I watched a kid destroy the 250 and 450C classes at the Iron Man qualifier on a YZ 125. Hell his lap times would have put him in the top five of the 450B Class and easily within the top 10 of A. Don't get me wrong the bike helps but its still the rider.

The current YZ 125 is 3-4hp down from the KTM on top but it's also an easier to ride motorcycle. It's a way better fit for kids coming off 85's or superminis. The YZ is more stable and the suspension (especially the forks) is way better than the KTM. The forks on the KTM's are horrible and the powervalve is prone to sticking.

Keep on mind the magazines test riders are full grown men when mostly teens ride and race 125's. Though I would love to have a 22.

The new YZ should close the gap power wise and I think they will sale like crazy!

E,start on a 125, really?, a hydraulic self adjusting clutch would be nicer.
I specifically mentioned the 250X - which is the off-road version.

e-start on MX 2-strokes is not really necessary imo
I agree on the x model. They sell good as it is, retrofit an e-start and it’s a game changer. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. If Yamaha adds a yz300, updated counter balanced engine, and estart, there would be a riot at the dealerships to get one. As much as I like my Husky tx300, it would quickly be for sale.

I haven't bought a brand new 125 in over 20 years....a 2000 YZ125....probably haven't been this excited for a new bike since then either.

The KTM/Husky/GasGas fans should rejoice, too. This update makes the Austrian brands want to continue R&D efforts as well.

So...we're going with All New...?

Hmmmm. OK. I'll probably get one; but, I ain't calling it "All New". I mean, it's not like it's a Fantic or the like.

I woke up, looked at youtube, and saw the 22' yz125 video, and my jaw dropped. I've had a smile on my face since.

obviously you weren't interested in the first place. pretty much everything but the frame has been updated. it's not a bad frame. pretty neutral handling.

I’m just glad they’re improving their two stroke line and not abandoning it.

Small improvements are fine. It’d be detrimental to the lineup If they make a completely new model and it’s a set-back on previous models.

Bravo to Yamaha.

My current bike is a 2020 ktm 150sx. My bike prior to the 150 was a 2018 yz 125. The ktm 150 is much more powerful than the yz125 but it is also a lot more work to go fast on.. It gets old hearing about the yamaha's outdated chassis and how the ktm is much more modern and competitive. The ONLY thing I like more about the 150 vs. the yz125 is the amount of power. Every other area I prefer the yamaha . The yz corners better , the yz suspension is light years better ,the yz power delivery is easier to go fast with and the yz gets more front wheel traction which is key to turning fast lap times. I do enjoy the ktm 150sx and often pull holeshots over 450's and can eat them up in corners or when the track gets really rough. Yamaha did not have to add much power to the yz125 to bring up to the husqvarna- ktm level of competitiveness and I'm comparing it to the 150sx not the 125sx. Small bore two strokes are not for everyone but for those that can ride them correctly it is hard to beat them on the fun factor.

I think it's an EXCELLENT chassis and one of the best "getting started" MX bikes that you can buy.

For the life of me I can't understand the 125 2-stroke craze. You guys have that much fun casing jumps while sounding like you're going fast? It takes a real high caliber rider to go fast on a 125 as these bikes were literally designed for teenagers coming off of 80's.

With all the modern tracks being designed around the power of 4-strokes, wouldn't it make sense to come out with a 350cc 2-stroke MX machine? "But you're not allowed to race it!" Well, your average rider on a 125 against 250 four strokes, you can find him way in the back of the pack, more than likely casing the shit out of everything, so how fun is that?

I completely get a 125 would be a fun bike if you're extremely fast, like damn near pro level. Just the challenge of being handicapped on power but still being competitive/winning races but what's the appeal for the average Joe?

If Yamaha came out with a YZ 350 2-stroke with all the new tech, bells and whistles nobody would be able to keep that bike in stock.
It's all about fun. In the last couple of years I've gone from a CR500, to a GYTR YZ450, and now to a 125SX. Next bike will probably be a 350. They all have their strong points and weak points, but particularly at my slow pace it's all about having a good time.

As for being fast enough- at my last race a couple weeks ago I was mid-pack on the start and finished mid-pack in the race. Vet race, multiple age classes on the line.

So, the 2005 Yz125 (which I bought new in 2004) shares most of the plastics, plus other parts with the steel frame 2002-2004 models. Considering the amount of upgrades, the 2005 was definitely a brand new bike.

With the 2022, the transmission, Connecting Rod, Piston, cylinder, head, pipe, ignition, cases, brakes, carburetor, and intake are new, along with the plastics and seat, with the seat being flatter, allowing moving around on the bike better.
The suspension has some refinements as well.
To me, that's a brand new bike. I expected a refresh to have a new frame, but I can't complain about the old one.

I'll be buying one.
Thanks Yamaha!

BTW: 125's are great at all ages.

A 150 kit like the old Italian Husky's would be primo. Come on Yamaha, use your noggens.

I have NFI how someone down-votes that?

Sir, that was a perfect post.

Where’s MX Culture? We need to get 6-8 of these and tour the county developing RACERS.

Don't get me wrong, I was not trying to cast dispersion or say that it is an "old" carb or a lame update. I actually think it's kinda cool. If the aftermarket got into offering mapping for the ECU there's quite a bit that can be done with the TPS and PJ. Although that never really seemed to materialize with the YZ250.

The way I see this potentially playing out... having the bike come stock with the PWK makes dropping a STIC in one step easier. If Yamaha managed to pick up a few HP on top and if the bike is responsive to the STIC this might make a quick and easy way to have a damn good 125.

I've had a YZ125 and YZ250 recently and now have a TC125. Even if the YZ125 is much improved, I likely wouldn't change simply because I love the small size and handling of the TC125. But I am still happy to see Yamaha make these promising updates.
Yeah I wish we knew the weight.

Anyone else think the tank looks like the rtech? I just compared and slightly similar but not as much as I originally thought. Shape of airbox has slight cues from it too imo.

Not one bit. I tjink it's great news.

The real shame is the rm125, they copied the ktm engine and it was real wolf in sheep's clothing, but will never see the light of day again in dealers
