2017 yz250 with 16 hours. Was told the bolt that holds the water pump gear and power valve gear backs out and causes this. Anyone else have this happen ? If so, did yamaha cover it ?

Had this happen on a brand new 125. I had the bottom end apart before ever starting it though so it was on me.

I’ve never seen something like this happen to a new, stock bike.

Yes I had that happen to our 15. But never on our 09 Yamaha cover it? Depends on who you know if they warranty it.

But watch out. When They retap the bolt in the crank. The process push the crank over a bit that it cause friction on the bearing and we killed the crank. Really weird.

My 16 did the same thing, As well as my buddies 16. I only had about 20 hours on it. Yamaha said that with the amount of hours I had, I should have replaced the crank twice. So they didn't warranty anything.

I have seen this quite a bit, the case can be welded up with no issues, but the bad part is that the bolt usually damages the thread in the crank. Can all be repaired, just take your time with the thread. I last yz we got, l took the case of and loctite and tightened the bolt before even starting the bike and no problems. Seems to be a bit on the loose side from factory, maybe not every unit, but still common enough.

Thats shit. After reading the thread where KTM covered the engine that grenaded at 43 hours and then this reply I will be thinking long and hard about which bike I replace my YZ with.

Just checked the owners manual, says the crank should be inspected every 12.5 hours. That's crazy

Loved all y YZ 250"s. 99,2000,2001, 2005 &2008. For some reason every newer one I had, the transmissions ate gears faster & faster. I got tired of replacing transmissions.....could not make it through a full season on one tranny. I have never seen the crank drive gear bolt/nut back off.....to the O/p, call Yamaha customer service & be reasonable & respectfull to whoever you speak with, it may take a few conversations, but usually you can work out something to help. I have had to contact Yamaha & Ktm customer service a few times, if the rep does not know how to handle the situation , give them a solution, ex: how about a parts credit at my dealer? How about parts & no labor ect. Something better than nothing....always worked for me....good luck...tell us how you make out....

Not a single person, unless you are a Pro. Maybe not even then, aside from a top end.

Should be able to go at least 40 or 50 hours without opening the motor for the average joe.

What? Yamaha really told you that? There is no way that i would accept that as an answer. That is a disgrace.

Did your dealer tell you that or Yamaha USA?

I think its horse shit that that nut came loose. That nut should have been loctited and torqued from the factory.

Id look at their service manual and see if that nut is a part of the crank inspection.

Also my service manual for an 05 yz250 says inspect every 5 races not replace every 10 hours. Im 90% sure pulling right side cover is not apart of it.

We have two 16 KTM 250 SX s with over 200 hours on the original cranks, he's a pro level off-road racer. At one time we thought about switching to Yamahas I dodged a bullet there.

Never seen that before. However, third gear dogs wearing out is a known issue. Yamaha, fix your dang bikes!

I just did the crank and bearings in my 2013. Should I have loctited that bolt? I watched the Rocky Mountain video and used the washer to lock the gear and tighten the bolt.

I use blue locktite on just about everything on the clutch side including the tranny bearing retainers on the inside

I had this happen on a 99 yz250. When I took it apart I found that the output shaft on the crank was too short and the outside gear ( can't remember if it was for the water pump or power valve) was barely splined onto the shaft. If the gear was say 1/4" thick, then it probably had about 1/16" actually splined onto the shaft. I was baffled to say the least, maybe it was designed that way to save weight or something. I was not the first owner so perhaps it was the wrong crank installed on the bike somehow.

So I should get a 350 and a 250sx ( I didn't like my 15) and never look back? That's what I'm thinking Smile

I've been wondering about that....heard about the issue with third...I didn't rack up enough hours on my last yz 250 (09) to have an issue.
So it's the dogs that round off or break then? Is it just a poorly designed part or poorly made? Is it third gear drive or driven?
Does it explode and send metal through the rest of the tranny causing more damage?
Just curious cause I'm on the hunt for a decent used one for a decent price...don't think I'll find one though.
People here are still asking $4 k plus for an 06 !

It's a wonder some enterprising company hasn't come up with an after market replacement for these parts...there's a lot of yz 250' s out there and Yamaha is showing no signs of ever ceasing production or ever re designing them either..
