Anything I should be concerned with? Any known problems?

Probably going down to visit KJ at BobbyJ's Thursday to pick up this 2014. It started again innocently enough. One day I was having a conversation with Hammertime on IG, then I peeked at this board again, set the DVR to record SX.....................then my old riding partner came by the house talking about doing the Elsinore GP.

Last time I was on a bike was 6 years ago. But it's been 13 since I rode with any regularity. I'm 47 now, should I really be doing this?

I hope to ride/race again this summer mutt,it is what kept me sane ,i need it.

Sure you are the same. I'd go for it and not think twice.

One thing I'm going to get is the best helmet out there which seems to be the 6d i believe.

Damn helmets are so far behind the equipment.

Do it. I really like the '14 and onwards YZ450f. Really strong well built motor, awesome suspension. People say about them being wide around the airbox (where the tank would normally be) but I never noticed it after 2 laps! Our tracks over here (UK) are generally a bit tighter and slower than in the US & I would imagine you'd want to run closer to 110mm sag over there. 100mm mark here with forks at first mark in clamps worked well most of the time here.

Only issue I know of and killed a few of these, is the standard filter & cage is not great and if it's wide open and full speed, top gear, can suck the corners of the filter around the cage and then let dirt straight through. This happened at Le Touquet beach race to a few but that is down a 10km straight wide open!

I absolutely love my 14. Put an fmf pipe on it and thank me later. The 14's are fire breathers! You won't regret getting one.

You cant go wrong with it. The motors are bullet proof, keep the oil changed and the filters clean and you can go a while without any major maintenance. Some guys are seeing several hundred hours before they have to touch the head or bottom end. I ride motocross regularly with a group of guys that are 45-57 years old. Have fun!

Love my 14! Have the 15 motor mounts and Dubach engine relocation collars. Huge difference in handling. Full FMF pipe and an aggressive tune. Chuckie what benefits do you feel with the 15 CDI?

Would you mind describing the difference you felt with the relocation kit?

Thanks.

I felt the bike stock was hella fast, but it would have a really hard hit at the weirdest/random times and upset the chassis- usually mid corner. Which made it hard to ride, and unpredictable to me. I remapped it with the MXA map, which helped, but not perfect. Then I put the '15 CDI on it(really the only engine change for '15), and changed the whole character of it. Now its still fast, but easier to ride too.

I've also put 20mm clamps, '15 motor mounts, '15 fork tubes, PC link, and a Bill's Pipe on it. All seemed better, but not earth shattering.

The Cycra shrouds are a good mod too.

What's your take on the DR.D relocation kit? Been contemplating that mod, but haven't pulled the trigger.

Can I piggy back on this and ask if anybody has had any hard starting issues with the newer yz450f's, when hot. Never noticed it with my 15, but my 16 has made me find a downhill to bump start it once as well as just push it back to the truck another time. Was wondering if there was a mapping solution, or something.

Oh yeah. I'm a KTM guy who is semi converted to big blue.

if you kick too fast or hard they dont start well. easy slower kick works best.

Check your valve adjustment. If your valve lash is too tight, it can make the bike hard to start when hot.

Chuck and Sherrif, IMO the engine relocation kit, at $80, is the best chassis mod you can make on the YZ450. I had my 2011 so dialed in with suspension and the engine relocation kit that when I got on the 2014 I really struggled with it, even after having the suspension done up. It was very frustrating because by most reports the new bike was a much better chassis stock. Once I made the mod on the 14 it was like magic for me. I had been dealing with that vague front end feeling entering corners and had no confidence the front was gonna stick, but the mod is a massive improvement in that regard. I have talked a few friends in to making the mod and they are glad they did as well. Do it! Then report your thoughts. And yeah, I've got the cycra shrouds too which are nice.

As far as that hard engine hit, are you talking about that herky jerky abrupt response right off idle when you are trying to finesse the throttle through a corner? That is annoying, but I guess I've gotten used to it. May give that 15 CDI a shot, as you are not the first I've heard recommending that.

The '15 model was suppossed to be a decent step forward in handling. The only changes between the two years were stiffer fork springs, different outer fork tube profile, updated fuel/ignition maps(CDI), and motor mounts that went from aluminum to steel. I bought my bike when the 15s came out, and it was cheaper to buy a '14 and the new parts than a '15. I tried each part one at a time and the CDI was the biggest improvement IMO. I believe the steel mounts were interned to soften the chassis up a bit.

Yes, the ECU. Showing my age a bit calling it a CDI. (Capacitor discharge ignition)

Valves in spec. Close to the tight limit but still well in spec. I'm getting the gytr tuner; a. just to have it and screw around and b. maybe do more research and find a setting that will help with the issue. My 15 never had an issue hot starting and this has me a little pissed off. DNF'd Saturday because the prick wouldn't fire after I crashed and stalled.

Does anyone have any feedback on how the 14-16 YZ450F's perform/handle in the sand?

The motor is a monster so that always helps in the sand. I don't love the way the stock suspension is feeling in the big sand whoops. Could be the fact that I am a lot older then I used to be, though. The compression braking is kinda effing with me in the sand too, thinking of the rekluse 3.0. and/or a heavier flywheel weight.

Yes to answer your original question there is a major issue with the 2014 that should be addressed on every bike. The shift stop lever is a ball bearing type and has fallen apart in many people's bikes. I read that it was not an issue for the 450 so when I bought a new 14' 250 and a new 14' 450 I changed it out in the 250 and not in the 450. Here is what I found at 30 hours when I went to change my oil. Thankfully I had a magnetic plug, which I highly recommend, and it pulled the pieces into the bottom of the motor and kept them from bouncing around and destroying my engine.

My brother had a 14 and I didn't care for it. He just got a 16 with a FMF slip on, TLR porting, and a remap with the GYTR tuner and....... mine will be here Friday.

get Cycra shroud plastics - they narrow the front and let you get farther up on the bike. Definitely a big improvement for my 15.
