Just like everyone here, I'm a big kid getting ready to fully commit to an impulsive, yet satisfying decision. I was, and still am obsessed with the freedom that comes from riding, no cell phones, no computer screens, no text messages, just physical abuse, and pure adrenaline. I rode around the family farm growing up, and in my teen years was a district 14 AMA local 250C class hero. By hero I mean finishing mid pack with my fair share of DNF, and DNS in the mix, as I was funding my own journey. After riding a while, I did actually get a sponsor, and I turned in my old 1999 KX 250 for a brand new GAS GAS 250, that I raced for a company, and was maintained by them. One day at Dutch Sport park, MI, I had the unfortunate situation of landing short / casing the big one, and was on the balls of my feed, and felt the snap as my tibia broke. good news I never crashed, but calmly rod to the pits, and off to the ER. after that, marriage, mortgage, and you get the rest....

NOW, Father of a 10 year old boy, who is very much into riding, I am upgrading him to a YZ 65 or KTM 65, and am using this as the best excuse ever to have a grand return to riding. The plan that I am fully committing to now as a responsible adult (sometimes) with the proper level of disposable income to sink into this, is to regain a membership at my local motocross / hair scramble track, spend this summer with regular practice and conditioning, with a return to competition in 2020.

when I raced I was 240 LBS with all gear, but am now 260 LBS dry..... I know very well the importance of proper suspension setup, so that is not the point, the point is the bike / motor. I see a lot of forums with people saying "Dont get a 450" . I never raced a thumper, so I cannot say on way or another,

HERE is the point and sorry for the long post. I fully intent to race the 30+ class this year or next, and the bikes I am stuck between are the 2019 KTM 450 SX or the 2019 KTM 300 XC TPI. Looking for opinions / experience from other guys with similar situations.

You don't stop riding because you get old and fat, you get old and fat because you stop riding.

Ether one of those bikes will get you around but I'd say the 450 is gunna suit your weight better. Any 450 will be really. Sit on them and see which one feels most comfortable.

If you’re going to moto, that’s what the 450 is built to do.

Thanks for the quick answers. Validation of my choice to go 450 is good. Regarding the maintenance KTM 450 how often do you expect to freshen up the top end, I used to re-ring the 2 stroke every 8-10 hours.

As someone of the same girth, I can tell you that you're absolutely *not* pigeonholed into a 450. It's always lighter people and people that don't have the firsthand experience that think you're too big for anything else. Get whatever sounds most fun, because any 250/350/450 will pull you around just fine. Just think of it in terms of grunt versus rev and which you want to do more of and if you're not sure, try the one in the middle.

As a midpack C rider, you should be putting at *least* 100 hours on a top end on a 450.

Thanks Byke, any feedback regarding the air fork? I’m seeing mixed reviews and I think KTM is the only holdout. Grunt vs Rev, I’m leaning toward the KTM 450 with reviews of smooth low end power delivery. In the old days, a huge hit down low was fun but not very practical, would get me in trouble spinning while chasing the next guy instead of hooking up. Rode the Gas Gas 300 for a while too and remember how smooth the power was compared to the 250 2 stroke.

My neighbor has a 17 KTM 300, I’m going to get check it out this afternoon to add to the mix. Thanks again, from the sounds of it I doubt I’ll be disappointed either way.

I strongly recommend the 19 KX450. I was 260 lbs at my peak - down to about 220 now. I threw some heavier springs in the bike with stock valving and it's the best suspension I've ever ridden.

No firsthand experience with the air fork. Reading a bunch it seems the general sentiment is that it's the best air fork, but still not as good as an SSS fork. My guess is that at the C level, it probably doesn't matter much. I think you'll want to make sure you don't buy anything with PDS suspension, because a progressive spring just doesn't work as well as linkage and that's especially important for a heavier person, even as a C rider. So if you're after a 300TPI with linkage, I *think* you'll need to look at Husky, unless KTM just added linkage this year.

Thanks again Byke, I overlooked the 300 rear shock, and the Husky, is a great one to add to the mix. My dealer of choice is a KTM, Yamaha, and Kawasaki dealer, and I do like what I am hearing about the 19 KX 450 thanks Jbulz. Good news is this dealer is closed Sunday and Monday, so I have a couple days before I go back. I am sure the next time I'm in there I will be leaving with a 65 and a 450. but a few miles away is a Husky dealer, so I plan to go check out the 300 on Monday. Now older and..... well just older, i feel like the value I place on fitness and nutrition far surpasses how I viewed things in my teen years, so off track conditioning is a big part of my plan as well. would love to be back at 220 dry. I'm actually a pilot too, with 600+ hours as Pilot in command, and plan cockpits disagree with my girth, so it's time to get fit anyway!

