70 years? While I would no longer use the phrase "Jap crap", it fell out of usage in the late 80s, not 1950, as "setting the sport back 70 years" would imply.

I didn't see the press conference, what was it used in reference to?
While I agree that this term may be considered derogatory when describing people, I don't think that saying something like "jap bikes" has any negative connotation.
It's all about perception I guess. I was dumbfounded when I learned that the term "Oriental" in reference to people is now considered demeaning (by some at least).

In today's society, you must only refer to people by what they wish to be referred to as. Otherwise, you are heartless and hateful.
As a happily married heterosexual American citizen, I want everyone to refer to me as "normal" from now on. Any other term is offensive.

You obviously have no clue about the history of the word and it's meaning still today for the Japanese people. There are a lot of things that people are way too sensitive about in this day and age but this is not one of those cases.

Having studied a lot of WW2 history I understand why the word was used in the 1940's. But there is no excues for using it today in reference to Japanese products or people. And i am about as politically incorrect as you can get.

That was extremely stupid. It's no secret how easily offended people get nowadays and how popular cancel culture is. Whether you are or aren't one who gets offended easily, if you're in a position to be speaking in public you HAVE to make sure you aren't saying shit that would even remotely offend someone or get you fired. This isn't a snowflake thing, it's understanding where the world's at in 2020. Did this guy mean any ill intent with his comment? No I don't believe he did. Are there people out there who look for any reason whatsoever to get someone fired or in trouble? Absolutely.

Imagine the PR shit storm that would be coming this sport's way if Supercross was as big as the NFL.

I have absolutely zero press/interviewer/media skills and even I know better than that.

I'm so anti-PC/agree that everyone today is looking to be offended and overly sensitive. However, JAP is just not cool to use. It is a very old school term that had WWII negative connotation....I remember getting reprimanded by my dad for saying it when I was a little kid. Don't even know where I picked it up...most likely school.

My dad is a Vietnam vet, and his dad was in the military but died in 1940 shortly before WWII. I used the term in question when I was about 8 or 9 years old, and my dad stop me in my tracks and told me to never say that again. I could tell it highly offensive to my dad, and others as well. There's no doubt that in this day and age, there is no room for that type of language.

Something tells me that “person” won’t be interviewing any Japanese bike riders. I do know if I was a higher up at any of the Japanese manufactures, that guy would be an outcast, I would tell my riders to never speak to that guy.

I don’t think there was any bad intent to that at all. Lack of awareness for sure, it would be good to fill that guy in. I definitely don’t think he deserves to be gaslighted over it. I’d be willing to bet if somebody thoughtfully explained to him that that’s not the best word choice, he would totally get it. Everybody has room for improvement👍🏻
