So I over jumped a jump and ended up breaking my talus, calcaneus(heal bone), and the bottom of my fib. This was early march 2016, doctor did no surgery on it. I've done everything that I can think of to get it back to normal from walking to cycling and have 90% range of motion back. The bad is that i have a limp now and when i first get out of bed it is in pretty good pain then when i get to moving my limp slowly gets a little better.
So my questions are can you still ride mountain bikes with ankle fusion does the jarring hurt it?
Do you still limp with a ankle fusion?
Is motocross to big of a risk with a ankle fusion of reinjuring it as far as coming up a little short or oj something?
If you do hurt it can they fix it again or is there something else they can do?
If you have had one would you do it over again?
Thanks for any answers

Sorry to hear that you need a fusion, never an easy choice to make.
First off, depending on your insurance, I'm begging ya to call Dr. Volkmann at the Foot and Ankle institute (located in Valencia, CA). By far the best surgeon I have ever worked with...legitimately cares
about his patients. Had my left ankle fused a few months back, and he has called or texted me at least once a week since just to see how I'm doing...you don't find that very often in a surgeon.
Second, be ready for a long recovery. Remember you are essentially putting two parts of your body together as one, and your body has to adapt to it. Expect 3 months in a cast/walking boot at a minimum. I had my surgery Oct. 2nd, and am in a walking boot one hour a day, and on crutches the rest of the time. Still have 4-6 weeks before the bone graph fully closes on my heel.
I can't speak too much to riding/jumping as I am still trying to heal, but I can speak to the fact you are going to walk with a limp, I would almost bet anything on it...you are eliminating the mobility of a joint, and are going to have to compensate somehow...usually that is with a limp.
Lastly, if I had to do it over again, I will say I wouldn't have waited as long as I did. Granted the healing process has been tough, my leg is now straight with my foot for the first time in 8 years, and that alone has been worth it.
If you're to the point you need a fusion, then your ankle is already garbage. Don't put it off. Just get it done by the best doctor you can see, heal up, and get back to a normal life.
If you wanna talk more in detail, let me know. Would be happy to talk with you over the phone...I offer that because I wish I had someone to really explain everything me and my family can expect after coming home from yh hospital. That's where it gets tough.
Talk soon man.
I have a slight limp without shoes , but with shoes on. It's hardly noticeable.
My only choice at the time was either amputate or fusion. This was 17 years ago. Medical practices have come a long way .
The pain doesn't bother me that I have / aching almost non stop but sometime I wonder if it actually is affecting me.
Only option is fusion I went to chiropractor to see if he could loosen it up and he actually did help it some but the pain and aching didn't change.
Let me know and I'll send you my personal email
I've said it once I'll say it again. By far the best practice I have ever visited, and wouldn't change my choice for the world.
Alexander has a great rep in the moto community, but I advise you to give these guys a look. Best decision I ever made..::you atleast owe it to yourself to set up a consultation with Dr. Volkmann, you won't be disappointed
When y'all are talking about a long recovery how long do u mean til it's good to go?
One hour a day in a boot without crutches, then crutches for the rest of the day....will be like that for another 6 weeks until my bone graph compleltey heals. I am also in physical therapy twice a week where I walk small distances without the boot. Hurts like a bitch, but that's part of it.
Depending on what kind of work you do, expect to use all of your sick/vacation time.....if your a desk jockey you are going to need a month or so at home to get over the big pain, after that it should be manageable.
If you are in a manaual labor trade, 4-6 months. You can't risk damaging it after the surgery is complete. There is so much trauma to the joint there are a lot of things that can go sideways.....this is the first time I have followed my doctors orders explicitly. I'd rather be safe than sorry
Pit Row
I think being able to move it and get the blood moving helped tremendously with recovery. It still hurts pretty good and it's defiantly a long recovery but I feel getting in early and having an active recovery instead of it being strapped in a cast really helped prevent a fusion for me. At least for the time being.
I got pretty much the same deal as the op except displaced talus neck recently. It doesn't look very displaced but theyre talking hardware, all I really want to know is how long it took guys to be back on a bike?
Wearing suck ass Sidi crossfire 3 with 3 rides on them fwiw. The boot folded around the hinge system no problem.
I honestly think it could have been prevented if I were wearing my previous instincts but who knows. That and kept my machine beneath me of course.. I never had protection problems with my instincts but they come apart quickly.
Tech 10s offer the best support/hyperextension prevention? Figured I'd ask this time. Not wearing Sidi ever again...
Didn't josh grant smash both his talus? I'm lucky I only have to deal with one.
Is plural talus "tali"?
He was on the podium today. The previous "tali" injuries don't seem to slow him down much.
Question for the guys with the Talus problems though, did you lose all your motion or something? And what is the realistic heal time? I was expecting to be back on my feet sooner than this.