Those 300s are amazing engines. Wouldn't discount them.

A good friend of ours is 300+ on a husky 450 and he can rip!!!!!! Get some cardio down and I don’t think you’ll feel bad about either bike, the 300 is amazing but is very very far from a 450 IMO. Get back out there and ride bud

I rode a Sprint enduro on a buddy of mine’s 300 and had an absolute blast. However, I actually liked the KTM350 as a better all around bike. Great for woods, MX and pretty much anything you want to do with it. You can be super lazy and grunt it around or you can ride it to the limiter like a 250. 450s always felt odd to me and I never had as much fun on them while the 250’s always felt too sluggish and require more maintenance than a 350 or 450.. The 350 was a great in between bike that you’ll find a lot of Vet riders choose.

X2. Currently im 270 and my 2009 kx250 pulls me around the track perfectly fine. Is it as competitive as a 160 lb rider? No but its not like it will struggle.

Honestly id look at a 350. A 450 will still slap a 300lb guy down faster than you can snap your fingers.

You didn’t say what type of riding your going to do!
Moto? Or off road?
The 450 you are talking about is a motocross bike, the 300 is a off road bike!
The the bike that’s designed for the type of riding you plan on doing

Thanks for the .02c. I rode and plan to ride MX, Hair scrambles, single track trail, woods freestyle, ect. When I had my 250cc 2 stroke I rode 250cc MX, but also all of the above. When I got my 250cc 2 stroke GAS GAS, we were waiting for the crate to arrive, so I rode several MX and Hair Scrambles on the 300cc 2 stroke GAS GAS. One thing I noticed was the 250, you could lug out of a corner, roll on, and when the power band hit, it would surprise you, and you would have to roll off and modulate depending on conditions. With the 300, it felt much more connected down low. it did as commanded. at 30 + whichever bike I go with, can be cross platform, as there is no cc limit in the 30+ class. so I want the most connected power, most comfort, handling, you get the idea. 40 - 50' tables, and step-ups, doubles, whoops, no problem. 100' triples, dangerous blind downhills, all in the past. I know from experience how critical a good suspension setup is, so regardless of how the bike comes stock, my first stop is to Enduro Engineering, to get things dialed in for me.

I really like all the input and feedback. now I'm between the KTM 350, 450, KX 450, and Husky 300. Very excited to get back in the saddle.

One more thing, I hear from a good friend that the big cc thumpers can benefit from a Rekluse Auto Clutch. I read about them online, and sounds like overall benefit of auto clutch can be realized. Any heavy riders, on any of these platforms that have a Rekluse testimonial?

I had a 2016 KTM 450 Factory Edition
Tore It down at 80 hours to do a top in and it looked great. Didn't need it but while it was down I did it anyways.
Original clutches were good at 80 hours too.

It's been ten years, he's going from a 250 smoker to a 450, why not save a ton, get the best bike for his current ability, and not deal with shitty air forks or expensive parts, I own a katoom, great bike, but not cheap, and too cutting edge for my old ass. I'll be buying a new RMZ 450 or a yz250f to go along with my smokers, most likely the zook simply because of price and it's a damn good bike. Yeah it's down 5 ponies or whatever to everything, I don't give a shit. Best buy on the planet for a vet who wants a thumper. That being said, I'm in the club that says a current 250f is as close to the perfect bike being made today as possible... Lots of power, and more manageable than a 450 or a 250 smoker, but thousands more than the RMZ, that's why I'm leaning towards the zook

Make's total sense to me , but i seems like money is no worry to a lot of people on here and its become a wealthy mans sport so i guess it makes sense

I don't consider myself wealthy, but who knows. But yes, my wife and I have enough in our savings account to pay cash, and that's what I will be doing. but the last time I had a toy was when I was 18. I have a 2019 Silverado that I just paid cash for, but that was after paying 700.00/ month into a saving account for 5 years while I drove a 2001 Silverado around. Same thing with the motorcycle, is I have diverted money over the last 3 years while I watched my son build interest into a savings account. I do things a bit different than most, yes, but I'm not wealthy, and I'm not looking to buy anything as a status symbol. I don't think this is a wealthy mans sport, but a sport of elective desire, and completely non essential for the basics of life, as such, when it comes to non essential spending I would never recommend anybody buy anything that they cannot afford.

The post did not include anything regarding budget for a reason, I want to purchase based on all the other criteria, knowing I will keep and ride this bike for a long while.

Honestly I would try to get a deal from a dealership on a yz65 and a yz250x 2 stroke or a yz250fx.

