I kept hoping that they would show a still photo right at the finish line, so we could see for ourselves exactly how close it was.

Yeah that was ridiculous. Live timing showed Kiniry by 3 one thousandths of a second. There is no way that they could over turn that by eye. At least they should have a high speed camera across the finish line for review, and if they already do they should have shown the footage.

Here's to hoping they're better at that than determining whether someone passed on a red cross flag....lol.

I paused my dvr and went frame by frame and it looked like Kiniry to me too, it was not a absolute 90 deg. side shot though.

I think the AMA got it right, though it's ridiculously close. Peick's front wheel looks to be about an inch in front.

I still don't understand why the timing loop can't be at the top of the jump. Anyone care to explain?

AMA still cant figure out how to put the scoring loop in the over head finish line?

This is where someone who knows someone who works for the AMA tells me, how great their "friend" is..

Yeah, it makes no sense. Just run it through the finish line structure.

When they went to commercial break they said the AMA officials had ruled that Kiniry got it. Back from commercial break and they said Peick got it. WTF??

before commercial i though Ralph was pretty clear when he said the timing loop was at the bottom and finish at the top, this could change the results....then they came back from commercial and said it had indeed changed. only thing i did hear them say is Kiniry had the better time according to the timing before commecial.

I like both riders a lot, and that was one HELL of a race. Best of the night. I think Bobby K got it. That drag race to the chequered had everyone in my house on their feet.

The transponder system's margin of error is pretty wide. Certain there's at least a few inches of slop in the system. It *is* radio wave detection, after all, plus the loop probably moves around during bobcat operations plus the mounting location on the bikes plus just variabilities in plain old atmospheric and other interference. How variable is your cell phone? I'll bet you could run the two bikes by EXACTLY the same way across that jump 5x and see wildly varying results.

It looked to me like Peick just barely got him. As close as it gets.

Looks like they paid him back for last year robbery.
Last year he was the first to the checkers too.

They showed an angle from the other side of the finish line. I paused an did a frame by frame. You see peick peak the jump first but he's also a tall dude. I think what confuses the situation more is peick had a lot more speed over the finish line so the .003 of a second at the base of the jump, could have easily been made up on the face of the jump.

Just made another thread with this pic (mods feel free to delete that)

Now, I grew up in NY watching Kiniry so I'm a bit of a homer in that regard. But I'm trying to figure out what exactly happened. The broadcast made it seem like the transponder had Kiniry first, and then the ruling was reversed based on official sight (maybe video since that is allowed in the rules). Right?

If per the AMA rulebook "the officially designated finish line is defined as the uppermost leading edge of the finish line obstacle," then why didn't Kiniry race the main? Looks like his rear tire is farther than Peick's in the picture. Maybe the YZ is just shorter and Peick's front wheel did go over first. That is so close though!

They should have sent them both! There's 2 extra gates
I'm with you. That was the best race of the night and those pictures really illustrate that.

Yeah you'd kinda of think that after having this happen once before you'd just go ahead and change it...

If I was the promoter I would have used the extra gate and gave them both a spot in the main and paid the start money. Remember the UFC ultimate fighter finally? Forrest Griffin and Stephen Bonnar both recieved contracts for an awesome fight to a near draw.

Yeah, compared to the relative snoozer the main turned out to be, the 450 LCQ was the best race of the night.
