Found an all stock 2007 CR250 on c-list. Going to check it out tonight. Any issues with the '07 that I should be concerned about? Much thanks

There are a few things to iron out, but the bike's a beast. Good turning

2005-2007 are identical and a great platform; Could be the best handling bike you ever ride with proper setup. Last year of production so they can hold a bit more value. Lots of information and advice can be found on Vital and TT. See CamP's posts for tips and tricks Cool

I'd recommend against milling the base 030" as it will kill the topend power.

Some swear by this as I’m sure you’re aware. Haven’t pulled the trigger on doing mine as yet. What would you recommend instead?

BTW, I’d say buy it for sure. Problem I’d have is not wanting to use it if it’s brand new Laughing

Rode an 06 model a few yrs. back with .025" off the base of the cyl. & it felt like a neutered CR imho. It shifted the powerband to low-mid with a flat feel to the topend. If you ride woods type trails & not much mx it could be a mod you like. For mostly mx use I don't think it's a good mod..
There are quite a few posts on TT from members who also claimed loosing topend power with that mod & most of them went back to an oem cyl..

What type of riding do you do ?

I have an -06 with a full throttle jockey kit (not seatcover at the time).
Best bike ever in terms of looks and handling

Only moto for me. I’ll have to give the base decking a bit more investigation. I appreciate your input.

What gearing are you running? I’m currently 13/49 and think I’ll try 13/50 to see if that helps it pull 3rd better through some corners.

In stock form with the 13/50 gear combo it will tighten the 2-3 gear gap. It should help with coming out of a turn in 3rd gear with it also lowering the gear ratio as well. I've ran that gear combo on my 03 model with mods as I like the grunt the engine produces in the lowend throttle response. With the engine mods it will actually pull the stock 13/48 gear combo with ease.

I bought mine with a base cut jug on it already, hated it for mx. Was a pooch. About sold it, but I tried double base gasket and felt improvement, bought a new oem jug and it was feeling much better by then, had some top end come to life now. Now I'm ready for some port work

Yup. I've tried to steer many from doing that mod on TT that ride primarily mx..

Have a 06. V force reeds, pic pipe and shorty silencer, shaved cylinder base .030 had the crank balanced and if you do anything put a PWK air striker carb on it. This fixes the finicky jetting issues and prety much makes it run crispy in any condition. Mine knocks and pings if I don't run go though. If you do these mods it will be a screamer. Trust me.

Terry Varner use to shave .030" off the base & now only does .010" unless more is requested by the owner. It's common physics by lowering the ports the port timing will be altered. It really depends on what the riders looking for in regards to mods.
If you were to take a few laps on a bike with different cyl / head mods it would reveal to you what a difference it will make especially in the mid-top that most riders use for mx.

Back in 2004 I had talked to terry about doing mods on my 03 CR2 after reading this article, but ended up going in a different direction. He had mentioned that he shaved the cyl., but I was looking for more mid-top to run with the thumpers back then. After talking to a few reputable tuners I decided to go with PC & feel I made the right choice looking back on it.

Are the mods being done for the 03 much different than what people are doing for the 05-07? I realise there were quite a few engine changes for 04 and again in 05.

Pro Circuit has a good porting setup for the case reed CR250's at a reasonable price. They do not machine anything off the cylinder base, but do quite a bit of work on the exhaust port and tunnel, some on the transfers and some on the boost port, and a lot of work on the head. They recommend using C12 and Maxima 927 32:1 on that engine, but a few guys say you can actually run pump gas without detonation on their race fuel setup.
I've ridden an 05-07 PC CR250 and it is worlds better than stock.
The bikes are extremely reliable and durable (especially 05-07 with solid crank), and the Gen3 Honda chassis is very, very good- great turning combined with decent high speed stability. Add a few front brake upgrades (big rotor, newer CRF master cylinder) and fork/shock springs for your weight and you'll have an excellent platform.

Yep. PC did the R&D on the case reed engine & have excellent porting specs with head modifications. I haven't raced the 03 in a few yrs., but it would pull 450's on the starts & straights. I ran the recommended VP C12 & also tried 100 octane 76 pump gas with no issues a couple of yrs. ago.
I wasn't able to buy any VP C12 for a bit due to my local resource not getting it. I talked to the PC main engine guy running the dept. & he told me that 100 octane could be used, but would be the minimum recommended.
With the 100 octane the engine feels like a detuned version of the C12 still a potent combo though.

The PC race fuel engine I rode had 13/48 gearing. It pulled that combo without any problem. With 48 on the rear, things start happening quickly in 5th gear.
