2001 Kawasaki KX 125/250 works edition?

Does anyone know anything about Kawasaki making “works” bikes in 2001? I vaguely remember something about it from that time period, mainly the fact that only AMA licensed riders (privateers) could purchase one?

I remember mitch making "works" transmissions that they ran in their race bikes to sell to anyone that wanted it. But i also remember it not lasting long as it was expensive.
