I just did the crank and bearings in my 2013. Should I have loctited that bolt? I watched the Rocky Mountain video and used the washer to lock the gear and tighten the bolt.
I building a 2000 YZ 250 and used the same video. I think I may have put a little blue loctite on it as well, but now 100 percent positive. I'm now thinking about pulling that cover off and retorquing that bolt with loctite to be sure.I did the washer and torqued to spec in the manual.

Also, if the manual states to inspect the crank at 12.5 hours, is it just the rod portion? If so, the side cover doesn't need to come off. Either way, it seems excessive, but they probably use it to get them off the hook for repairs because they know no one does it.

Never seen that before. However, third gear dogs wearing out is a known issue. Yamaha, fix your dang bikes!

I've been wondering about that....heard about the issue with third...I didn't rack up enough hours on my last yz 250 (09) to have an issue.
So it's the dogs that round off or break then? Is it just a poorly designed part or poorly made? Is it third gear drive or driven?
Does it explode and send metal through the rest of the tranny causing more damage?
Just curious cause I'm on the hunt for a decent used one for a decent price...don't think I'll find one though.
People here are still asking $4 k plus for an 06 !

It's a wonder some enterprising company hasn't come up with an after market replacement for these parts...there's a lot of yz 250' s out there and Yamaha is showing no signs of ever ceasing production or ever re designing them either..
All three times I have replaced my third gear the dogs were rounded off just enough to let the machine jump into a false neutral. Upon examination I really had to look close to see they were worn. In other words - it dont take much.

Ok thanks, sounds like it's poor heat treating or something like that maybe

Thats shit. After reading the thread where KTM covered the engine that grenaded at 43 hours and then this reply I will be thinking long and hard about which bike I replace my YZ with.

Just checked the owners manual, says the crank should be inspected every 12.5 hours. That's crazy
Get a KTM, I promise they're worth the extra dough.
