And did many (any?) have air conditioned motor homes to take a shower in and cool off between motos? I remember watching guys wade out into the retainage pond used for track watering at Red Bud to cool off between motos! Often they'd be sitting in lawn chairs under an awning between motos, sometimes still in their gear.

Lechiens bike was hopping all over the place. He was barely moving. Dude had style for days. Effortless technique. Should have slowed a bit, was leaving everyone.

Loved the Carlsbad USGP. ABC ran the 2nd moto live in 86 ....I think that was the last one ?

Can you imagine the riders now riding a beat out blue grove pit like carlsbad?

Lechien, damn, at 4:30 on a works 500.... can you imagine him on a 450 in his prime.

Bailey and glover was such a great rivalry. Both classy and so smooth on the 500s.

Glover is underated considering the pig he was riding against the works honda.

How about the riders pushing their bikes up to the line? Hell, even privateers don't do that anymore.

Suppers ready....now it's cold...pissed off wife. That brought back so many memories. Watching those Carlsbad GP's on WWOS was so awesome. The gnarly ass track, the larger than life riders, the bad ass announcers and production. In some ways I'm not really sure the sport is in a better place than back then. 45 minute motos and basically no track prep made for a different animal for sure. Anyhow, thanks fugger. BTW, is it true you have a bumper sticker that says, "I like lipstick around my dipstick"?

Agree with all of that.

This was the heyday of motocross and those guys don't get enough credit for what they did or how competitive it was.

Why can't there be just one track on the schedule that is as rough or slippery as that? take out the jumps, don't rip the track and let it form the personality of a rottweiler. To add spice, make the moto's 45 minutes and see what sort of global interest a race like that would create.

Waited all year, every year to catch the USGP on Wide World of Sports. I had '84&'85 recorded on VHS. My brother and I watched them at least 3 times/wk for 2-3 years.

Stood at the bottom of the freeway with my pops. I remember it being very hot and we only stayed for the first motos because of it. Johnson and O'Mara in the 250 class were way better than everyone else. I remember Dymond on the Husky was flying and Brooks was riding an 86. Lechien was so far in front when they got to us and that was the last time we saw him. As we were walking out we walked past the pits and we see Bailey sitting on the back of the box van with Decoster and I don't recall who else. My dad asks David if he can come over and sign my autograph book and he kind of waves us off which I completely understood. Just as we were about to walk away Decoster grabs Bailey by the shoulder of his jersey and makes a motion like he's picking him up and throwing him towards us. Bailey kind of shuffles over to the fence, asks us if we enjoyed the first moto and were having a good day, thanked us for being fans and walked back to the truck. Made me an instant fan that day. Loved every minute I rode on that track when I had the chance.

Unrideable bikes. Horrible suspensions. "Blown out" track. We gotta respect those legends and what/how they rode! Nowadays, riders bitch because SX tracks aren't prepped good enough... smh

Yeah, riding those first gen unit rack 500's was probably more like the manhandling a Triumph days than the performance of todays bikes. The factories were really just beginning to work it out.

And boy, Carlsbad would bring the "best" out of that generation's bike.

I love how you couldnt just go WFO, had to have throttle control, also had shitty tire design and compaounds vs. now a days factored in. No factory ECU's changing timing etc, just like the moto GP riders of the 500cc 2 stroke days it was so dependent on the rider.

Anyone else get goose bumps watching this? I can't do anything but feel in awe when I watch some of these old motos. Brings back the hey day for me and it's right in the period of time where I would look for anything and everything moto. Look for anything on TV , check the local news stand for the new issue of Dirtbike. I'd record every single race that ever came onto TV. I STILL have all those motos on VCR tapes in my attic. Going back to the 82' Super bikers , which were freakin' nuts!

As far as Ronnie goes , I remember the first real time I saw him on TV. He was 16 years old , running #224 on a YZ 250 ( I think it was one he bought himself? ). I think it was the 83' San Diego SX. I knew right then...." Man , that kid is going to be something special ".

Funny story. You can see me taking a pic of Ronnie with my dad giving him the bird. A couple years ago I had pic blown up and sent it to Ronnie. He signed it and said “Thanks Doug for being #1 fan”. Framed and gave to my dad.
