BTW, I apologise for the standard clutch cover, I am still waiting on a long back order from PC, and Hinson do not make clutch covers anymore.....

truth. cant get the ktms to turn myself. seems like they hit the steering stop to soon. and then when it gets bumpy hang on cuz its gonna swap lol.
Remove the stops then fix the geometry and suspension= Turns perfect and stays stable

if you are bargain hunting, get the newest RM250 you can get. its the pinnacle of japanese two stroke development. as good as they ever got. the 12 yamaha is an 06 BNG bike, but whats worse, is that the 06, is just an 01 with an aluminum frame.
Bingo, this pretty much covers it.

GYTR Clutch Cover! Your bike is bad ass. I would love to get a carbon fiber ignition cover for my YZ 250.

KTM w/ 300 top end
Do you have this setup or know someone who does? I'm on the list to get a 2013 250SX and would like input from people who have added the 300 top end as I used to enjoy riding the older big bores and I'm a big guy. I know the KTMs have variable power delivery options but would like to hear any input on this before plucking down the additional $895 to find out for myself. Thanks.

YZ250. The advantage of the KTM is power and the advantage of the Yamaha is suspension. It's easier and cheaper to improve power (if you really think you need it) than it is to fix suspension.

My son has a 2004 CR250. Is it possible to make that RC engine just as good if not better than the YZ or KTM?

Yes, but their is no point. Unless your son races expert, the bike makes more power than he can handle. You would be far better off just saving your money and making sure the suspension is dialed and set up for him. I see riders all the time, especially in the slower classes, throw money at their engines thinking more horsepower will win the race, it doesn't work that way with motocross. It is 85% rider and 15% machine, as long as your on a newer style bike that has been maintained.

And a quote to leave with you. "Beginners worry about horsepower and drag races, experts work on suspension settings and going fast in the corners."

In his son's defense even though I don't know what he has in mind the 02-07 CR250 is a very quirky motor with a violent mid-range hit. There are a lot of tricks to not so much gain power as just to smooth it out and make it far more rideable.

Agree totally, nothing wrong with trying to smooth out the power curve.

Not only power matters but also the powerband, suspension is key but powerband needs to be setup correctly to the riders needs aswell.

Ya He wasn't looking for more power. He would just like to be able to hang with them easier. His suspension does suit him well already.. The suspension shop is a local shop HyGear Suspension. The suspension was done b4 we bought the bike. He seems to like the way it works. He would just like a little more low end. Thanks for your input.

The easiest way to build low end is mill .030" off the base of the cylinder, then mill the head's squish band as required to end up with .050" of squish.

So everyone told me that Eric Gore is the man for the job. But, will he tell me if the cylinder I send him should be replaced? Or can he pretty much work with anything. I really don't want to send him a cylinder twice.

Eric is the "man". Call and speak with him rather than rely on Vital opinions. Since you are looking for Vital opinions, I don't know ANYONE that will say anything negative about Eric...

I had an '04. Really didn't like the motor. Roll it on....nothing, nothing, everything! Very hard kick to the mid-range. Boyesen Reeds and an FMF fatty pipe made it better, but still nothing like a YZ250. If you're always on the pipe (really fast) you won't notice as much I suppose.

Just rode my '06 YZ250 today. I bought it new in March of '06 and it's been running strong the whole time (with a few top ends, of course. )

I love that bike, but if I were to buy a new 250, I might be looking at an orange one. I want to reward the companies who are developing new machines. If the YZ ever changes, though.....
