MotoOnline.com.au: MEGA Bulk Fuels Monster Energy Kawasaki has confirmed it’s released Russian Aleksandr Tonkov from his contract at the halfway point of the 2017 Motul MX Nationals following frustrating opening five rounds.

Limited preparation had the 23-year-old enter the series on the back-foot, however despite displaying the speed to make Super Pole at Conondale, he currently sits eighth in the championship standings.

“This is not an ideal situation, however we are remaining focused and we are in good spirits coming into the second half of the motocross season,” said team manager Troy Carroll. “We will continue to compete in the 2017 MX Nationals with the most promising rookie in the field, Nathan Crawford and we will hopefully be announcing a replacement rider for Tonkov shortly.”

Tonkov’s departure from MEGA Bulk Fuels Monster Energy Kawasaki opens a prized seat in the premier MX1 category for the remainder of the outdoor season at least, with high profile riders such as Brett Metcalfe, Jay Wilson on the market following a turbulent number of weeks in the sport locally.

Russian GP coming up. Wouldn't be surprised to see him enter.

CR22

Must've been more than bad results to chunk it off at the halfway point. Bad blood?

Heard that Dan Reardon is likely to get the seat on the team for sx but unsure who will fill the spot for rest of motocross, would be good to see meaty get the ride

Why was he so badly prepared? Was it a last minute deal and he didn't expect to race again soon (because of his VISA trouble)?
I mean I don't really follow that series other than looking up results lists but those results were really not what the team brought him to Australia for.

I'd like to see Metty get the ride. Seems like perfect timing for both parties. Brett had issues with his team and is now a free agent, and Kawasaki needs a fill-in rider for the rest of MX. C'mon, Carroll, make it happen.

Wasn't Metty going to be riding a KTM? Or did that fall through also?

That was a one round deal.

Metty was looking for something for the rest of this year and through 2018 so if kawi can afford 3 riders through the SX and Reardon returns for AMA supercross then it might work or he might choose to wait and lock in a longer term ride.
