My son runs his 250f in the 450 class locally. He doesn't have fun riding the 450. So, he gives up hp for fun.

Yep. I had a blast on my 250f and I weigh 210. Everyone said I was too big and they were right in a way but I still managed to get 3rd place at 32 years old in a 250c class against 15-21 year old kids and there were about 22 riders. Sure it was a C class but still a fast class and my old ass was hauling on my 250f. Problem is there are a few jumps at some tracks where it's tough to clear on a 250f but 450 no problem.

In fact I actually wanted more competition when I was racing. That was 8 years ago. I am 40 now but there were no freaking riders in the 450c class like maybe 5. The 250c class is always the biggest class at local races besides the kids class so I wanted actual competition and a big reason I bought a 250f and there just a blast to ride also and I was faster on it then on my 250 2 stroke(well 265 actually) at the time.

Nice. My son is 28 years old and rides in the pro class. He wins his share in the 250 class, but not the 450. So, it seems logical that on the local level the 450 is helpful. But again, its all about fun for us.

i currently race local 250 pro and open pro on a 250F
ive raced and ridden 450s and they are just too fast for my liking (im only 170lb so that doesnt help)

even 250 2 strokes are a handful IMO id much rather wring out a 250F than try to hold onto a 450

From what I've reviewed of moto times the last three years of the pro MX Nationals the 250f's at many races can equal or better the time of the 450's over the length of the moto (total moto time). I believe if any factory would let their sponsored riders run one in the 450 class we'd see them on the podium often. But it will never happen we'll only get to see them race together at the MXdN. Wouldn't think many amateurs or privateer pros would want the expense of contesting one for a season.

I think for 450 class in AMA pro MX the lowest allowed displacement is 251cc but your allowed to bore an engine up to the displacement limit. Not sure that you couldn't bore a 250 slightly oversize and get it legal per the way the rules are written.

Yeah I raced a race against 450's on a 250. I had never won against the riders there that day and won both classes. I was stoked as I moved to the area to race the faster guys. Anyway yeah I got DQ'D at trophy time. "Oh yeah some people complained you don't get your 1st place". I never won on a sand track ever again Tongue

That was no different in the 125/250/500 days... Ask Dave Thorpe what it was like to have OMara pass him on a 125 at the Des Nations.

I am still not sure why this always seems to mistily everyone, the smaller the motorcycle the more momentum you keep up around the corners which equals or betters most larger motorcycles.

I know there were guys that could perform well on 125's or 250's and could not adjust to the 500's so they stayed on the smaller bikes. Seems like today guys are moving up to the 450's despite that as a machine they may be less capable than the 250's. I suppose SX advancement rules created this situation. Guys are forced up to the 450's in SX (where the money in the sport is at) and they just stay on the same machine through the MX Nationals. I'd rather see them race whatever they feel most effective on for the track there at; an open class in SX and MX.

I normally try to sign in as late as possible so I can jump into whatever class has the most people signed up. I run a 250F and it is no disadvantage in HS. It does fall flat on the longer staights but more than makes up the difference in the woods or tight stuff. I'd still trade it in a micro second for a 300 2T.

I'm 27. I can ride smaller bore bikes faster and longer. 450's just murder my arms and all around stamina....

Not surprising that 250F's are winning 450 classes. 95% Rider.

I do the same thing plowboy does. I like to sign up late based on rider turnout. Who the hell wants to race 3 people? I try to get in on the largest gates possible.

Dave Jones, an ohio Vet rider won Loretta's in Vet 30 B/C on a 2004 KX125, three years ago. He qualified on a KX250t. And chose to race his 125 because he could perform better over long distances on it. And it bought him a national championship! Pretty cool for Davey!

250f is just so fun to ride. It's like you get to ride the actual track rather than the bike. Your always fighting the bike on a 450 and dealing with arm pump. You can see the aggression on 250f riders they just look like they are going so much faster even though they are not but they are riding higher gears and have it wrapped out almost all the time where 450 is just smooth and steady.

They both have there advantages. I love my 450 also but the 250f I feel like I can actually have fun and ride the track more than the bike.

A 250f should would have a big disadvantage on the start though. You can definitely ride a little more mellow and smooth on a 450 because of the power where with a 250f your adrenaline is going the whole time because your just wrapping that fucker out.

In 03 I was trying to make the vegas amateur AX finals in Vegas. I was riding an 02 250F Yamaha in the 450 class. I raced Topeka, Kansas City, Ft worth, and Guthrie with no issues. I drive all the way to Denver for the final race in our region only to get disqualified.
