was 2nd or 3rd those years on the factory Yamaha.

here another one!
sure, when i was riding more frequently i loved a Honda 250 2t but now i ride not quite often and i'm love with a yz 125!
