So I over jumped a jump and ended up breaking my talus, calcaneus(heal bone), and the bottom of my fib. This was early march 2016, doctor did no surgery on it. I've done everything that I can think of to get it back to normal from walking to cycling and have 90% range of motion back. The bad is that i have a limp now and when i first get out of bed it is in pretty good pain then when i get to moving my limp slowly gets a little better.

So my questions are can you still ride mountain bikes with ankle fusion does the jarring hurt it?
Do you still limp with a ankle fusion?
Is motocross to big of a risk with a ankle fusion of reinjuring it as far as coming up a little short or oj something?
If you do hurt it can they fix it again or is there something else they can do?
If you have had one would you do it over again?

Thanks for any answers

Go see Alexander, he fused mine n I can run now and do every thing I couldn't before. I know the feeling of waking up with a foot that doesn't work, you gotta get it fused. My sub-tailer joint collapsed because i waited so long, and caused the worst issues from my feet injuries. All this blah blah bs doctors do to try n save your horizontal movement is to keep you paying money to see them when crap don't work, when a fusion is the fastest way to get a person on with there life. It's a longer recovery but it's worth it. Go see Alexander, I saw him once and he said i need it fused! I said no way i wanna save the joint n he said it's not better and told me a list of riders that it saved. I was game at that point.

You know me all too well haha.

Sorry to hear that you need a fusion, never an easy choice to make.

First off, depending on your insurance, I'm begging ya to call Dr. Volkmann at the Foot and Ankle institute (located in Valencia, CA). By far the best surgeon I have ever worked with...legitimately cares
about his patients. Had my left ankle fused a few months back, and he has called or texted me at least once a week since just to see how I'm doing...you don't find that very often in a surgeon.

Second, be ready for a long recovery. Remember you are essentially putting two parts of your body together as one, and your body has to adapt to it. Expect 3 months in a cast/walking boot at a minimum. I had my surgery Oct. 2nd, and am in a walking boot one hour a day, and on crutches the rest of the time. Still have 4-6 weeks before the bone graph fully closes on my heel.

I can't speak too much to riding/jumping as I am still trying to heal, but I can speak to the fact you are going to walk with a limp, I would almost bet anything on it...you are eliminating the mobility of a joint, and are going to have to compensate somehow...usually that is with a limp.

Lastly, if I had to do it over again, I will say I wouldn't have waited as long as I did. Granted the healing process has been tough, my leg is now straight with my foot for the first time in 8 years, and that alone has been worth it.
If you're to the point you need a fusion, then your ankle is already garbage. Don't put it off. Just get it done by the best doctor you can see, heal up, and get back to a normal life.

If you wanna talk more in detail, let me know. Would be happy to talk with you over the phone...I offer that because I wish I had someone to really explain everything me and my family can expect after coming home from yh hospital. That's where it gets tough.

Talk soon man.

My ankle is completely fused. I can't run , but have no problem on a bicycle or Moto with jumping etc. luckily it's my right ankle, can't imagine it would be easy to change gears with a left ankle fusion.
I have a slight limp without shoes , but with shoes on. It's hardly noticeable.
My only choice at the time was either amputate or fusion. This was 17 years ago. Medical practices have come a long way .

I had mine fused 16 years ago. The dr that did the second surgery threw some bone away and half assed it. Walked on it for a bit and the whole ankle collapsed. No choice but to fuse it. I'm 47 years old and am in pain everyday. Ankle feels fine but all other joints around it hurt. I haven't rode a bike since I had the crash that did it. Have a family and kids to take care of. Good luck with it and always get a second opinion.

I'd like to hear from some people that have had there foot fused I dislocated my foot in half and shattered my navicular bone and other parts of my foot into million pieces 15 years ago and have pretty bad arthritis in it sometimes limp and if I stand a lot the next day I can't even walk when I wake up.

The pain doesn't bother me that I have / aching almost non stop but sometime I wonder if it actually is affecting me.

Only option is fusion I went to chiropractor to see if he could loosen it up and he actually did help it some but the pain and aching didn't change.

Look into Ankle replacements. Have a friend that had one replace from Dr Franson at University foot and ankle institute Valencia ca. He swears by it Best thing he ever did.

Dr Franson is the head of that practice and he personally oversaw my surgery with Dr Volkmann.

I've said it once I'll say it again. By far the best practice I have ever visited, and wouldn't change my choice for the world.

Alexander has a great rep in the moto community, but I advise you to give these guys a look. Best decision I ever made..::you atleast owe it to yourself to set up a consultation with Dr. Volkmann, you won't be disappointed

I was 3 months non weight bearing. Your calf muscle will basically disappear over time. Make sure you get a second opinion. I have pain everyday and don't want anyone to go thru this if they don't have too. Good luck

I'm 3 months tomorrow.

