I thought this air fork was set up so a leaking seal would never let the fork collapse?

I've seen this happen. Air leaks to the other chamber and the suspension gets pulled down. My friend bought a '15 closed cartridge fork and liked it better right away

Ive never been a fan of the air fork idea in general because of this possibility with any brand air fork. I personally saw a triple chamber fork do the same thing. It's not a mass problem with any brand but a possibility with any of them. I still don't like those odds... I'll stick to good ole fashion spring/oil forks.

I find it fishy when a company offering a "spring conversion" is talking about an air fork failure on an air suspension product that is unlike the other systems on the market.

This is either super informative or very clever spam. I guess time will tell.

WP offers the spring conversion for their own AER48 fork

Read this elsewhere.

If it's true, surely we are going to see the end of the airfork... You can't sell a 12000 bike and not have functional suspension.

It's retarded.

"The 48mm WP AER air fork is a separate function leg design, meaning one leg contains the air spring and the other leg handles the damping duties. This design means the AER fork cannot go totally flat while riding even if a fork seal happens to leak or blow out. " -Keefer

I'm picking up my FE 450 in about 10h. I will talk with my dealer about the forks and if KTM or WP are aware of a pattern of failing forks.

Good luck with that! Unless you are really buddies with the dealer!

Ah ok... Well fingers crossed you can.

I'd be pissed... There are a few people saying they're having rear shock lock-ups too.

Imagine dropping 12K on a bike and having locked suspension?!?!

If the argument about failing aer fork puts you off the bike, then by rights people should not use a ktm with a front wheel for worry of it failing too.

Ktm have also recalled capacitors, so by the same rationale people should look for an old school mechanical points for fear of the electronics going bad.

Everyone has hailed ktm for their constant development, but the user is the one doing the beta testing.

Suzuki haven't done a recall since 2008, and that's not surprising since the 2016 is pretty much the same bike.

Is it less or more retarded than everyone that spent 10000 on ktms over the last few years and then went out and spent 3000 more on new forks?

I've heard that they already have a fix for this issue and will be installing KYB SSS forks developed by Yamaha and Jody/MXA approved! Whistling

Is it all full retard?!

Wish KTM would just get a set of SSS's and measure them up, copy it and be done with it.

Especially when you consider the YZs basically won shootouts on the merits of their suspension.

I wish they'd just do a production line version of the cone valve, without the cone valve, just as Billy at powerband removes.

and look a lot like SSS or Showa TC forks

Wasn't the article saying it locks rather than collapse?

The video says you'll feel more of a discomfort ride rather than collapsing.

The fork is technically not loosing air when this happens. The air travel to the other side of a seal, holding it down in its stroke. It is a seal issue.

In Sweden it has only happen (from what i know) when it has been minus degrees outside (celcius). I have not had this issue, and none of the other i ride with. I have ~18h on my fork. My bike was produced 13 Nov 2015.

I figured that, a friend of mine with the 250 sxf had the "collapsing" because of the seal. They have a fix for it and it only happens when it's about -5 to -15 degrees celcius outside. But i will ask my dealer about that.

This has happend two times for me...the fork will not collaps! The fork will be stuck 100mm down in the stroke.

When it happend to me i was driving in -15 Celsius and - 4 Celsius.

I have tested the X-ring inside the cartridge, and have put them in the frezzer and the X-ring was like plastic after this. Have also put it in the fridge and the X-ring was quite stiff there also. Have som other X-rings from another industry , with the same dimensions and this one didnt changes so much after the fridge and the frezze.

I have not tested this new X-rings yet but I will maybe do it this weekend.

This. It makes sense since it happened to my friend 1 month ago in a SX in the Netherlands. Scary for sure.

My dealer said that there is a seal/oring that needs to be replaced, he will have the new one next week and he will change it. It should solve the problem.
