Same bike with a hydraulic clutch and new graphics...and a sugar free monster edition

I know nothing, but I don’t expect a ground up new bike

They annouce bikes sometime in july. It will not be a new bike. Rumor thorugh the Yamaha walls is possible upgrades to the 2 stroke line? I guess when they showed the team the R7 they had the 2022 bikes on display.

I expect 3 more threads on this...

Hopefully not. My 21 only has 10 hours on it and I don't want it to be outdated just yet

The Yamaha clutch is awesome. I hope Yamaha does not jump on the (useless, unnecessary) hydraulic clutch bandwagon

Yamaha has been on a 4 year product cycle for decades. So with that in mind, if covid didn't disrupt that schedule (doubt it), then the 450 is scheduled to be all new for 2022

I mean downvote me now but I have called things like this in the past. I don't want to lose my job but I'll reopen this thread in a month.

Yep, only been doing race days and I think 1 practice day since I got it. Took nearly a month off to recover from a racing injury too

Personally I'm fine with a cable, you get better feel and it lasts forever. Lube it a couple of times a year and the cable will last longer than I've ever had a bike. Hydraulic clutches are overrated, my brother thought his was cool until the slave cylinder failed.

I agree. My 17 yz450 had the best clutch pull and feel of any bike I have owned.

But the Honda clutch already absolutely sucked in the old model, and the Kawi has kinda sucked (durability wise) since it has been hydraulic.

The Yamaha, by contrast, is already pretty good.

I hope they keep the changes simple so as not to obsolete my 2020! I'm starting to love the bike even with it's limitations (tight turns).

Now that Star Racing has been winning and/or up front on the current platform, they could afford to BNG this model for another year or 2 and still sell plenty. I bet sales go up actually.

What'd RV say on the Pulp show before the 2020 came out. "Don't fuck it up"

I agree. I much prefer the feel of a cable over the numbness of a hydraulic.

Lasts forever? Clutch cables suck

I have never liked the KTM hydraulic clutches(Haven't ridden a Honda or Kawi hydraulic clutch). The clutch on my 2018 just has no feel at all nor is it any easier to pull than my 2016 Yamaha was.

The only thing good about the KTM hydraulic clutch is that they last forever. Other than that I would take the Yamaha cable clutch any day. Way more feel, wide engagement window, and great level pull. Don't fix something that isn't broke IMO.

Yamaha clutch cable feel is so damn good. On my 19 Honda 250, that thing fucking sucked to pull in. Having to clutch that bike to life nearly every corner gave me arm pump. Defintely wanted a hyrdo on that bike. The Yamaha? Best Cable feel I have ever felt. I prefer it over the hyrdo on the KTMs. So YZ>KTM>Honda in terms of clutch feel

I have hundreds of hours on clutch cables with zero issues, what problems have you had?

Is yamaha the most anticipated bike release next to Honda?
No. I’d put Yamaha behind KTM/Husqvarna also for industry anticipation. For me personally though, it’s the most anticipated.

One thing im missing from KTM bikes is clutch. Those lasted longer than I had my bikes and zero problems. With Yamaha second set of plates and cable needs to go when new plates coming again. Also had to put harder springs to get it working properly. Those who complain KTM hydro clutch havent never used those.

I like the cable clutch way better on the Yamaha overall, currently riding a tc 250 and yz450f

This is my first ever hydraulic clutch, it feels like a light switch. There’s almost like a dead space feeling then just kinda dumps. That nice easy pull and durability is almost enough to win me over......almost

That’s because of Yamaha’s 4 year cycle. Isn’t KTM due next year? I’d guess we will see twice as many KTM threads next year.

My YZ has 60 hours on the stock clutch and cable, zero issues so far.

Oh totally, not trashing the cable. Just for Honda, it was just a great compliment to something that already has great lever feel. That and I’ve had them go snap before. You only inspect so much cable as the rest in a sheath.

I guess for me, it’s nice just refreshing fluid and seals on these newer machines. Just more in common with other items on the bike in terms of maintenance.

Maybe it’s just me being new to it having a Honda now, but I’m still amazed at how great the Nissin unit is on the Honda.

Kawi was bleh before as it’s so much better.

I can’t but feel how great it’d be on a Yamaha considering they already have an amazing feeling clutch.

But I digress, we all have our preferences 🙂
