Alpinestars SM-10 vs. Shoei VFX-EVO

2/26/2021 6:44pm
I'm looking at a new helmet and have tried both the Alpinestars SM-10 and the Shoei VFX-EVO on and they both fit great. But, I'm having a tough time deciding between the two and need some help deciding, thank you.

Because they used to be $200. Now that helmets are $500+, its no joke.

AStars for me, one of the lightest helmets I've ever owned.

Both have rotational impact tech, pick whatever one feels better on your head and that you trust more. I’d go Shoei but that’s just me.

I have the shoei and I am happy with it. I did go down to a medium with the evo compared to the old vfx-w. Not sure if I was wearing the wrong size or if the helmet fit changed a bit. Either way, try both on before you buy and get the one that fits best.

I’ve always been a Shoei guy. I only strayed once with a Bell. I got cross rutted entering a corner and crashed. Had a headache for a few days after that. Put the Bell up on the shelf and have been running the VFX-Evo ever since. I just love the way they fit me.

Can't speak for the Shoei, but recently pulled the trigger on the SM-10. Really enjoying it. Very light, comfortable, and great airflow. I do have one pair of older goggles that don't seem to settle into the eyeport area as well as my others, but it doesn't really bother me. Add another vote for the SM-10.

Damn, I was born in 87 good TIMES !

To me the Astars helmets look terrible, sorry to crush that part of it.
Although! I say this seriously, it's what is on the inside that counts on this one, MIPS came about and seem to change things up a lot. ALL the major motocross helmet brands have most likely put in a lot of research that goes into passing the DOT reg and exceeding that regulation . 6D was pretty remarkable technology that started shifting helmet standards

I Had a Shoei helmet when I raced BMX and loved that thing, it was a troy lee edition blue and silver, MMMM miss that thing! Plus Motosport has the Shoei on sale !
Dollar wise go with the one that fits the bank account!.

I’ve owned both. For me personally, the Astar helmet is the best fit I’ve ever had.
I also bought their DH MTB lid and that again was by far the best fitting helmet I’ve ever owned (I’m nearly 50).
I’ve never “smashed” my head so I’m not too sure how they hold up in that regard.

This may give you some useful information on helmets if you’re having trouble deciding.
Lets ask Alex Martin how he felt hitting the ground with his helmet that is handmade in Japan a week ago.

I love this reasoning. One dude got a concussion == helmet is trash.

If like me you’ve known someone die from head trauma racing, a concussion is oftentimes the outcome you hope for.

Thanks to everybody who helped me out with this, I picked up the Shoei VFX-EVO this afternoon. You can't go wrong with Japanese quality.
