Um we're talking about a carbureted 250 2 stroke here? Have you tried making any adjustments to the carb?

Adjust the idle and the air screw first before even considering taking it back to a dealer.

I tried that made no difference.bike won't run and kicks hard! I had knee surgery in March so I am not going to keep kicking it over for something to do.let the dealer figure it out bike has a 30 day warranty

It sure sounds like he has limited knowledge about carb turning and adjustment so with that said he should consider running it down to the local mechanic where he can watch and learn.

Yea I am not a carb expert by any means. I started the bike in the showroom with choke on fired right up first kick easy.shut it off right away took bike home would not idle. Rode it around for an hour wasn't impressed.
Bike would quit as soon as I let of the gas.that's why I am asking questions just trying to learn

I've always set up my 2 strokes so they will barely idle, but keep idling. Sometimes the thing will load up and die after a minute or if the atmospheric conditions are strange that day, but I don't believe in the 10-second rule.

In my opinion a 2 stroke shouldn't idle at all with the choke off. That is how I have always ran mine. Keeps a sharper throttle response.

Two strokes are inefficient at idle, therefore I always set them to idle about 3-5 second and die. This helps keep the idle circuit rich for good throttle response.

Tom Morgan recommended this as well, good to have him confirm this on my latest engine.

+ 1000

When did idling become a thing. Motocross bikes never used to have any idle set.

I’d like to be in control of whether power is being applied, not my bike.

As others have said, when properly jetted for RIDING it should die after about 3-5 seconds. If you don’t like that ... turn up the IDLE screw and for the love of god Read your owners manual!

They usually idle better if you reach back and put your hand in front of the silencer and blip the throttle a few times. Some guys even like to go wide open for a second. That's why you see so many guys doing this on the line. Then it should idle nicely so you can put your goggles on and quickly shake your head side to side a few times before the gate drops.

your sequencing is wrong. it's:

1) hand behind silencer to create increase in back pressure, blip (2x)
2) shake head, left to right, (3x)
3) check fuel petcock (1x)
2) repeat 2
4) check fuel petcock (1x)
5) holeshot

+1 for checking the fuel petcock like 25 times before a start.

Only took one OTB and broken radius/ulna to drill that one in my head lmao

I'm from a different era, but we would set up to idle for about 10-15 seconds... It was just a super low RPM idle, barely enough to sort of keep it alive. Then a blip would give you another 10 sec or so...

My 250sx idles, your idle speed adjustment is too low. Bring it to the dealer like you said if you aren't comfortable turning it yourself.
6/17/2019 9:22am
You should remove your pilot jet and make sure it is clear. A bike with a clogged pilot will usually idle with the choke on and die as soon as the choke is turned off. The bike may have sat at the dealer with gas in the carb for a little to long. Also check to see if your air screw is properly set - 1.5 turns out is a good starting point.

Anyone else ever started a bike on the showroom floor like the OP? Maybe they do it differently there, but here if you buy a bike off the floor the first thing they do is take it to the shop and check it over, fill it with break-in fuel, start it and run it and generally check things over.

I think they even oil the filter here in FL/GA.

I've had a YZ for years with the same Keihin carb the OP has. The idle screw works if you turn it. As BVM noted, read your manual.

Sounds like the pilot jet might be clogged if it won't run at low speed without the choke on.

Listen to what you are being told and make very small adjustments till your happy. It’s not a new bike so I would clean carb, check jets are clear 1st

My first race ever, I left the petcock turned off. Died on the start straight. Guess how many times I check the fuel before every start now? Numbers can't describe it.Woohoo

A racing 2 stroke should never be set up to idle, IMO. I never have set one up to do so and never will.

Hmm, I have been riding, racing and jetting 2 strokes for 20 years. I guess I have been doing it wrong?

Why wouldn’t I want a machine that idles nicely?

If the carb is tuned properly it should idle without to much sputtering and shaking at a nice low constant RPM.

I don’t want my bike dying if I come in too hot in a corner and grabbing all kinds of brake and clutch to get stopped.

I don’t want a stalled bike costing me positions in a race.

I don’t want to kick the fugger anymore than I have to.

Does a bike that dies idling rough and gnarly shaking the hell out of the levers mean it’s a race bike? Means it hauls ass?
