Anyone else a bit disappointed in this format for Daytona? It was 20 laps last year, why not this year?

Gotta maintain a TV schedule. Timed races make that easier to do.

Why would this race be any different to the 16 other ones...?

I think historically Daytona has been a 1+ minute laptime. When they raced 20+1 we would end up with longer races around 25 minutes for 450 main. That was part of the deal where Daytona was a one off race and more of an indoor/outdoor hybrid with main event closer to an outdoor Moto length. Rougher sandy track and fitness really played a part. I haven’t looked but if they are going to 20 minute mains this year, maybe they are only getting about a minute per lap. I think when they renovated the nascar track/put area it restricted the area that they had to build the track on hence why it’s so narrow the last few years.

Ricky's track preview had a time of about 1:10 so actual lap times will be close to a minute

20 minutes plus a lap on that track is plenty of punishment.

Same argument was brought up last year and it worked out being pretty much the same IIRC.

Even if this is the one round where they do 1 less lap, the 20 minutes at all the other rounds with 50 second lap times benefit from the time formatband make up for it.

As long as they leave the track alone all day/night and do zero prep it will be like Daytona of old. Sadly zero chance of that happening.

Because it has always been independently promoted. ...and traditionally has always been 20 laps. That's fairly common knowledge.

Feld (..and Clear Channel before) does not promote this race. The race has always been promoted by ICS and the main sponsor has always been Honda...until last year.

This changes the makeup of the race quit q bit. Is the track also shorter than it used to be? I think they changed that a few years back to accommodate tv also.

The track is wildly different from year to year. Tomac's time of 1.09 is right in the middle. Sometimes Daytona is only a 1.03 and sometimes it's as long as 1.18 (off the top of my head). The infield that it is on is always the limitation, which, to my knowledge hasn't changed much in the last 20 years.

Yea for sure!! That track will be shredded. Some boys will be winded by 10 minute mark.