I am 29 years old @ 265lbs and ride a 2013 ktm 250sx and I love it. Fully converted it to offroad (left engine stock minus a flywheelweight).

ANYWAYS, my thoughts on why a yz250f(x) for u is:

1. Throw the 450 idea out.
Pick a 250 four stroke, 250 2 stroke or a 300 2 stroke. For the 1 or 2 perks you'll get from a 450, it's just too much for most people and you won't nearly have as much fun.

Many of my avg Joe friends who have 450s are tired faster and go slower laptimes than they would on a smaller bike. The perfect example was a demo day when 3 of my friends with yz450f's and a kawi 450 hopped on the KTM 250XC at our local track. We timed each other in the woods and the track they were beating their personal best times pretty quickly it was quite funny. The most shock to them being they were faster on the moto track with an XC model kitted with a larger gas tank and kickstand to boot haha. That being said you can always upgrade to a 450 whenever you like. I know you said you'll keep this bike for a while but it's easy to sell and buy another.

2. 4 stroke wise The yz250f (motocross) or yz250fx (offroad pkg w/ kickstand yo) has an almost 450 snap of the throttle power than any recent 250cc 4 stroke bike. (I've tried them all) while having a lot of power I do not see you needing much more for a while. Great stock suspension and reliable. The offroad pkg is great in moto. You could probably buy both Yamaha bikes for a little more than just 1 ktm450 depending on how well you shop around.

I'm picking this over a ktm250 for less maintenance and a more desirable 250 motor. But it's a very very close runner up because it does have a couple more features.

3. 2 stroke wise all choices from Yamaha to KTM/Husqy is a great idea.

An added option with ktm/husqy is the dual purpose 300cc so u can take quick road trips either to the trail or a corner store.

For reliability and consistency with great performance go Yamaha. (They still have problems too ofcourse)

450 now.. if not now, it'll definitely come later. I'm +30 and go anywhere from 215-260 lol.. 230 right now and I just bought a 17 crf 450.. if you can buy new, just buy a crf and do springs and ride it. I definitely contemplated other brands (kx, rmz), but I'm completely confident I chose the right bike. My last bike was a 16 ktm 450. Suspension sucked no matter what I did.. before that was a 15ktm250sx and while it was fun, I just didn't have anything for 170 pound dudes on 450s on big tracks. Tight tracks was ok, but definitely needed a 450..

I’m not heavy but I took a long break and came back on a 250F. I thought it would be easy to ride and a good choice after a long break. Really enjoyed it but after only 7 hours, I sold it and got a 450. Love me some 450.

I’m 31 6’4” 240 and I bought a husky 250 last year. Traded it for a 17 CRF450R. Loveeeee the Honda 450. Without a doubt get a 450. They don’t have to be fire breathing dragons, start on the mellow map anyone can ride one of these things. I also have a Rekluse and I don’t really like it. Makes the clutch pull stif and as a weekend warrior it’s just not needed. Cool to have If you really race a lot but starting out it’s not like you must drop a grand on one. I’ll likely end up taking mine off and selling it.

Imo you need to really look at the YZ450.

If you are going to ride all of those disciplines that you listed, then you might want to consider the 300xc. I know your other choice is the 450sx, but have you considered a 450xcf? That bike can moto down, hit the woods, then follow junior around while he’s on his 65.
Good luck, and welcome back.

At your size and level I would head down to Championship Powersports and pick up one of the '18 YZ450's they have on sale. From everything I have read its supposed to be a great big for bigger guys.

Couple of comments.

You don't sound that old. I race 30+ and I'm looking forward to another 20 or so years of racing.

Also, you can not be fat if you want to. No judgement, just info share. I used to be. Great thread in NonMoto right now: https://m.vitalmx.com/forums/Non-Moto,21/Keto,1354243?page=1

On the bikes: lots of good suggestions already.

If you like 2 strokes and can spring for new, then the Husky TX300 would be hard to beat for versatility. I have a TC250 that I have tried out a 300 kit on and it made for a great engine for lower RPM riding, or being more competitive with 450s on track. All jumps were easier, line selection not as critical, etc. But, it was not quite as 2stoke like as I wanted. For budget constraints, YZ250 all day everyday.

Also think a 350 or a 450 could be the right way to go depending on your riding style. More of a revver then go for the 350. More of a lugger go for the 450. The power spread on the KTM/Husky 450 is very manageable. Can also get offroad capable versions (XCF/FX).

Also as said, if buying new then I'd absolutely haggle for a package deal on the 65 and whatever you buy.

My personal opinion.. I would never buy an xc bike with intentions on motoing on it. I have always had a moto bike and it's never stopped me from off roading.
