We have a big annual local race around here that used to just fall under the local organizations rules and class structure. This year it is AMA sanctioned so if you aren't an AMA member, you need to become one and the classes are now structured like AMA classes which is different than our local structure. My question is, what is the advantage to AMA sanctioning at the local level?
Maybe most tracks are ok with this too as they have a well known entity in regulation of their track.
I could be way off here but that is my best guess.

Regarding the insurance the price is pretty much the same whether you purchase insurance through the AMA or use your own provider. They have a list of approved providers, and I think there is a process to have your carrier added if they are not on the list.
The promoter also has to pay an annual charter fee and a sanction fee for each race. I promote flattrack, and we do two rounds of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Series, and they are generally more successful than our regular events.
It was about the same price but you could get it without scaled track drawings and 100 pictures that all had to be approved by the underwritter.
Adding that we are an oval track, which probably eliminates the need for more pictures.
As far as local races it provides some kind of uniform rules that are what Lorretta's uses.
