Woohoo! Man I dont know if this has been discussed on here or not, but I was forwarded this link the other day and finally got around to watching it. Talk about being agressive for the final transfer spot?! LOL

I had forgotten all about this crazy race and pass between Hawthorne and Sommo. I was racing 125 this year and remember watching it in the stands between races. These two were infamous for their last lap heroics to make the main, but Sommo almost takes Hawthornes head off!

What would the fine be today for this move? LOL Check it out at 1:27 in. But dont forget to keep watching till the checkerd flag. Gotta love the old days. And how about all the trash in the dirt?

Yeah that was a good race , there were a lot of good races in the 88 season. I remember racing on amature day at the Seattle king dome back in 88 or 89 and they pulled a car door out of the face of the triple during practice lol. There was all kinds of garbage in the dirt back then..........I also got a autographed poster that night from Denny Stephenson on the number 360 Kawasaki sporting the blue and white Malcom Smith gear. Is that you by any chance ? I still have the poster lol...Smile

that was awesome. thats how it should be today. late 80's to mid 90s was the best SX racing ever. 4 strokes have made SX boring as shit to watch

That was some good racinf but man those bikes sure lookes squirly and they seemed to have a hard time clearing all the obsticles smoothly ....the guys nowadays are going a lot faster imo. Still I the racing was as good as it gets wonder what they would've done on modern equipment

Faster bikes are what have made sx/mx boring. Put everyone on 40 hp 250s again and watch the racing tighten up. Example: 250f class.

Spoke to Hawthorne today. What a great dude.

I was a kid in a candy store that night in Dallas.

Mcphilly, I had a pretty sweet mullet in that Malcolm Smith ad back then. LOL Kinney Jones and I headed up to Ty Davis' track in Hesperia for the photoshoot. I remember when I saw the proofs after I was like, "Check out the hair hanging out the back of the helmet!" LOL

Altho it was never nearly as long Dogger's mullet was, as Bon Jovi as Bradshaw's or as thick as the Budman's, I thought it was the bomb. It was all about the hair back then! LOL

And wb173, next time you talk to Dennis, ask him if he remembers that weekend when Sommo tried taking his head of with his RM250!
