Just took my new KTM 250sxf to the track today for its first ride. I followed a break in procedure of letting the bike idle for about 30 min then cool all the way down till I could touch the cases before starting the same prosecure once more. I then did two 50% laps on the tracks and came back in once again, to let the bike cool back down. Now my reason for this post is that I am experiencing extreme bogging and just a lack of throttle response. Nothing I have experienced on the newer FI bikes. I am an experienced intermediate class rider (if that helps?) and can kinda tell when something just might not be right. After the initial two laps I went out for another couple laps at about 75% and came back in. Bike is still bogging on me and somewhat studdering when the throttle is quickly hit. Any idea if the break in procedure has caused this or if anyone else has experienced this?
Edit: idle time was the time it took me to gear up, not 30 min sorry for the confusion

Bone stock. Had the highest pump gas at the time of the ride ( has since been drained) and now filled with my regular fuel of VP.

That^^^

My bike would likely over heat, if left idling for 30 minutes.

Hopefully someone has some idea's for you.

If you disconnect the fuel line quick release, there's a tiny grey cone filter. Maybe replace that, I've had bogging issues from that being slightly clogged. Maybe the tank had some debris from the factory?

I suspected that. Comes with a few replacements new and was recommended to be changed after first ride, I will be doing that when I change all the stock fluids before my next ride. Just really frustrating being the first ride. Next step may be taking it straight back to the dealer

Don't stress, it's gotta be something simple like that. Maybe try some nice fuel like 93 or VP T4. It's not nessicary but maybe you just got some bad pump fuel...

When i first replaced mine, there was noticable grit. Also noticable grit on sump magnet on first oil change.

Check the choke handle screw isn't stuck in or has issues

Take it back to your KTM dealer. If they don't know what it is before even starting to look at it, find another who does. It's a simple fix.

And forget all that bullshit run in procedure you went with. Start it up and let it idle for a 3 minutes so the computer can acclimatize to your local. And just go out and do an easy moto without revving the freckle off the thing or lugging it in too high of a gear. Let it cool and do another if your still worried but you'll be good to go. Every bike that is build hits the dyno at the factory to make sure it hits the right numbers so don't be scarred to rev it. I've seen bikes get ridden like they stole em from the get go and never have a problem. I'm not saying that's good or I do it like that, but bikes these days are so well built, you don't have to baby them.

Idled for 30 minutes though? Twice? Surely 20 minutes in you'd think "This ain't right"

You fried the engine if you let it sit there and idle for a half hour. Why would you let it just sit there for 30 min and idle. No air is flowing across the radiator which means it's going to overheat. If you weren't riding it, I'm afraid you ruined your new engine,

I've heard a lot of break in theories. Where did you get the idea of that procedure?
12/6/2015 3:42am
It's a ktm. Enough said.

Why would you idle for so long? A four stroke will get smoking hot when you do that.

It's bogging because you filled the motor up with water when you blew the head gasket.

Also, running fresh motors half-assed like that is an excellent way to glaze the rings.

Good lord, where did you get that break in? No way that was in the KTM manual.

I was honestly going to come in and make a joke about letting it idle, but... damn.

Sounds like you cooked it.. where did you dig that procedure up from??

Warm it up , ride it for 10 minutes without revving it hard, or lugging in the gears, come in and nut and bolt check it, and you are done.

If you are brave , you warm it up and just give it some straight from the off, to get a better ring seal .

Im hoping its the choke thing, just for your wallet's sake.

Haha it's like my dad always told me with new bikes, "if I don't hold together now, it won't hold together later"

I idled my new 450 while I was getting my gear on and it was blowing steam.

New bikes shouldn't be that volitale. I'm sure you didn't cook it or it wouldn't have restarted so well the second time.

30 minutes at idle on a bike with no radiator fans? Ugh oh. You might want to go back to who ever gave you that break in idea and kick them in the nuts.

I'm a little skeptical it caused the issue, but idling that hard is really hard on an engine, especially on break in. Your cams may have not been getting enough oil without enough RPMs to circulate the oil to the top end fast enough

You just need some Cone Valves and everything will be fine!
