Why is it we don’t have a US born racer competing in the MXGP?

If their series sucks so bad, how come they have consistently mopped the floor with us in anything other than stupidcross?

And the responses so far are not surprising but still make me shake my head…

As a bit of a shot in the dark, I would think it has something to do with supercross being preferred over motocross (given that SX only is becoming quite popular) and the fact it overlaps with the MXGP season makes an attempt to race the GP’s pointless as they wouldn’t have a solid run at the title. Also, they simply just might not want to.

For the most part, any American rider who could go over and compete (and win) in MXGP are on factory rides here in the US. They make more money as a factory rider here living at home, sleeping in their own bed. So to them, what's the incentive to go live in a foreign country and race? Most of the Americans that have went across the pond have had minimal success, except for Moore, Parker, Lackey, and Schmit.

I hate to say this but in the 70's and 80's a World Championship meant something to American racers, not so much anymore. Don't believe me go read some of Brad Lackey's stories about racing for CZ and living in Eastern-Block countries while trying to become a World Champion.

There’s no benefit to a factory mxgp team to bring a top American over. He’d need top money and struggle to break the top 5.

There’s no benefit to a top American going to race in Europe. Their value is high here and will only go one way after racing Jeffrey and Tim.

So that leaves 2nd rate Americans with no options here, Jordan Smith or Brandon Hartranft but reality is they would struggle to be top 20 and they can make more money racing Supercross only as privateers.

The final option is a close to retiring top rider. RV in 2015. Most likely if them to go for it is Barcia, he’s got in laws in England, obviously GasGas likes him and Gabrielle at Alpinestars is a fan. But it won’t be a 2012-13 Barcia.

Let’s be honest, no American in 2021 wanted to win a Moto as bad as Herlings and Prado did today.

Are they still not paying a purse out in MXGP? American riders race for a purse no matter how small it is. We have contingency money all over the place. Why aren't more of the riders in Europe coming to America is my question.

The only reason they'd come here now is if they wanted to go for the SX title. Or for one of the same reasons American riders would go to Europe at one time . Because they can't find a good ride . Anstie was in that situation. My how the tables have turned .

Would you want to race on them? That's why they suck... less money, a few good tracks, but mostly a bunch of terrible ones, and less than American living conditions in many places, ya.... i can see why our guys only race over there when they have to........

There is no money for the riders in MXGP.

The only racers making anything past covering their expenses are about 11 guys on factory backed teams, the rest are hobbyists looking to become one of the 11 guys making money.

Thank Mr. Loungo for that.

One other thing I found interesting is that the AMA and MX Sports officials at the very highest level went out of their way to find My Dutch racer in the pits at the nationals, and stop by to say "hi" and see if there was anything we needed.

My guy was shocked and surprised that so many officials came to check on us, he told me in MXGP if you are not one of the top 3 they tell you to basically go fuck yourself if you needed anything.

So the differences between how InFront runs the races as opposed to the AMA/MX Sports (who paid out prize money IN CASH), is a little different too.

No pay, rough tracks, long travel, weird food, away from home.

I think Villopoto killed any future American aspirations of an easy ride in the GPs.

Villopoto hurt the chances of a top American racing the GPS, but Herlings in Indiana was the nail in the coffin.

Why would any top American go there. Supercross is the worlds biggest series with the most eyes and money on it. And what is attractive about racing in russia and Asia on sub par tracks with half a line up of riders.

The mxgp riders make a great living. Tracks are real motocross not pussycrross watered and ripped. Travel is less mileage than the usa riders. The food is far better, non processed and real. Travel the planet for free. Zero downsides. It comes down to them knowing they wont win so why try.

It’s a huge adaptation to make both on and off the track. It’s very difficult to make that move and be successful, and its a pretty big risk, because its kind of out of sight, out of mind for all the teams in the US if it doesn’t pan out. We’ve seen a few guys come over recently, Covington, Sanayei, Harrison, Charbonneau. Covington had some success but in general it hasn’t really worked out

Americans believe the usa is the best country, most pay, best food, easiest life, hottest women etc. It’s not the 1970’s anymore. Every country offers freedom of choice and travel. Far more healthy food than the usa food supply. Non Instagram sluts. Real natural mx tracks. The mxgp series has been more competitive than the us nationals this year and more entertaining to watch. As much as I love the us nationals I would prefer 1 world SX series and 1 world MX series.

Covington is a head scratcher. He showed blazing speed at times in MX2 and while it's doubtful he would have seriously contended for a title in MXGP he certainly should have made a better showing than he did had he not left to try SX . Or maybe getting married affected him . Whatever the case he wasn't the same rider.