One hour a day in a boot without crutches, then crutches for the rest of the day....will be like that for another 6 weeks until my bone graph compleltey heals. I am also in physical therapy twice a week where I walk small distances without the boot. Hurts like a bitch, but that's part of it.

Depending on what kind of work you do, expect to use all of your sick/vacation time.....if your a desk jockey you are going to need a month or so at home to get over the big pain, after that it should be manageable.

If you are in a manaual labor trade, 4-6 months. You can't risk damaging it after the surgery is complete. There is so much trauma to the joint there are a lot of things that can go sideways.....this is the first time I have followed my doctors orders explicitly. I'd rather be safe than sorry

Wow, you probably needed to have it fused 15 years ago. I broke my navicular in 08. Looped out rolled to the right and put my foot down. Folded my foot all the way back. The ER doc, radiologist and an ortho doc all missed it. I was trying to walk it out and after a month went to a podiatrist. On their xray it showed the bones splayed out when I stood on it. Surgery to fuse the navic to the talus 5 days later, non-weight bearing for 3 months 2 months of PT and still had some pain. My foot stayed swollen for another 6 months but I have not problems with it other than being a little less flexible in the middle foot and being a little thicker. When I went back to work I had to wear 2 different size fire boots. I looked like I had a clown shoe on one foot and normal on the other. Lace up shoes and boots are no problem, some slip on boots OK, most slip on shoes are uncomfortable.

Ask Doctor about Replacement. Way out both options. I have friends that have done Fusion and replacement both were up and back to normal activities within a year.

I broke my navicular on April 22. The emergency room missed the break but lucky for me I have broken plenty of bones so I knew it was broken somewhere. I went to the foot specialist the next day. Yep broken. Had surgery a day or two later to have it screwed back together. I convinced the doc to remove the cast after 2 weeks and promised not to put weight on it for the full 6-8 weeks.. I went back to work the last week in July.
I think being able to move it and get the blood moving helped tremendously with recovery. It still hurts pretty good and it's defiantly a long recovery but I feel getting in early and having an active recovery instead of it being strapped in a cast really helped prevent a fusion for me. At least for the time being.

Bump.

I got pretty much the same deal as the op except displaced talus neck recently. It doesn't look very displaced but theyre talking hardware, all I really want to know is how long it took guys to be back on a bike?

Wearing suck ass Sidi crossfire 3 with 3 rides on them fwiw. The boot folded around the hinge system no problem.

I honestly think it could have been prevented if I were wearing my previous instincts but who knows. That and kept my machine beneath me of course.. I never had protection problems with my instincts but they come apart quickly.

Tech 10s offer the best support/hyperextension prevention? Figured I'd ask this time. Not wearing Sidi ever again...

My talus has been a nightmare I would definatly go ahead and get the hardware and be done with it. I was wearing instincts when I broke my talus and swore I would never wear em again ha.

Ya I did the surgery and they said the talus has a 50/50 shot that it won't die. How long did it take you to be back riding? The doctors tell me 8 months but that seems a bit dramatic...

I didn't get surgery because I had obamacare and they did not approve a mri right away. By the time they approved it the bone was half way healed and the doctor wanted to see if it would be ok with out surgery. So I have not having surgery until this winter.

I'm 47 and my Dr said I'm to young and active for ankle replacement surgery. They only last 7-10 years. Maybe when I'm 70 I will do it.

So how bad is your ankle and your quality of life with a bad ankle? I am in pain everyday and limited in activity because my ankle is so unstable.

It probably would have happened in any boot, I still won't wear sidi again. The calf too flimsy.

Didn't josh grant smash both his talus? I'm lucky I only have to deal with one.

Is plural talus "tali"?

He was on the podium today. The previous "tali" injuries don't seem to slow him down much.

So I fractured the Talus in both my ankles 8 weeks ago to the day. I can only walk real short distances so far. I'm graduating with my MBA tomorrow so I'm hoping to walk across that damn stage with my wheel chair on the other side.

Question for the guys with the Talus problems though, did you lose all your motion or something? And what is the realistic heal time? I was expecting to be back on my feet sooner than this.

I broke my talus and sub taylor dislocation in 1989. 3 pins, bone from hip put in ankle, crutches, no weight bearing for 8 months. I lost most rotation but up and down have 80% motion. Age 46 now. It has and still always hurts, if I over do it I can barely walk the next day. However I just deal with it. I can run (though I don't), bike and ride. Standing too long or hiking results in a lot of pain. I often walk with a limp. I choose to deal with it rather than fusion because it still works and surgery/fusion is no guarantee. I know my limits. I did get a cortisone shot a couple years ago do to the pain. Surprisingly since then it has been really good considering those shots usually only last for a couple months. Nasty injury to say the least! If it gets to the point I can no longer walk/ride etc only then will I consider fusion.
