2023 KTM 300 SX vs XC Price difference

Edited Date/Time 5/13/2022 5:22am
Why is the XC $1900 more?? differences I can spot are rear wheel, gas tank, XC Has hand guards, XC has 6 speed Transmission, XC has skid plate, XC Has Kickstand.

Price Breakdown (2022 OEM Price)

19" Wheel - $680
18" Wheel - $609

SX Tank - $116
XC Tank - $150

Hand Guards - $41

6th Gear - $150 ish

Skid Plate - $150??

Kickstand - $160

So it looks like the XC has about $465 more (retail price) in parts. I don't get it. What am I missing?

I think your 6th gear is a bit undervalued but you have a fair point none the less

Dirt bike pricing is just about demographics, and what the manufacturers think the market can bear.

Why does a 450f cost more than a 250f? Production costs would be basically the same between the two.

I think off-road/enduro models always get a bigger mark up from Ktm, because they know they don’t have to compete with Japan in the enduro sector, by and large.

Mx market is more competitive so they can’t get away with higher prices to the same degree.

where did you see it? the only place I've seen anything about the transmission is on the actual KTM Website. none of the press releases say it has a 5 speed. Which makes me believe it's still 6 because why wouldn't they talk about another "All-New" thing about the bike?

Also This makes me believe its 6 speed. I also checked the 2022 Fiche and the 6th gears are different part numbers.

Man, I hope you’re right. I’d already accepted the 5 speed, but I’d rather have a 6th gear. Cool

right I saw that. I think they just copied everything from the SX page. I believe the fiche over that page haha none of the press releases mention anything about it

Glad you brought this up…had the same thought today. I have a 21 300XC and 11,049 msrp plus 500 in freight, will be a 13k dirtbike. Seems like buying the 300sx and doing your own upgrades will be more cost effective.

The two pages are different, but hopefully you are correct about the 6 speed

Everything I am seeing says xc is a 5 speed, and, as mentioned above, essentially the same bike as the sx, but with the woods goodies. Glad I bought the 22 now as I was considering waiting for a 23. For me the 300TPI is plenty of power, even coming from a 350. And, I love my 6th gear!

This is me assuming that the sx and xc went TBI to get back the 2 stroke hit? Anyone know more about why they went to TBI for these models? Will the W's get TBI in 24, or stay TPI?

It is all what the market will bear. The 125xc is only $300 more than the 125sx and it gets nearly the same changes as the 250 and 300. I think the four stroke xc bikes are about $500 more than the mx versions and they get the same changes as the 250/300. I am glad to see skid plates are nearly standard now. I am curious if the skid plate tabs will be included on the sx frames.

The 300sx has me looking seriously at a new bike and I’ve never owned one new in my life before.

Can’t imagine why you’d buy an xc any more, there are always people selling their XC take off tanks and the 18 vs 19 wheel size is completely negligible for 98% of trail riders. Kickstands are nice but I haven’t had one in 8 years and I’m not clamoring for it.

I'd buy an XC because I don't ride tracks. Ever. Have you ever asked your dealer what the best selling bike is? It's a 300XC. And I'm almost positive its not being mostly sold to guys that ride tracks and swap tanks and rear wheels. Buying a 250SX and a 300SX big bore kit is cheaper than a 300XC and swapping parts.

Not sure how much trail riding you do, but riding a MX bike isn’t ideal. The two disciplines require totally different suspension set ups to be ridden to their potential. Soft settings at the track is dangerous and stiff (MX) settings will deflect and wear you out on the OffRoad riding and can also be dangerous.
Not that either bike can’t be set up for desired terrain, but I’d rather buy the bike designed for the riding I intend to ride with it.

5-speed, versus 6-speed is another thing to be considered as well.

Of course this is my opinion and if I could only afford to own one bike for both I’d have to decide which one to buy. I’d lean towards the SX and suffer a bit with stiff suspension.

I've exclusively ridden MX bikes for the past 20 years offroad. It's not that bad...its not like chopping street bikes down to make scramblers. I would go SX all the way. About the only thing I have started to consider is a kickstand after all these years, but again, not a big deal.

To me, the deal breaker is the EFI and no kicker. I'm not down with with that yet. A 2022 250SX is the bike I would purchase today.

Once you go kickstand...you never go back. Especially since the KTM ones tuck away so nice and have the rubber strap to keep them in place over jumps.

If you haven’t had a properly set up OffRoad bike, then you really don’t know what you’re missing.
There’s a pretty significant difference between them. No way I’m riding my Mx bike on the OffRoad trails I ride. But to each their own, I’m glad I’m able to have both.

To my benefit, I'm 225lbs so suspension usually isn't too stiff for me. I also ride a bunch of different stuff. Do a 2 hour hare scramble on a stock 86 ATC250R and then complain about MX vs. Offroad set ups Smile

I am not sure any oem suspension will qualify for that. You could get a pretty good off-road revalve on that sx bike for far less than $1800.

No doubt the SX300 can be set up for OffRoad.
That really wasn’t the point I was trying to make.
If you’re going to purchase only one bike and ride it just OffRoad, then you can make any bike trail worthy. I don’t really base my decision on $1800.
But when KTM has specific bikes, for certain terrain, I’m going to start there. But I’m a little spoiled with being able to have a specific bike for moto and another one for single track/ technical riding.

I’d rather have a 6-speed transmission for my OffRoad ventures and likewise with a 5-speed for moto. Opinions may differ….

Yeah, you got me there. It’s been 45 years since I rode an ATC, I don’t miss them. Sounds like you aren’t to picky on your suspension. But if you had a good tuner set up your bike, you’d wonder why you didn’t do it earlier.

If you are using 6th gear enough to need it then yeah you don't really have a choice. On the other hand if you are using 6th gear a lot on anything except paved roads, KTM XC suspension is way too soft.

Mx bikes for off-road for me too and just about everyone else in the faster classes at the races. Other then a 18” rear you have to add the same stuff to the off-road models that you do to a mx bike for real off-road, makes sense to start with a cheaper bike and close ratio trans.

Come on this is the most over-dramatic comment I’ve ever seen lol. I’ve literally ridden every second of off-road on an MX bike and don’t feel the need for the XC or XCW lines.

Off Road suspension is perfectly safe to ride on Moto, you’re not gonna die because the springs are too soft, it’s just less than ideal
