Pretty sure a KTM 65SX is 5 grand.

And that YZ65 is built better than the YZ85. Must more race focused design, The suspension, swingarm, subframe, etc.

The YZ85 will cost more next year when the new design comes out. Going to be interesting to see a powervalved YZ85 compete finally

I was so excited for this bike and was hoping to get one for my daughter's birthday next year, but I cant justify $4599 for a 65. I'll buy a used kx for $700

It makes 100% sense. The YZ 65 is modern, the YZ 85 is from the stone age.

I don't blame you man. You can literally build a race ready KX65 for 2 grand that will have 90% of the performance of the KTM/YZ. Most kids will never require that additional 10% of bike. (Even though most mini Dad's would take a 2nd mortgage out on their house to put their kid on a bike that was 10% better than their competition, lol)

That's the way I see it. I really wanted to stick with a Yamaha for the 65, but no way now! I mean, I can probably get a deal on one, but it still wont be enough to change my mind. I figure with $1200 I can buy a used kx65 and completely go through it and that will last through the time my son is old enough. I'm not about to spend a chunk like for something that wont make a difference on my kid as far as fun and speed go

The price seems pretty fair compared to a new KX65. I don't think you would be able to make a new kx65 competitive for close to the $900 difference.

Comparing the YZ's price point to a used bike is, well, strange. You can find used KTM/Husky for 2 grand as well.

Yamaha are smart with their pricing on this bike. From the looks of things it will go toe to toe with the ktm 65 for $500 less.
Looking at the kx65, I don't think $900 would bring it up to the level of the yz or sx.
There is no point comparing new prices to second hand prices. I thought I would save some money on my son's ktm 50. Paid $1900 second hand. I noticed the kick starter wasn't returning properly the other day so I took it to my mechanic. He calls me and tells me all the gears in around the kick starter have been wearing on eachother abs one has lost a tooth because the last guy that put it together stuffed up. He looked after me on labor and I was still out $1000. Now I'm over 3 grand into this thing, not counting my time either working on it or taking it to the mechanic, with other stuff that needed replacing and a brand new 50 was 4 grand.
I think yamaha will sell a heap of these things, I'm gonna be in line this Christmas as the daughter steps up from the 50

90% is pushing it a bit. My kid is on the KX65 currently and it doesn't come close to the KTM/Husky. The engine, chassis, and suspension is far superior on the KTM. My kid can get on the KTM and within 3 laps he'd be faster than he is on the KX. The power valve makes a huge difference on these little bikes. Plus it's a lot easier to push the bike with the better suspension. There's a drastic noticeable difference between the two. The power valve allows them to get out of the corners much easier. With the KX, they have to keep it ripped wide open and eat clutches. A lot of the younger kids aren't capable of riding a clutch that hard to keep up with the KTM.
Yes the KX can be made better. Even after adding a pipe, reeds, torque spacer, changing the gearing, and nearly $1000 in suspension mods, it's still not as good as a bone stock KTM.
Team Green has given up on the bike. I think there was only 1 KX65 at Loretta's last year. The starting gate was solid orange and white. If we had another year on the 65, we would be going KTM or Yamaha. He's moving to an 85 ASAP though.

The YZ is going to be big in the racing world. For the casual weekend warriors, no it's probably not worth spending the additional money on.

Here's my questions.

1.When will the PW 50 change.

2. In what year will they change the YZ 65. 2045????

3. Why no rear linkage on the 65.

4.When will Yamaha make a 450 street legal bike. ALA -KTM 500exc.

5. Honda 65?????

The PW50 shouldn't change. It might be the most perfect bike for its intended use ever built.

The 65cc days are just to keep kids in the sport anyway, i hated motocross at first and only wanted to play soccer.
My dad took a gamble and bought me a new -04 cr85 as a last attempt to keep me riding, i guess it worked Laughing

Psssst...

The bikes that you and I spend STUPID money on DON’T have linkage.

So, don’t let that get out!

I think some people are looking at this from the wrong perspective. Compare this bike to the KTM/Husky 65 (also with no linkage) and assuming it performs comparable, it is a viable option. If you are considering a KX 65 (even modded) then the rider is probably not competitive on a National or even Regional level unless your rider is on a factory level of skill. You also can't compare it to any brand of 85/100 that hasn't seen major changes this century.

For the record: that model started out at $749 in 1973.

That's crazy. It's just interesting how much bikes cost these days compared to 15-20 years ago. I understand why and I'm not placing blame. Just interesting.

No Rear linkage to save weight and also to help with ground clearance.

Looks better built than a Ktm65 and a touch larger so will fit the older/bigger 65 kids better. Has real brakes not Mtb brakes.
Significantly cheaper hear in OZ than the Kato/husky.
I know what I'd get if it was here a year ago..Blue

Buy a used KX65 and throw some upside down forks on it. My buddy just did it for his sons 65. I think it was about $1,300 for the front end setup and the rear shock too.

Build a cheap bike, people will complain it’s not fast. Build a fast bike, people will complain it’s not cheap.

Just because you can’t afford it or your child is not fast enough to use it to its full potential, doesn’t mean there is not a market for it at that price point.

Bingo.
Yes some people can’t afford it and others just like to think there beating the system. One poster said he was very interested in getting the bike but cant justify the price so he so instead he will get a $700 bike. Now you gotta ask yourself were you really interested in the bike or were you hoping for an unrealistic miracle like a lot of people seem to be thinking.
This bike has been in development for 4 years so it ain’t going to come out dirt cheap and pricing it cheaper right off the bat better than the KTM/Husky.
Now i hope old mate gets a good bike for $700 as that’s the good thing about the sport you can get a priced bike for your requirements / talents.

I guess we the public are lucky the YZ 85 is only $4299. Next year the 2019 YZF 250 $9899.00, the 450 $9399.00.

The price difference in my Country is only about 200-250$ from the yz too the ktm65.

When the new 85 drops I think they should keep the old model and cheap out some of the parts to get the price to the mid $3k range and sell it as an entry level minibike.

Already been determined by Vital that a reasonably priced entry level
motocrosser is not reasonable nor desired.

I think a version of the TTR125 in that price range with the current 85s suspension/brakes would have broader appeal.
