Not me personally but have seen it happen. My buddy is an ortho rep for implants and hardware. He shows me some cool stuff from time to time.

I have a talar navicular fusion and one of the screws is broken. I can't find the exrays right now. I had no idea. I probably should have had it out after a year.

mine is very similar, 8 screws and a plate. Broken tib and shattered ankle in 2003 at Perris Raceway. It's all still in, doesn't really bother me. The metal detectors do pick it up usually..
edit: my bad, didn't see the broken screw part. How did you know it was broken? could you feel it move??

Well, I sprained my ankle super bad two weeks ago. Right at the start of quarantine. I didn’t want to go to the hospital or Dr.s because of the sickness going around. I waited, but finally went. They didn’t find any breaks but the screw is broken 😣😫

I broke this ankle (tib/fib) originally at my last SX race in 2001. Salt Lake.

So, I don’t know if I broke the screw two weeks ago, or if it something that just wore out and got weak over time.

That’s some swelling right there. Have you soaked it in epsom salt and hat water. Broke mine 3 times between both legs and have had similar hardware. After surgery to relieve swelling I would soak it. Crazy how you could feel the swelling leave. I removed the plates but now have plates in my metatarsals.

It’s barely noticeable 😬.
Kidding aside, definitely looks like it would have broken from the last wad. The plates and screws are very tough from what my doc said. He also warned that my ankle could get stuck on a weird angle if I crashed and bent the plate.
I’m sure you know the soaking routine, not much else to do until you get in to see the doc.
Hope you heal up sooner than later Regis 👍

Similar, I had a spiral fracture tib fib, with the rod and screws, after 8 weeks was given the all clear to walk, the next day it was fucked, sheared the screws and my leg collapsed 1/2".
I had to wait another 7 weeks to walk again.
A year later they removed the head off 2 screws that had backed out and were rubbing on my riding boots.
The rod and broken screws are still in there 15 years later.

I broke my fib skateboarding also back at Thanksgiving by rolling it really badly (stepped off board at the top of a bowl, then stepped back on it accidentally while running down). I felt a small pop then had a little bit of shock (felt sick to my stomach, needed to sit down before I limped out). I've sprained my ankles a lot but never felt like that before.

I let it go for a week thinking it was just sprained. But the sharp pain just above my ankle bone led me to believe it was something else - turned out to be broken. It took another 6 weeks in a boot before I could walk without that sharp pain, and 9 weeks before I could start to run without significant pain.

Now 4 months later you would never know it was broken except for the deformation I can feel in the bone compared to the other side.

Yup. Been there, done that! I can’t tell if that’s a syndesmotic screw....That is one connecting the fibula to the tibia. It leaves less motion and can lead to other problems down the line. I can relate...ouch! Try doing that to the same leg that you’ve already done a tibial plateau on....got screws?
Edit... Holy shit now I see the syndesmotic screw broke! Humm... If it doesn’t hurt, it might be a good thing that broke.

Hopefully nothing is broken, but I have similar hardware still in my ankle.

I’m an X-ray tech at a trauma center and I’ve seen plenty of broken hardware. It happens. Luckily it’s not too common, but it happens.

Broke my ankle 2 years ago in a local race.

Broke the lower part inner part of my tibia and had a small chip in the back from the impact.
My fibula had a vertical and horizontal fracture. After 8 screws and a plate it was all fixed.

Last year skiing a was in a lot off pain in my new boots from an screw that was sticking out.

I have been considering getting them removed but i cant do it now because of the corona virus. And I dont want to do it during my 20 weeks of internship. My internship is at the same company i had a 10 week internship when I broke my ankle. Wink
