so basically im just curious about this, if someone was 16 years old but an AMA 15 could you still race a 450, because you have to be 16 to race a 450 but i’m not sure if they base that off of ama age or real age.

What's the best bike for a 16 year old and why is it a CR500?

If I was 15 when I was 16, I'd still have ridden a 125, which is a 250. Unless it was a 450. Then it would have been a 500. No matter what the AMA says.

Nope. When I was 15 we all started on an RM100. After a year on a bike with a downpipe and no reed valve anything was going to be easier to go fast on.

Tyler could have helped you with tuning up that RM100...

Do yourself a favor and ride a 125 until you're about 18.

I was pointing out that I didn't understand the OP's question. The first few times I read it, I did not grasp what "AMA 15" is. Now I think it means you were born after a qualifying date or something....

Sorry Cade, I was making fun at your expense.

AMA age is alot like dog-years, but different. Either way, you should definitely be on a 450. No two ways about it.

Yes, if you are 15 on January 1st you are AMA 15 all year even if you turn 16 one week later.

I raced an old ‘84 YZ490 when I was 17. Man that thing was a blast……..except if I remember right, there may have been a tad bit of vibration. I actually think my teeth are still rattling from that experience. But it sure as hell was worth it.

When i was 15 I had a CR80 and a ATC 250R. What a combo!!!!
A 450 is a lot of bike for a 15/16 year old to hang on too for 30 plus 2.

Dafuq are you talking about dude?

The only thing I can think of.....if you are 15 years old during the time of LL qualifiers, but will then turn 16 by the time LL starts, are you eligible to ride a 450?

The age of a rider on Jan 1st only applies to Youth classes. For all Amateur classes (A, B, and C, Vet etc.) your age is day of the event for AMA events.

You don't need to be 16 to race a 450. That's not a thing. At the top level of amateur racing barely teenage kids have raced both big bikes. It was a totally normal thing for a 14 year old to race the 125 and 250A/B classes on 2-strokes on the 90s just like it's common for kids to race 250 and 450 now. I'm always blown away by people talking about how some pro will "adjust" to racing a 450. There's almost a 100% chance that kid has raced 450s for a couple years before turning pro.

If the question is can a kid jump straight into the 450 class when turning pro at 16, yes, they can. Plenty of teenage kids have made their debut on a 450 outdoors.

Man it depends on how hard you're training. Are you curling for girls?

all jokes aside I started on 450's at 16. Never liked 250's in late 2000's.

It was very common for kids to race 250s and 450s at the same time we raced Jeremy Martin at Loretta Lynn's in 2011 on a 450 and yes my son was 16 LOL
