I️ know we talk about it every year.. but man it’s depleted.. bagget and roczen were in the top 10 before half way. Guess we should just get used to it??

Yup, Musquin and Tomac laped the field... Not too long ago you had a packed field, well, till 10th at least, a lot of battles and a lot of possible contenders. Better days will come. Watch the GP's.

It was crazy how fast they were overtaking lappers. The lappers never looked to intentionally hold them up but they came on them so fast a few never knew they were there.

Tough call for someone to make given that they've 'earnt' the right and are the fastest top 40 out there, but a bunch of them should've been black flagged in my book. Granted the pace Eli and Marv was pushing was insane, but when dudes mid-late moto are 25-40 seconds a lap slower, it gets a little silly; you expect that on the last lap when all is largely said and done but mid-late moto? Jeeze! Not only does it potentially ruin a battle royale at the front, it probably brings safety into question!

There's a huge difference between the top ten and the other thirty riders. It's definitely a depleted field this year. Hopefully next year AP, ZO, AC, JM and whomever decides to move up aids in the competition of these races. The injury list being twenty riders deep is insane, some ting aint right wit dat.

I guess for some that don’t feel the backmarkers belong there but do you want gates with less than 40 riders like the GP’s? I hope it never comes to that because it means it’s dying. Let the privateers take the purse money and leave the Factory or Factory Support riders earn there salaries.

It’s just what it is. Not as much money in the sport so not a lot of riders on good equipment with nice salaries and training facilities and best equipment money can buy and a team behind you. Then when a few of those get hurt you still have to fill the gates. It’s just a sign of the times there’s not as many big teams anymore. You can’t compete without being on a team with all that money and resources behind you.
There are guys from 20th to 40th place that if you put them in a factory team and gave them a year they would be top 10 guys.

There are a lot of injuries this year. Not much more to say.

Regarding the lappers and the battle at the front, this is the one downside when tracks get ripped deep and become super-rutted like High Point. The lappers are battling too, in the case yesterday many of them inside the top-20. High Point is narrow as well, so inevitably the lappers end up in the best lines and like Eli said post-race, it becomes a bit of a chess game. Not much can be done, although I think ripping the track just a bit less might be OK. It was a better track for the 2nd motos, the line options were more equal.

It really wouldnt bother me to have less than a 40 rider field. Of of the best things about watching the Herlings/Cairoli races is the lack of lappers clogging up the track.

Yes they belong BUT the level seems to have dropped the past couple of years.

Weird as you always here today’s 450’s are good out the box, they have too much power etc, so what is it that’s missing from the privateers????

Yep. I remember. It was James and RC that lapped the entire field if I remember correct. It’s been going on as long as sport been around.

Look at how many guys are on the lead lap in the 250 class. Lap times are damn close 250 vs 450. Swap the top 15 250 riders with the bottom 15 450 guys. Time to mix it up.

The class system is screwed, Hill goes from being a struggling 250 rider, to 4th in 450's... 250 riders are paid too much, and 450 riders are paid to little. Thats why guys you never heard of can run top 10 and be 6 seconds a lap off the pace.

Are Tomac and Musquin as fast as RC and James Stewart, though? They’re good but not legendary. I think the top 10 of the 250 class would beat the top 10 of the 450 class in a shootout right now.

that they cant move from class to class and the lack of a 3rd class is one aspect why...

as is obvious, some are better on smaller cc bikes.

nearly everyone agrees the 250 races are often much better races than the 450s.

the fact that 125 racing was killed off is a travesty to this sport is so far as rider development, close racing and as above, some riders being suited to a smaller size bike

organisers being in the pocket of oems is obvious and lame.

Yeah, it wouldn't bother me either! Quality over quantity! Make it a 30 rider gate, cut the wheat from the chaff.

Make the 250 class the premier money class since it costs so much to compete. Open it to 2 strokes and 4. Make the 125 and 450 classes a six round series and alternate them throughout the season. The premier class would stay healthier and the other two classes would provide affordable opportunities for the rest. And add Rupert’s orange flag.

One day were complaining about the lack of deprh, there next day we are telling the old guys they need to retire already. We can't win.

Is it possible that shorter tracks are leading to an increase in lapped riders? Would longer lap times decrease the number of lappers?

He's, apparently, got an ironclad - well as much as such a thing can be had - contract for 450s next year.

So, he's got nothing to prove / no reason the make an effort ( well, other than finishing bonuses, but he might have just signed for a shedload of money, and doesn't need / have bonuses to work for) . What's that Mitch Payton quote they run on Matthes' pod cast ........?

Doesn't try (incredibly hard) now in the 250s - does try hard when on the 450, that he's got a contract for. He appears to have worked it out really well for himself.

But, I recall a good amount of 'privateers' doing well in the 500 Nationals, years ago. I think, mainly when the 500s were a short series, but even when they had a decent amount of rounds. Big bikes, are a better bet / cheaper thing, for Privateers / small teams, than the little bikes, be it the 2t era, or the 4t Handicap class era.

The track was brutally rough, which separates the cream of the crop from the rest. Eli, Marvin and Roczen are on a different level in those conditions. The back markers are just trying to hit the rut and not kill themselves. If they want closer racing, make the track less technical, but that takes away from the fans seeing the top guys from displaying their true talent. The top guys are amazing the way they balance their way through the ruts at unbelievable speeds. Unfortunately it exposes the other riders weaknesses, even though they would destroy the best guys at most local and regional races.

I thought High Point was great, and have made a mental note to never ride there as that track would destroy a rider of my skill.

I dunno, everyone complains when Dungey spanked everyone, everyone complained with Carmichael did the same, and ET, etc etc etc...unless there is a perfect storm of uninjured talent then 1 rider is probably always going to dominate ....

you can bet your bottom dollar is say Barcia started winning every single race from now on then all the Barcia/Yamaha fans stop moaning about dominance, and then the ET/Kawasaki fans start moaning...no one will ever be happy

Comical is seeing a dude race all moto but get lapped 5 times at High Point. Comical is most between 30th-40th being anywhere from 30-60 seconds a lap slower mid-late moto than the leader. When you're that much slower, safety has to be a concern and if cutting the gate lessens that risk, in turn reduces the rolling roadblocks who get in the way of a potential battle with the front runners, I'm all for it!

Hasn't there always been a disparity like this? Somehow the backmarkers survived as did the faster guys.
