As many times as I've wanted to punch Jody Weisel in the nose for his rare talent at being an ass, this is probably the best column I ever read about Vet motocross. At least it's the best SHORT one. So Kudos to Jody, he really penned a masterpiece...

I love this line:

"They remember how their mothers felt when she found out that they were racing motorcycles. She cried. Somehow, when she cried, they knew that they were onto something really fun. I think Sigmund Freud wrote that anything that makes your mother cry is worth doing."

Genius.

He recently republished another great article in MXA about how his dad never saw him race. Very good read.

I've always wondered why Dowd never races the Vet World championship race. Would it make him ineligible to race a national ?

I think the time has come for a vet championship run with the nationals with a one moto format. I would find it much more interesting then the wmxa. 35+ for the age group.

Excellent article. A lot of people hate on Jody but I always admired him and the other old timers that race EVERY weekend.

My favorite line was the one about the guy in neon yellow about to stuff a dentist from omaha at speeds approaching 13mph. LOL!

Having followed Jody's Box for more years then i care to admit, i have been irratated by his rantings, amused by the funny stuff and opposed to some of his opinions..........but sometimes his opinions are just flat out cool.

This article will rank as a highpoint for many of us who are "a certain age".

Well done.

I am young enough yet to be elegible to race in the Vet class, hell I am not even in a position to be racing due to the cost of it like those young guys he mentions but man..... I almost cry with this, I truly hope to be one of those. It was a great read

Great piece of word slaying. Nice to see someone make the effort for the internet. The portraits were great.

Say what you want, but in my opinion Jody is right a lot more than he is wrong, and has a genuine interest in the sport.

haha. I've had mine since 06 too. I'm a weekend warrior and a sporadic one at that, so does the job! Smile Although I do lust for an SX150.

The cool part of being an ole mx racer is you actually enjoy your 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th birthdays when the rest of the world hates getting older. haha

true
what is the VetX class age breakdown now? when I raced a few years ago it was 30-36 for my group. Is it still those ages? Im 38 now what age class would I run at Novice level?

I noticed OTHG is a bit slower dudes at same class level than VetX, what are the age groupings there?

in 04, I crashed myself into retirement at the young age of 40.

Funny thing though 'cause I was riding the fastest I ever had.

(there's a lesson there, somewhere)

I used to buy MXA for the bike tests. Then after I stopped racing I bought them for Jody's box. I stopped buying them when they started re-running old Jody's boxes in the new mags.

I grew up on crazy Dave, lovely Louella Jimmy mac and all the other characters in his column.

I was pretty happy to get a nod from Jody in this article. Though why he wants to throw rocks at me,I'm not sure.Tongue But one of my most enjoyable things(besides racing with these guys most Saturdays) is watching 80 year old Feets Minert going at it every weekend and then chatting with him about everything and nothing.Smile
