3 speed transmission

Edited Date/Time 12/6/2013 5:22pm
Read in the new MXA interview of Dean Ferris that his MXDN YZ250F used a 3 speed gearbox, "which was likely the biggest difference from any other bike."
Interesting...I have heard of 4 speed transmissions on 450F's, hadnt heard of 3 speed on 250F before.

Saw on Twitter that someone said it did 16500 rpm and made over 50 hp, and weighs 95 kg. That is nuts!

Over 50hp sounds pretty serious....but cosworth can certainly build a motor

Michael Leib rode that bike to 2nd overall at the 2012 Italian GP. He liked it but said while it reved to the moon it lacked bottom end. Big advantage on the start not to have to shift.

that might explain Deans epic holeshots against 450's at the MXDN

I don't see why more MX bikes don't come with 3 or 4 speed gearboxes. What gears do you guys use on the tracks? I use 2nd, 3rd, and 4th every other day. 1st gets me back to the truck, 5th is for drag racing Harley's for pink slips. (If you don't get that reference I Naminate you for noob of the year)

I use fifth quite a bit at some tracks. I would hate to have mx bikes come with three speed transmissions because I use my bikes for trails and mx depending on what I feel like doing. I just don't think a three speed would work to well for offroad. However, I can definitely see how it could work really well for a factory rider who can wind his bike to the moon and not worry about having to fix it if it breaks, definitely an interesting concept to think about.

Oh ya, and I got the reference! haha

I think the VOR came with a 3 speed box at one stage, but it was a big bore.

I only have to use 2nd or 3rd on most tracks. But most tracks aren't that great...

Yes, I could see it lacked bottom end power, didn't he fade to last in each moto LOL

I think Ferry once had a 3-speed YZF426.

I like to see Pourcel get that engine for the Nat´s, 3-speed or not, 50 hp is serious power.

Thanks for setting the record straight Grizz, yes go got second overall straight out of SX. In fact he had a 25 second lead in Moto 2 with 6 minutes left. Ebstein Barr cut the rest of the season in 2012 short for him.

whats the advantage to no having a 4th or 5th gear? two gears (counter and main) cant weigh that much... i know that one cam and a lot less cam chain can save some weight, but two gears?

I'd love to have a 3 speed transmission for the CR500.

They build engines, motors plug into the wall.

They built it that way to get rid of rotational mass of course ,if the fim requires the gears to be in the cases then a unusable plastic gear will be inserted to please the rule but save weight.

If no rules apply then spacers are use in place of gear.

I believe DOUG HENRY 400 was full of unused gears since it fell under the one year works bike.

Then why are they called motorcycles?

How about "motorsports"?

"Motor vehicle?"

We need to write to Honda and let them know that they named their company wrong..."Honda Motor Company, Ltd"

Yamaha too..."Yamaha Motor Corportation"

This has been around the GPs for a while. Joel Smets had a 3 geared KTM SX 520 in 2000.

The less you have to shift the faster your lap times can be. There's was a cool video of H&H testing at Glen Helen I think where they ask Broc Tickle to show all the times he shifts on the track map just so they can change his gearing to where he can shift less times each lap.

My '03 yz450 only needed 2nd for the starts and 3rd on most tracks, sometimes 4th at Hangtown on the long up hills. Best motor of any bike I ever rode.

I had a KTM a couple of years ago that had a 4-speed tranny. I never got the feel for it, the 1st gear was too tall and second was too short compared to the third gear. I would take the 5-speed gearbox on any day given. (Or a 6-speed gearbox if we are talking aobut 125's.) I also used to do a decent amount of trail riding and it always felt like the 5th gear was missing (which it obviously was lol).

However, I have to admit that a 50hp 250f with a 3-speed gearbox is pretty rad. 16500RPM and 95kg is NUTS. Woohoo

No, I ride a YZ125. I like the fact that I have to work hard to make it go fast. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's part of the fun.

I rode a yz125 last weekend for the first time in 2 years. The bike was SO much fun, but man I was shifting like crazy compared to my yz250Blink It was a 2000 yz125 btw and that thing was pretty quick but my 2006 yz250 made it feel like a pitbike

I'm working on taking 6th out of a 76 CR125 Honda engine. Making it a lightweight. Considering I went with a PVL ignition (and save over a pound from the stocker), it should be a breeze to start. So easy, I may even go the road race route and remove the complete kickstart assembly and save another 4-5 pounds. Besides, how hard could it be to push start a sub 160 pound bike???Smile

Just read a test review from Dave Willet at moto mag, he has tested factory ktms for the last 4years and reckons Herlings bike has got nothing for the bike it cosworth yam of dean ferris in a straight line.
The 3 speed was designed to get the best out of the 50bhp 95kg( which is as light as the fim will allow , but could be lighter according to steve dixon, and7 kg lighter than the factory ktm 250f).
There is also apparently no drag when chopping the throttle, just like a 2stroke.
Still runs a carb and revs to 16500rpm
I think Dean might miss the bike!
As for 3 gears, 1 is all that is needed to beat Mike Alessi at Glen Helen, well for Cairoli anyway!! Sorry he never ceases to suprise me
