I think the 250 class showed 42 and 450 showed 45. That’s ridiculously low ain’t it?

Is that just an early release of it?

“Dust off the boots Cletus we only gotta beat 2 people to make the night show!”

Pretty standard; probably just hasn't been updated and/or riders are waiting to the last minute to register.

But figure only half the entries make the main.

You just have to roll up the night of the event and enter, so there could be hundreds more just waiting to do that.....

Cool

40 is plenty as long as they are the 40 best available, excluding injuries.

After that the talent pool drops off drastically.

Have to keep in mind it’s still a week out, lots of entries should come in from Monday to Friday. Baggett, Bogle, and a few other usual names are still
missing, even though you know that they will be there.

When you read that section of the AMA site every week, you start to see that entries either come in waves or that the people in Pickerington have to manually update the list.

How the fuck can you just rock up and enter an FIM World Championship Event.

Its not like you are going to wake up on Wednesday the week of the race and suddenly go ' oh I fancy a run out at the weekend, shall we go to A1' . You should register and enter a month before each race and unless you are injured , you lose your money if you don't show,

I am with Matthes on this, how can you get recognition in a sport where they keep the riders a secret till the last minute.

Its bullshit

Well, crap. Couple ways to think about it. I remember there being close to 80 in the 125 class. 40 go to the night show, 22 only make the the main then even after making a main going to the Sunday Golden State race where you would see a whole lot of main event making riders and a lot of the non qualifying riders. That surely doesn’t happen anymore.

On the other hand the 250 class is a lot more professional now. Not an “introductory” to SX.

Nowadays it’s training facilities in place of local races and lower counts at SX. I mean, theoretically you only really need the top 22 for a main.

Good or bad for the sport in a whole? It’s my belief its bad, if you aren’t at the top. Harder to race your way to the top now. The opportunity to showcase what you have is a bit less and the playing field is a bit further gapped

Yeah, and I’m sure some of the slowest kids back in the day that didn’t make it went on to get better and make it in future years.
I tend to think as a marker to the health of the sport it’s maybe not a good thing either.

I can tell you, my first time on a SX track was the second round of the 1998 season, it was LA Coliseum. The weekend before I was watching in the stands. I came from a decent amateur career, but nothing special. But I raced every weekend.

My only advice heading out to my first practice was from Mike Craig, make sure you are in third gear for triple. That was it. Didn’t make the night show.

Career best 7th in a main in ‘99

Factory KTM ride in 2000.

First time I had an actual SX practice track was 2001 at Elsinore MX.

Those days are long gone. It’s at a completely different level (higher). But I also believe the local level has suffered. I blame the training facilities and the emphasis there is to be at them at the amateur level.

It used to be the fast kids and aspiring pros raced every single weekend. The beginner kids and slower kids would see these kids and want to be like them. That meant more racing. Now it’s hawk the house and go all in to train all week and race only selected youth nationals.

It’s my belief if there was more emphasis on the local level of racing and then we would see more racers.

Don’t get me wrong, there are great people and the idea of the training facilities are good, they make great riders.

However if little Tommy sees racing on TV and he wants to do it, it’s hard to find the local races, even if they get there and they have low turnout. Then the parents learn that to be successful the kid is going to need to drop out of school and move away train. It just isn’t the same anymore. That, and Fortnite. I blame Fortnite.

The 2020 entry fee for Mercedes is just under $5.5m USD.

Even if Williams hadn't scored a single point, their entry fee would still be $556,509 USD.
