I’m a long time 500 guy and 500AF owner, and even I am a little surprised at the hype and demand going on right now. I’m more interested in guy’s opinions that have ridden and or raced a 500 themselves.
What do you guys think?

3rd gear.

Demand is on the rise. Values have doubled in last 5 years. With many 20 year old 500's selling for $10,000+ KTM should just offer one and take that market. I'd buy one for sure.

It’s an out of production two stroke with the allure of being fast and dangerous. Prices will continue to climb.

They are redundant and useless, that's why everyone is in love, me included

i have one the hype is rediculous its a big turd and it aint no fuel injected 450, ill gladly take three times what its worth Photo

Everyone should ride one. Few should race one.

I bought my 2008 Service Honda CR500AF in 2011 for $5500. Didn't argue with the guy on the price, but it was sitting for awhile on CL. Looks pretty new in this old picture.

I got off the track at the Mammoth qualifier a few weeks ago and someone offered me $6000 before I took off my helmet, which I rejected and he asked what I'd sell it for. Which I just said "not ready at any price" - which probably wasn't smart but I was just off my moto.
Pretty hammered now, after muddy practice at HT

I'm slower on it that I was my CRF450 but It's more fun.

I really enjoyed a modified and more enduro like kx 500 and surprisingly it didn't have "too much power", or an uncontrolable power. Training, not racing. Everyone wants to ride it in 3rd gear, but they are also super fun if you ride it agressively, of course, not for 20 minutes though.

The value in france/europe is also high, but I don't see it climbing much further as the parts availability may become an issue soon. That is why I think the value should stay more or less stable from now on.

Hello..Vital?..

5/21/2021 8:27 AM

Values and demand are on the rise for everything because of the global supply shortage. It won't get any better for a while. CR500s? Yep. PW50s? Yep. RM-Z450s? Yes, even those. Tires, chains, sprockets, spark plugs? Yep. 1/4 and 1/2 ton pickups? Yep. RVs? Yep. Gas grills? Yep. Aluminum siding, drywall, lumber? Yep. Gasoline? Yep.

It may not occur to everyone yet, but this is what runaway inflation looks like. I was just barely old enough to see it happen when Jimmy Carter was president in the '70s.

Kaplans seems to find CR500 by the truckload. Always scoring another one.

Have an AF I built for Vet track use. A steel frame also for Vet track. Steel frame for desert. Sold a few spares I did resto on. Have one more for sale tempted to keep it for a bit. Ironic. “Buyer” wants to send it to France

Raced a 500 a few times, hated it.

The biggest reason for the new huge up tick is a new class in outlaw dirt track racing. Don’t know the name of the class, just know 2 friends sold 3 bikes to the same guy at more than asking price. He said he’s using the motors for a mini winged outlaw car that his son races.

From 91 until 2006 all I rode and raced was KX-500s. I loved them. I knew how to ride one. Always upshift, always be one or two gears too high. Third gear starts. Gear the bike up, not down. Ride smooth. Ridden properly the KX-500 is a great bike. And when you need and can use the power it's a blast.

Then in 2006 I bought a KTM-300. I sold my KX-500s. Never looked back. If I was a collector I'd still own one, but I have no desire to race one anymore. I have no regrets riding them all those years. My taste have changed, I've moved on.

It's cool to see the builds people are doing. Mike LaRoccos 94 MXDN bikes is on my dream bike list.

Too this day a KX-500 is still the fastest off-road bike I've ridden. The Husaberg 570 is close.

I had a 84 and, 92 CR 500. The 84 I picked up with a blown motor for $600 in 96. The 92 I got for $1400 with a new top and bottom end around 07. It’s baffling how the prices continue to climb for these bikes. Parts for most models are hard to find or, are non existent. I hated the 84. It had a light switch power band. I ended up trading it for a 88 CR 250.
The 92 was a good bike but, not for woods riding as I had recently moved to Washington state. I sold it for $1500 in 2013.
It’s a sellers market right now and prices will continue to climb. With the prices out of control, at this point, my next bike will be new. It’s not realistic paying 5-6K for a good condition 500 that parts continue becoming harder to source. I want to ride my bikes. Not ride in fear of breaking something that I won’t be able to find.

Motocross should never be easy. The 500 class will always be the pinnacle of the sport to me. Come on KTM. Make a 500 for the vets that loved them.

Only raced one my 500s in desert. It was fun. Could have made the bike better but was great as it was. Also got into 300s. Have two now. Love them. Ironic I have two Husaberg 570s. Got an FE450 first. Liked it so much. Got a 390 then finally found the two 570s. One I am rebuilding. Came with a snapped rod. Guy fell over in a river. Etc. Other 570 only has 7 hours. Guy must been scared of it. Showroom. Will use the beater 570 for desert. Have one brand new 04 KX500 been saving. Sell it someday. Comical the people who offer me 5k for it. Didn’t buy it to sell. At the time I just liked 500s so much wanted a spare for later.

Bought a used 1984 in 1985. $900. Raced all season. Replaced one fork seal. Sold for $800 at end of season. Yeah it was hard to start sometime and vibrated but man was it fun. Sold that and my 1985 125 for the 1986 CR250.

I had an '01 for a few years that had some port work, a PWK carb, pipe and silencer. It was fast and fun in a straight line, and really shined at the dunes. I was never comfortable enough on it for trail riding though. I sold it and then shortly after bought an '07 CRF450X which was absolutely perfect for me.

I'm glad I owned one and got to experience a big bore smoker, but nostalgia can be deadly sometimes. I'd much, much rather ride a modern 450 for pretty much anything.

I bet the OEM,s wish they still had tooling for the 500,s , the current prices could lift any company from bankruptcy!

One of my best days riding ever was on a built CR500 AF at glamis.

On dirt I ran a 185 main. However after 10 mins in the dunes I came back to camp and dropped the biggest main I had in the jet kit, a 205! 32/1 castor and a 205 and that bike ran wide open all day no problem with the slightest of spooge. 5th gear stand ups down sand highway, roosting the shit out of every quad at the place. Loved every second of it.

Demand is not on the rise, and you guys saying you would buy one are full of shit because I’ve had mine posted for over a month and sold it for cheap as fuck because nobody wanted to buy it. One of the cleanest K5s I have seen
