96 CR250 buy?

Edited Date/Time 8/11/2015 3:11pm
Have an offer to get this 96 CR250 on a trade. Needs a crank which shouldnt be too big of an issue, but id love to build something really nice out of it. opinions?

If i go ahead with it this will turn into a build thread.

What is the value of the trade? (i.e. are you taking this in lieu of $400? more or less? 400 is hypothetical) This will give everyone a better idea if you should pull the trigger or not.

Looks like a fun project.

Pipe and swing arm stickers look fresh..... and judging by the rear fender some Seth Enslo wannabe owned it. He probably got lit like Seth but never had the nuts to go big....

Not sure if that's a project I'd want to tackle or not, but I can tell you that that bike is definitely a '95.

Thats a 95, not a 96.

The 96 had a black airbox, and black shrouds.

It also might be a 1994 model, with 95 shrouds (it has a 94 seat cover).

Find the V.I.N. on the frame, and count 10 places from the left. The 10th digit will be a letter:

A 80
B 81
C 82
D 83
E 84
F 85
G 86

If you like it and think it will fit into what you want, then it's priceless, to you anyway. Good luck and have fun with the build !!!

I had a 94 for a little while, great bikes. It had a nice torquey bottom/mid to it with a full pro circuit system . one of the best looking bikes too in my opinion.

Based on the airbox and ghosting where the tank stickers use to be, that's a '95. It's a shame that bike didn't get properly stored because it really doesn't look like it has many hours on it. It has minimal paint wear on the clutch cover and frame. It also looks like it may have the original rear sprocket.

Great bikes. I love mine.

My '96 CR was one of my favorite bikes ever, once I got the suspension dialed. Wish I still had one.

Seems to me the 95's had fork and crank issues, right from the factory. Maybe this one has so few hours, the problem finally reared its ugly head. I'd scoop that thing up in a heartbeat, Honda's of that era are great bikes, mechanicslly. Fix the crank and anything else, and ride it for 10 years.

I had a '92CR. I had FC do the suspension. In their words 18 years ago, "We have some great numbers for this bike". It was the best 250 MX bike I've ever owned. Great power, great turning, fun to ride. Etc. I don't know the differences, but I imagine the '92CR and '95CR are very similar. Also some guy named Jerry MaGarth liked his '93CR a lot! SmileSmile

The engine was the same basic design from 1992-2001
nothing specifically wrong or inherently flawed
Some had considered this generation the best CR250 engine of all time
