Can someone please tell the press not to use the term "Jap"?

While I agree that this term may be considered derogatory when describing people, I don't think that saying something like "jap bikes" has any negative connotation.
It's all about perception I guess. I was dumbfounded when I learned that the term "Oriental" in reference to people is now considered demeaning (by some at least).
Two different articles, from two different perspectives about it here:

In today's society, you must only refer to people by what they wish to be referred to as. Otherwise, you are heartless and hateful.
As a happily married heterosexual American citizen, I want everyone to refer to me as "normal" from now on. Any other term is offensive.
Agree with this.
How terrible of him.
We should just agree not to call people something they dont wanna be called, regardless of reason, and just move on with our lives.

Imagine the PR shit storm that would be coming this sport's way if Supercross was as big as the NFL.
I have absolutely zero press/interviewer/media skills and even I know better than that.
If it weren't for double standards, many people would have no standards at all.
