My kids recently turned 8yrs old and have been riding for fun in the backyard for the past two years. First on CRF 50s and then PW 80s this past year. I tried a Cobra 50 too early and could tell it scared them so I parked in the back of the garage and decided to just let them have fun until they felt like they wanted something more.

Back in early December, my son was struggling to clear some of the jumps on the track we built because the PW just couldn't pull enough speed and he finally said: "Dad, I think I need a faster bike". I didn't really want to go the "50" route so Santa stuffed a KX65 down the chimney this year.

They're in that range of getting big for a 50 but still small for a 65 so I lowered it an inch and a half and installed a Rekluse to help with the transition from 3-speed auto play bike to full racing MX 2-stroke. The custom springs came on Friday so I installed all the parts over the weekend and yesterday was the big day. I have to say that I was a little worried but with the Recluse it couldn't have gone any smoother...

Slip, this is fantastic! Well done!

I'm in the same boat with my son who will turn 8 in a couple months. I don't want to go the "50CC race bike" route at all. Looking to go straight to a 65. Your kids look at home on it!

Great bike choice and setup, why don't manufacturer's hit this niche? Shorter and auto.

Interestingly enough, with the custom shorter shock spring and Recluse clutch, I'm still into it for less than a YZ or KTM 65. It helps that I cut the fork springs and did the lowering myself but it seemed the reasonable decision for kids just learning. A Cobra or 50SX would be just about as tall but with smaller wheels and wheelbase it would be a much less stable platform to learn on.

I remember taking my youngest to the KTM shop when he was 3 and him crying when they started the 50. He stayed on his PW for another couple years before getting a KTM.

Awesome, I just installed a taller seat, handle bar risers and foot pegs on the pw50 in hopes to get more time out of the pw. I want to skip the fast 50's. I have been eyeballing the kx65 with recluse, flywheel weight, lowering link etc. I have a ttr110 that I will lower and let him get used to it than will most likely go to the kx65. Keep us posted on how everything progresses and what mods were done. Thanks

They do, the KLX110L. You can add a spacer to the clutch and make it semi-auto. There are so many motor mods available up to 178cc and suspension upgrades are available again from aftermarket companies as they get bigger. It's the perfect kids bike that does not want to race. If they want to race, add more CCs. If the kids get tired of it, you have the perfect pit bike.

I ordered a flywheel weight I found on ebay for $70 but found out when I tried to install it that it fits the KX 60,65,80 &85 but requires a spacer plate for the 60/65 ignition cover to fit. I called Steahly this morning and they are sending the spacer to make it work. They did really well but I could see them snapping they're heads back when started getting comfortable and twisting harder. The cool thing was with the clutch they could keep the rpm's below "powerband" and putt it like a play bike where normally it would stall.

That has to be the ultimate "come full-circle' moment. Smile I'm guessing memories of a Slipdog piloted KX60 were brought back to the present and seeing your kids riding that KX65 tops that by a mile. You're doing it right!

That's literally the niche this bike is for. From a mild mannered, super low to the ground wee little bike to full on 65cc sized MX ripping machine, all in one adjustable package.
