Gang,
Merry Christmas! The story of the how the video below came together is a bit long but we have had a rough version of this lying around for several years and no one had ever seen it.
We showed the rough edit to the fine folks at Yamaha back in the spring and they said they wanted it for their 60th Anniversary celebration. It was a great night for Yamaha and Mike Bell and maybe just a "good" night for Bob Hannah, though perhaps a bit frustrating.
So, here it is. Enjoy it, share it and thank Yamaha for making it happen for the world of mx to enjoy.
Have a great holiday everyone.
Best,
Todd

Do you have footage of that night's qualifiers too?
That was the first or one of the first races with the new backward falling gates. I remember a few riders getting caught behind them. I was sitting by the infamous mud hole. I'll never forget seeing the brightest smile ever on Mike Bell as he rode by after taking the checkers.
Just sent the link to my Mom.
She and my step dad took me.
Fully addicted to MX after that night.

Thanks for the post, and, oh yeah, I was indeed there that night.
Please share with others if you think they'll like it!
On a sidenote, Bell, Hannah and Semics sure look like they've taken care of themselves over the years.
Thx
This is my first-ever SX. I was 6 1/2 and I remember this being the day my pops turned into my idol. I knew he was the manager at Indian Dunes, but when I saw people I thought were important and top riders going out of their way to say hi to him, that made pops a lot taller lol. Then, when I was able to go down to the track, I thought my dad was the coolest dad on earth. I remember to this day almost every lap of this race too. I liked Hannah, but Mike Bell gave me one of his jersey before the race, so he was my new favorite. I wore the Bell jersey to bed that night. Dude was tall, that jersey hit my ankles. Haha.. From that day on Bell was my favorite rider. I met a good deal of the top guys at one time or another in late 70's 80's at Indian Dunes, but Bell stood out as the coolest to talk to as a kid. Just wish I still had the jersey. .
See Todd, you have me and probably many more with our heads back in 1978 this Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas everyone!!
