Race enduros or scrambles

OR

At the MX races in the beginner, 40+ and 50+ I see guys out there racing "for fun" and not trying to be a hero and know their limits. Some of them even roll all the jumps. No shame. They are supporting te sport, and having fun.

Like mention. At least they are out there having fun and wont have to take a helicopter ride.

i am 34, took a 14 year break and started riding this feb, felt great and never felt like I was over my head or needed to do this or that to impress anyone, well a month ago I figured I would race a little semi local winter series, I got second place in +30 out of 5, my first race back in prob 16 years or better. I was hooked again, next week which was 3 weeks ago I went to round two and in practice I over jumped a little rhythm section, I was in the middle and had a bike on each side of me closing in, I landed hard and screwed my leg up pretty bad, I broke the tib and fib and shattered which ever the larger one is, I have had two surgeries already and waiting on the 3rd hopefully the last one next Friday...moral of the story is its in my blood, yeah I wish I wouldn't of got hurt and have to be a hardship on everyone for a few months, but its normally something that we all enjoy and cant get enough of..... the worst part is I have a brand new 18 crf
450 I bought before that weekend that I haven't even got to try out yet!!!!!! its going to be a left over by the time I get to ride it hahahah.... my family has been very supportive and great, they don't want me to quit something I enjoy so much, and I always look at it like it could of been worse, I could of been in a car accident instead of racing, etc etc or I could of broke my back or neck...

if its something you love stick with it and don't ride over you head, if you have doubts I would hang it up personally

Since most of the new $9,000 bikes are purchased by the +40 crowd you would think tracks/clubs would cater to that demographic with track layout. Sadly they do not. I like rough tracks with zero jumps and big elevation changes. They no longer exist. Jump. Turn. Jump. Turn. Repeat. Flat ground.
Probably will just give it up since none of the local tracks seem to be in touch with the demographic changes over the last 10 years.

Get a 125, feel faster than you are and always ride with a smile!
I approve! ^^^^^

I'm going to be 39 next month and I bought a 125 this past spring and it's the first dirt bike I rode since 2001. I'm 220 and way to big for a tiddler, but you know what, I was smiling ear to ear every time we went out riding (trails/woods). I get the urge to go do a practice day a a local track on a Sunday, but I also don't want to get hurt doing something I shouldn't. Just do what you feel comfortable doing and have fun! That's what it's about....not hucking the big jump for the Instabanger. You don't bounce as well as you get older lol

It's like when you are driving down the highway and you see a pothole in the road and you stare at the pothole and tell yourself not to hit the pothole but you are so focused on the pothole that you drive straight into the pothole.

If I'm out there just focusing on hitting my lanes and going as hard as i can for as long as i can i generally ride well. If i go out and start second guessing things or wondering what would happen if I hit that kicker or came in too hot then I will crash or at least get out of shape and have to back it off.

I'm 33, married, 2 kids and run my own business that requires me to be be on my feet all day. If i focus on the what if's they generally happen

I totally struggled with it once we had our first kid... I just couldn't get my Wife and Daughter out of my head at the track. But for me it's riding with others as much as anything else. One of my riding buddies said i'm much better on the MTB than the Moto, I don't think I am at all, I just don't have anything to worry about on the MTB except myself.

Main thing is have as much fun as you can and be comfortable. Some of that might be the track and bike combo you're riding and who you ride with....

If we had a private-ish sand track near by I could ride with just my buds I would for sure be buying a 150 or 250 two stroke and putting a smile back on my face. Just not worth it to me right now.

At 44 I think about getting hurt all the time and get nervous before I ride or race, but as soon as I get on the bike I forget all about it.

I think thats normal for any adult..no worries. I also remind myself I could get hurt in a car crash...working on the ladder at home..you name it. If I stopped riding and got hurt doing something non-moto I'd be pissed! Laughing

One of the keys to not getting hurt is deciding before you ride what you will and won’t do on the track.

I’m going to jump all 80 foot table tops but I’m not going to even try that 100 foot table top, doesn’t matter who does it I’m not!

The reason I won’t jump some really big stuff now is not because I think I can’t make it (if you can make it I already know I can also) it’s because the landing. The older somebody gets the harder the landings are when you flat land something or land in a hole or a rut. Now I’ve been hurt just because of the hard landing and didn’t even crash!

I had a similiar revelation in 2007 when I was 39 after having a bad crash. Ended up in the ER with broken bones & had to have a couple of surgeries. Was off of work for about 4 months, but really needed to be more like 6 months with the specialists recommendation. Times were hard, but I learned a valuable lesson in the time off.
As you get older you no longer bounce back from crashes & it's not wise to try to hang out with the young bucks during a moto. Best advice I can give you is when you ride just enjoy it & have fun. Don't push yourself over your limits as your the only one who knows the boundaries.
Lesson learned my family comes 1st since they depend on me, but that doesn't mean I still can't enjoy the sport I love & have fun. Know your limits & be safe...
