Just kind of interested to see if anyone has had any opportunity to ride both machines? I was just thinking since most people say it's more like a 250f wouldn't the 250sx be a better choice to race on the professional level because of it's nimbleness/ power combination?

Makes sense, but I think it's sorta like Fight Club...

Can't talk about it.

The 350SX-F is still close to 450 HP and has all kinds of traction. The 250 2 stroke is a lot more twitchy and has a ton of wheel spin compared to the 4-strokes. The 350 is like the 2 stoke as it likes to be rev'd and ran at high RPM. You can lug it a little like a 450 too. Its is a great bike for vet riders or the weekend warrior who the 450 can get away from a little as well as really good for the A level riders who are 250F guys that are a little small on the 450. It alllows the rider to not let off inm certain situations which around the track is faster. My brother, Jarett Pesci races KTM's for a local dealer and adn has tested all of the models and was faster on the 350 than the 450 and 250 2 stroke as well as being faster on the 250SX-F than the 2 stroke. The 350 allows a lot stonger starts as it launches out of the gate and tracks unlike the 450 that wanted to dig in the soft, wheel spin in the hard and wheelie when he really got on it.

His 2010 250SX-F is for sale too:

hard to compare laptimes switching back and forth 2-st/4-st.......it takes a bit to learn how to ride a 2-st effectively especially coming off a year + riding 4's.........let him get used to it for a month or so and then see

For the 100th time, 450 four strokes rev FAR higher than 250 two strokes. The whole wheelspin thing is a moot point when you are spinning a 450 single at 12,000 rpm. 450s are not tractors. The do get good traction down low, but if you want to make power and go fast you have to rev them. If the new generation four strokes weren't capable of high rpms, they wouldn't make any more power than the old four strokes.

Rode both on the same day during a KTM ride day a few months ago. Granted the 350 was thrashed, and later in the day actually broke. The 150 would also explode before I got a chance to ride it. The 250sx was good though, compared to my project CR250 it's a much more refined bike. It turned well and had a strong hit that I forgot a good 2-stroke had. Given the choice both over cost and ridability I'd go with the 250. Once again the 350 I rode was clapped out but it felt heavy, and not near as powerful as my 450. The linkage didn't do anything noticeable for me either.

Overall though I'm still not sold on KTM as a brand. I know all these bikes were ride-day machines no one cares about but they were still 2011 models and all in semi-sad shape. The 150 grenaded before noon, the 350 later on. And I've had a few friends who suffered problems on their own new KTMs that make me pretty gun-shy on dropping coin for a new bike.

Not sure what this was directed to since it wasnt quoted, but as far as Jarett goes on his, he came off of riding a 125 2stroke and had a 250 2stroke as well. The 250 2 stroke was an advantage on a couple tracks that were a little more wide open, but normally the 250F was better and faster laptimes. He is a rider who puts in a lot of time on a bike and a lot of work to go fast. Lots of testing everyyear before he makes his bike choices.

I've only owned one 4t which was a 250f and it was an absolute terd in almost every aspect. Although, it did handle very well likely because it was slow and tame as an abused dog.

Anyways, back to the comparison at hand. It just flat out seems to me that both bikes are on the same plane...faster then a 250f and not as heavy as a 450f (250sx weight less then both bikes) with slightly less power.

A 250F feels slow to me. The illusion is you are going fast, because you are revving the ring out of it. I like the way a 2 stroke revs freely and have real grunt down low.

BTW, I am 47, and have ridden 500 2 strokes since i was 16.

I think for a really good rider, What the 450 makes up in the straits with power then 250F gains it right back in the corners. It really all depends on the track. If the track is a 4th gear highway, yes the 450 will always come out on top. Jarett qualified for Loretta's, got 2nd in the Main at the Daytona AM. SX in 450B and won the Baja Brawl in Fourstoke and 450B all on a 2010 KTM 250SX-F.

I ride a 2010 Honda 250f... i rode a KTM 350 at our local track on long island which is pretty fast... really wasnt impressed with the 350 motor I expected more (maybe too high expectations). The owner of the KTM350 also has a 2011 KTM250sx which I also rode, after riding fourstrokes for most of the decade I was surprised to like this better than the 350. Although the KTM250sx lacks some of the torque of a 450 on a highspeed track it wouldnt be much of disadvantage.

On a track like Baja I think that any bike (250F and up) would be capable of winning in any class. Based on how rough that track gets you can only go so fast though whoop'd out sections as big as your house! Yet I still enjoy it.

I think it depends on how much money you have. If you have the money, then get the 350 (Even though I think its too heavy. It should be a whole lot lighter than the 450. I thought this was the reason they made it). Of course, the 250sx can be tuned to run however you want it to - silencer, flywheel weight, etc. for a whole lot cheaper. I would get the 150. If it wasn't available, I would get the 250sx, and then the xr200.

lol...very true! i actually think the 2 stroke had a little advantage there. Daniel Herrlien and Austin Coon were flying on theirs.

I wonder what's up with the 150? Shouldn't have blown up at all. Would definitely be a question for a KTM rep. I still want one though. Of course if Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, or Suzuki made a 150 2-stroke I would be all over it.

It certainly wasn't from being ridden hard on that particular day. Of roughly 50 people sharing 8 bikes (a 150, 2 250s, 250F, 2 350s, 2 450s) only 3 of us were either A or vet A MX riders putting them through some strain. It was mostly cross country guys actually. The 150 was the newest looking bike there, so it surprised me. But it was definitely seized and not from a lack of fluids.

I was glad to get the chance to try them, I had never ridden a KTM and hadn't even ridden another brand in years. The 250sx was nice, if I had to choose between that or a new YZ I'd pick the KTM. But their 4-strokes feel bulky, clunky, I wasn't impressed at all.

I thought all 4 strokes felt that way. Wink
