Good stuff. Lived a lot of it first hand. Rolling up to the line in August of 73 on the first Elsie 125 in Texas was fun. Only took about two months and the gates were full of them.

Great article!

I forgot about Jam Sports, they really did get hosed by the AMA and Clear Channel.

Tony Blazier will/should be picked up by RacerX or MXA. Stamp it. Best writer the sport has ever had. I lived this sport for 30 years and I learn something new every time I read one of his articles. Great work. His youtube vids run non stop in our garage. Can't thank him enough.

Got the holeshot by a mile and the bike promptly died, (inciting loud cheers from the toaster cheering section).

I forgot to turn on the gas.Blush

Still made it back to 3rd of 28. 2nd OA on the day. I was officially in love. To this day that moto stands out to me as a 'defining moment'.

That might be one of the best motocross related articles I've ever read.

Thanks.

And, getting more health conscious sponsors signed up will help altruistically, with what true motoheads are about.

I personally don't wanna increase energy drink sales unless vodka is involved.

As a guy who has a degree in Journalism, I can say that I think this is a very well written piece. It's something we need a lot of, but don't get nearly enough of.

tblazier, great article!

I am curious about your thoughts (and anyone elses) about the impact of the C.A.R.B (California Air Resources Board) standards on the 2t/4t developement? If I remember right, it was '97 that the standards were to be implemented, and it was the pressure of the impending doom of the 2 stroke bikes in the US (except for "closed course racing"...effectively banning 2 strokes on public lands in California and elsewhere), that pushed technology like the YZ400, and prompted the AMA to put into effect the one year moratorium on displacement so the 400 could compete in the 250 class. I think your analysis of the current 250 class (with respect to 2 vs 4 stroke and displacement rules), is spot on. Its time to finally lift the "one year" moratorium.

As much of an Elsinore 125 freak as I am, had that 74 KX125 hit the shores six months earlier things may have been a lot different. What a great little bike.

I especially liked the description of the imcompetent bumbling idiots also known as the AMA. Sounded like something I would have penned.Smile

Now Tony needs to write an article about the grass roots racing that was going on in the 60s and 70s when the guys rode what they brung and often got to the races with their bikes in the trunk or on bumper racks...There's no way to describe how much fun it was in those days......

tblazier is the Vital "MVP" (most valuable poster)!

While I was reading it I couldn't help but think how you should write a motocross history book.

I thought it was good except failed in a few areas.. Not mentioning Roger Decoster? No mention of Jeremy McGrath and his domination of SX? On Any Sunday? There could've been a lot more..
