250 rider on 450

So, my son is a 250 rider and rides 10-15 hrs per week. With maintenance so high on the 250, I was thinking of buying him a 450 to train on 2 day out of the week. Anyone out there doing this? wanting to know if riding the 450 for 2 of his 4 days of training would hurt his speed on the 250.

Same boat here, trying to get mine to ride the new yamaha and honda before he decides. He wants the KTM. I agree it makes perfect sense if he can handle the bike!

A riding partner does much the same.

Pros: 450 teaches you throttle control, being smooth and not letting the bike beat you to death. The extra mass/inertia also requires more conditioning and patience to ride at full speed. Riding the 250 will feel lighter and less taxing.

Cons: you can certainly bomb through things like ruts, soft sections and rough patches a lot easier, which means you may not always seek out the smoother line. Also think people change their cornering style, not worrying about momentum but instead just bombing the berm. 250s, IMO, is about keeping the motor in the sweet spot, and not trying to slow down as much but look for creative lines and keep the momentum up.

Many pro-250 riders are doing the same as well.
