The brakes do much more than just slowing the bike down. Click this link and watch this short video on what you should be doing with the rear brake on every corner.

Mr Semics can you elaborate on trail braking at the exit of choppy hard packed corners to help the rear stay under the bike and not shudder to the outside of the corner.

I'm an 50yr old fart that has used this technique for years.

It also helps to keep the rear from unloading in those instances...

Thanks.

KMC I don't agree with the trail braking techniques you're referring to. Once you go through the transition (where you go from braking to accelerating) you should be off the brakes. Your braking foot should be back to weighting the foot peg. Your control should be coming from the clutch, throttle and body positioning and movements.

The only place that I know of for dragging the rear brake under power is in big braking bumps. Even in this situation it's lightly on the throttle and rear brake.

I hope this makes sense and works for you. If it doesn't you're bike's set up probably needs adjusted.

I have a a really bad habit if dragging my rear brake pretty much thru the whole corner when turning left. No matter what level I have the pedal it's still I habit I just can't shake, so obviously with that my right turns are much more flowing and faster, very frustrating.

Don't believe you can't break that bad habit. You have to think about how you're going to do it right not why you can't do it right. Try setting up an oval or a part of a track like an oval. Slow way down at first and just focus your attention on letting off the rear brake at the transition. I'm sure as long as you slow down and keep thinking about it you'll be able to do it. Repeat enough times and eventually the new program will become automatic.

I always feel goofy in left turns when my right foot is off the peg but still using the brake, but that video cleared up what's actually going on and why it's okay. Thanks for posting GS!

What about when you turn right?
The Braking techniques are the same for right corners. Instead of letting off the rear brake and putting your foot back on the foot peg you put your foot out for the corner. Geeze, I thought you'd know that.

wow...great find man. It's amazing just how fast those dudes went on poorly suspended bikes. Shoot...if today's riders rear ends were hopping around like that, they would pull into the mechanics area...lol

Gary I began riding at 12 and racing at 14. I put my son on a PW when he was 4 but he stopped riding for a long time and now is back on the bike at 12. What dvd do you recommend for him to start out? He loves watching videos, is your volume 1 dvd 1 still the go to for starters?
